Sadly we think this cache needs to be archived. Today we made our first visit out Sumner way since the last large set of earth tremors. it was not a pleasant drive and we returned home feeling rather uncomfortable. There is no way that we can get to this cache and from the hill road it looks as if it will be a long time before the tack is passable and even then the cache is probably well buried. So we have decided that the best thing to do at this stage is to archive the cache.

05-Jun-11
Couldn't access this one due to rockfall so played on the playground anyway Smile

01-Jan-11
First find for 2011. I think I made it harder than it needed to be until I started thinking like a geocacher. Took clip left Aled de Malmanche. TFTC

04-Dec-10
Trust your GPS! After another hour of fruitless search we were about to give up. OK, Rodney just confirmed that it is still there, but we could not find a trace at all. Finally we spotted the traces he left during the maintainence.
So after looking in the wrong spot for over an hour it was a quick and easy find.
We used the time while the Festival of Cycling blocked the track to do some other caches in the area. Christmas is coming, so it is good to have this themed cache done in time.

27-Nov-10
Yes the cache is there - it has not gone missing. If you visit this weekend Rodney's 6.30am elephant tracks are highly visible!! It is safe to leave the bridge - the rockfall has not damaged the cache area. Remember it is at a crevice at the bottom of the rocks (that have always been there) - it is now hidden from your view when you are on the bridge because of all the long grass that has sprung up but it is still in its original spot!!

26-Nov-10
Spent about 30 minutes and found some likely places, but no cache. Either it is pushed to far into the hiding hole or it can be found under all the fallen debris.

14-Nov-10
We looked everywhere we thought the cache would be - even a bit further away from the track but no luck. There has been rockfall at the GZ due to the earthquakes. Will go back and look again if the owner confirms it's still there

13-Nov-10
Rockfall has smashed part of the bridge but still usable - might give this another go when someone else finds it

29-Aug-10
That took a long time. Muggles walked and ran by a lot while I was looking high on rock. It is hard to get to and slippery when wet but it is head height from bridge.

24-Jul-10
Made a quick visit this afternoon and found the general area to be muddier, more slippery and generally harder to manage than it has ever been. The cache itself is safe and dry and in place.

15-May-10
This was our first geocache search. We're pretty sure we found the right place, with a very cool split in the rock, with sharp plants above, and followed the instructions to go from the bridge side. Didn't find anything, but had fun anyway.

26-Mar-10
Think we found right spot but not the cache

24-Jan-10
Took a few minutes to work out where to start looking without having my legs getting a good scratching. Managed to get the cache without losing any blood. TFTC TNLN

02-Jan-10
Finally got up here this morning to see what was causing so much difficulty. Things have changed considerably since our last visit. We took some 'tools' in case some clearing was needed so were able to remove some of the branches that were in the way. If you approach from the uphill end of the bridge then there is a reasonable way in - around - under - but you shouldn't get too scratched in the process! We will put the difficulty rating up somewhat as it is certainly more difficult than the way it started out. We took the 'large' decoration - it can hang on our tree next year. We also removed the inner bowl that was cracked so wasn't managing to add any protection!

30-Dec-09
Dad got a bit scratched but eventually he found it. We swapped a small xmas decoration and left the large decoration near the cache site. Recommend you take some gloves.

21-Dec-09
Not an easy find. Of all the trees to fall over the cache site an acacia is a nasty one and there was blood spilt in the hunt and retrieval. That last 5m is a real doozy. Left a big decoration that would not fit in the container so I hope some one goes soon to get it and hang it on their tree.

14-Sep-09
Second time back here and after a bit of a hike we came to the bridge.and after a scramble around we had it TN. Left a Lady Bird,She will enjoy the view.

11-Sep-09
This seemed pretty close to the area I was caching in so decided to give it a go, esp with a terrain rating of 2. The route I took definitely wasn't a 2, and the scamble at GZ was more like a 4! Easy find with the hint.
Thanks for the work-out!

08-Aug-09
Nice walk - hadn't been on this track before although live close by. Quite overgrown hiding place.

02-Aug-09
After the recent find I gave this one another go. I came down from Captain Thomas this time a longer but less steep walk I think and within 5 minutes had the cache in hand. This time I took the hint picture with me although it is not much help as a tree has fallen over GZ partly obscuring the site..

25-Jul-09
Very muddy up there today but at least it was muggle free. Cache not where I thought the obvious place for it was but resorted to the clue and found in the end. Cache a bit damp but probably only cos it hasn't been found in a while and never gets the sun at this time of year-still able to write in logbook. Nice to have given it an airing after so long in hiding. TFTC

18-Jul-09
After the walk up I was reluctant to walk away empty handed but finally gave up after searching for about 20 minutes. Did find likely place complete with concealing rocks but no cache.

25-Oct-08
TFTC and in anticipation of it's anniversary, Maligayang Pasko.

18-Oct-08
Checked this morning - all safe and everything in good order.

21-Sep-08
Found on a caching mission with WoolfieNZ and a couple of newbs. Bit of a slippery mission to get it. Very nice track, will have to come back to this one again. Smile

21-Sep-08
Found with One-Fang on a really nice spring day. It was a bit slippery but a good hide and really nice to look at the log book and see how long this one has lasted.

