A big thank you to every one who came it was a good day by my standard so I hope you enjoyed it to. I have put together some photos of the day, see below.
AND NOW THE NEWCASTLE EVENT CACHE AWARDS
And the winner of ‘The Sneakiest Cacher Award’ is Pesky GeoMonkey
Not once, not twice, but three times this aptly named cacher located, retrieved, read and replace a waypoint while standing within 2 meters of another cacher with out any one ever seeing him do it (except the camera see photos)
And the winner of ‘The Most Dedicated Cacher Award’ is SteelRat
How he convinced his wife to come with him with only 4 days till her baby was due I will never know, but his attendance (and hers) was appreciated, now that’s dedication.
And “The Grand High I Got The Cache First Award†goes to:
Geo-Nads (and daughter) for finding both Enigma and Ephemera first between them.
And finally “The Close But No Banana Award†goes to The Bronze for being right behind the leaders all day no mater who took the lead and for being so close to Geo-Nads when he found the cache it was just unlucky that you did not find it.
The following prizes are now available
Pesky – your prize is that the next time you are in Dubbo we will take you out to dinner, just give us some notice.
SteelRat – your prize is an invitation to bring the family out to Dubbo for some caches and we will take you all to lunch, likewise just give us some notice.
Geo-Nads – your prize is a cache container, but not just any container (just wait till you see it.)
Bronze - your prize is a banana.

Bummer.. spent ages looking for this in Newcastle.. Then realised i was in Newcastle, Tyne & Wear, UK.. No wonder I thought it was bit chilly fer B B Q!!!!
PS.. HAPPY NEW YEAR to those Down Under
PS.. HAPPY NEW YEAR to those Down Under
What a pity the location for the dinner was not included in the cache notes as we would have loved to meet up with you all. Hope you all had a great day.
(I've never participated in a cache event before, so I'm guessing that if successful, it gets logged as a find. Let me know if it is otherwise.)
Gotta say that this was a lot of fun. Getting to meet other cachers, then charging off all over the place for a series of waypoints and puzzles to get to the 2 final cache sites, a hell of a fun way to spend the day.
Must say that the time element put a different spin on things for me. Usually I'll spend a few hours researching probable locations and travel routes before heading out. Couldn't be done today of course, despite a try at printing out a grided map setup for Newcastle the night before. It really only helped on the first cache hunt.
The 2nd series had me driving in loops around Warrabrook, trying to convert WGS84 to AGD66 UTMs, all on the fly. I think with these sort of challenges a mapping GPS with a loaded directory would be veeeery handy. Failing that of course, having the cachers who got there first giving you some extra hints to speed things up also helps.
Pesky was certainly the speediest of the day, must be all the Sydney experience he has gained. And while everyone else beat me to the locations, at least I still got there in the end (OK, with some help).
I've got some time off at present, and have been inspired to try and think up a cache event around Maitland way in the next couple of months. Anyone who might be interested in something of that nature, probably in March, let me know.[?]
Anyway, all in all, a great day out.[^]
Thanks Mix76 and crew.
Some memorable events of the day:
-Pesky pretending to pull a clue from a cannon barrel 30m from the actual clue location (Pesky by name, pesky by nature ).
-Misinterpreting a clue by ignoring a decimal point, and wondering why the next waypoint was 4km out at sea (at least I was NOT alone in this error ).
-Rummaging around in bushes, under rocks, and other unsavoury locations looking for micros while haughty FTF cachers lurked nearby smirking (this got to happen to me a lot).
-Punching in point oh eight eight instead of point oh oh eight, then wondering why everyone else stopped still and my GPS still said 150m to go.
-Hoping not to attract attention from a homeowner while searching for a benchmark at 'ground zero' that was 10m off (yeah well, I've made bigger mistakes myself).

Well after a lot of driving around strange streets, secretive manoeuvres and just meeting new cachers we found the required caches to log this event
We also had reinforced why they call him Pesky and it was good to meet SteelRat and family
We have the travel bug in our greedy little mits and hopefully will place in a cache next week end
Thanx Mr and Mrs Mix 76 for all the organisation that went into it.

New Years Day we headed off from Rockhampton at 10am and drove through Newcastle (8am) with a three hour sleep near Ballina from 2 to 5am. Arriving in Newcastle on the second gave us the rest we would need for this event the next day.
What a wonderful event it was. Mix did a lot of organisation and allowed ample opportunity for teams to catch up over a lunch and later a dinner. The days two caches had hard and easy elements scattered with the sights and history of Newcastle.
For me I enjoyed the challenge of the offsets with maths not being my strong point. The ever-arching cul-de-sacs made each GZ difficult to pinpoint. For me though I really enjoyed catching up with Pesky and The SteelRat team. Working with Nads was a lot of fun too. Had a few laughs and gained a few more campfire stories to tell.
If your a cacher who hasn't been to an Event cache yet I recommend it. They are social and great fun. Even better when you get to meet people again you haven't seen for a while.
Cheers Mixima for a wonderful event, Well planned, well paced and my only regret was not maiking it for the dinner. Sounded wonderful.
The Bronze.

Hmm, odd, my first log for this cache has gone missing?
Guys? are you playing tricks on me?
Wel yes it wouldnt be an event cache without a little hijinks from the Pesky one.
I couldnt let all those out of towners get complacent about the easy caching on the coast. Subterfuge, misdrection, and a little hint swapping made it all the more fun.
Thanks Mix & co for organising it, I look forward to the next one. Maybe we could host it in my local area!
hope you a ll made it home safely,
P.s.
Bronze, Swampy says, fix up the co-ords for "catwalk" and he'll aprove it.!
Sorry i had to leave before saying goodbye to the steelrats, but at the speed they were caching, I t may have been dark before they found the shipping container sized cache! LOL!
see you all online ,or on the trails soon.

Hi 2Dogs, this is MrsMix78. I don't know whether you are online still or not (5pm here) or whether you have spoken to Mix before you posted this post, but dinner is at Finn McCools at 6.30pm. Finn McCools is at the Northern Star Hotel? on Beaumont Street in Hamilton. If you could make it, we look forward to meeting you. Cheers MrsMix78
Weird... don't know why it posted it as Jan 2 when you did a post today (Jan 3). Probably on the silly states time, lol.. Just confirming that dinner is tonight the third [-)]
'Dropping' Stegosaurus Travel Bug into Newcastle Event Cache so he will be on his way to a new cache on the 3rd of January.
Doing what rat? By the second mate its all ole hat! You only need to cart a third of the crap you needed to for the first.
Bronze +1. If I can find a friend, I'll bring one. I'll try my best to be there also as indicated on the Forum. We have the second at the Gold Coast and will do a despirate dash back up to Newcastle after. If tiredness kicks in then there is a good chance we will be late.

This sounds like a bit of fun.
I'll definately try to be there, but with a 2nd BabyRat due only a few days later, I may find myself otherwise occupied...