#277 Found with trampgeek (5/7 on a sweep between Evans Pass and Godley head). Thrashed around for a while with no luck. Resorted to the clue, and found it reasonably quickly after that.

31-May-08
Quite a climb on a slippery, dewy day. Lovely spot and after a good think and look found it! TFTC

18-May-08
Found with kwaka40. We'll have to come back here for a MTB ride one day!

Found the cache about where it should be. . The contents were quite damp, maybe from last nights light rain.if anyone lived handy enough to air it out for an hour hr so...
TNLN, TFTH, cheers.

21-Oct-07
A very pleasant start to a day's caching and picnicing.
Swapped decorations. TFTC.

10-Oct-07
Attempted this cache about a year ago with no luck, in fact last time it was putting us a further 15m up the track. We took what seemed like a goat track from the park below the cache today. GPS was spot on and B made the scramble to retrieve it.

Nice walk on a good day. Left the Starbugs TB which seemed to have a bit of a Christmas theme. Thanks.

29-Sep-07
First cache of the day; will rock on up the hill for the next little challenge. And isn't it fun to sit on the slope looking, of course, unsuspicious while walkers go past. TFTC.

20-Sep-07
My first find. Not a muggle anymore. Shall shift the Geotag GTWJ2A north. Thanks for the cache.

11-Sep-07
Thankyou Sallies for rehiding the cache and stocking it with lovely christmasy swops. Cache very easy to find this time but the climb up the hill doesn't get any easier. Swopped geocoins left NZ to Sweden which was picked up in Ashburton.

With the jingling of the bells,
and the carols we could hear.
The helpful little elves,
squealed 'look it's over here!'

A good stroll on a cool afternoon. My companion found it quickly and we were on our way. TFTC. Hatas

25-Aug-07
Well with a handful of Jeep Travel Bugs to put out we decided to go back up now that we had some idea of where the cache had got to after hearing from Eight Paces. yes, it was there - above head height. Now how a cache can shift that far is beyond us. It is now back at ankle height where it started off. The foliage is slightly different now but it should still be easier to find. To tempt you up here - for the first or second time - we have put a Blue Jeep and the belted kingfisher geocoin into the cache. The Blue Jeep is in a race so get racing! At the same time we took the United for Diabetes TB and moved it on.

24-Aug-07
We were up this way today so went to check the cache. Bearing in mind what hello Mrs had said we went equipped with a new cache and on finding the spot empty we duly left our container behind. However somehow we had managed to miss the log by eight paces and we now wonder if it was there all the time. We will have to go back soon and have a better look but in the meantime you can be assured that the cache is there - and maybe if you are lucky there are even 2 caches - but only one log allowed!!
Thanks
Iris & Rodney

I found the cache in a place that did not match any of the clues. I spent 2 days (3 visits), probably 3-4 hours looking, and eventually found it: Human persuaverance I guess. It was in an un-expected place and did not match the photo clue i took with me).

Please message me and I will inform you of where i re-hid it. I gather that somewhere along the line the cache hiding place has shifted.....

I SO loved this cache due to to the wonderful view and energetic walk.

18-Jul-07
Took 2 tries to find this. Visiting Van Asch School for the deaf, for a week so decided to visit a local cache. Dropped off a travel bug. Good walk up the hill. Bit muddy!

Made a very slippery uphill approach through a muddy paddock to the cache and found the spot fitting the description of the location easily enough. There was lots of flattened grass tracking around all the rocks within 10m. We added a few more looking for that all ellusive red container resorting to the hint as well. A couple of mountainbikers snuck up while we were pondering where to look next. The conversation rapidly changed tack to fern specimens. Thoroughly cold and muddy we reluctantly gave up and returned to the car slipping and sliding all the way. Have since looked at the spoiler photo and sure are we were in the right place so where can it be?

14-May-07
Third visit, but got it this time. It does not seem to be exactly in the place in the spoiler photo, but is close.
Thanks,

S.T.

29-Apr-07
Had tried once before but this time used the clue and just when thought no luck found it nicely hidden.....good little spot and the horses were still standing guard on the other side of the fence

09-Apr-07
Took what is probably the nearest entry point and it wasn't too much of a walk to the cache. Seems to be a very popular track.
No trades, TFTC.

09-Apr-07
Not too hard to find. It was just a matter of eliminating the other likely crevices.
TFTC!

25-Mar-07
Did not find this the first time arround, but had no problems this time after reading the clue.

17-Feb-07
A popular place this track, we had lots of runners and mountain bikers racing past which made a search difficult. Used the clue in the end and even then took a bit of luck not to get busted. Amazing how sound travels around the place, we could hear water being sprayed onto a wall from across the valley. TNLN Thanks.

11-Feb-07
Wow ! This one was quite hard too find, heaps of rock crevices within a few meters of co-ordinates, and heaps of long grass and blackberry ( ouch !) concealing other crevices ! Heaps of muggles on bikes zooming past as well. Eventually found it with help from the clue. TNLN
Thanks !

I drove to the closest road end and thinking to follow the arrow but quickly opted to sidle around a little when confronted with the reality. There were muggles near but luckily but moving rapidly away so a fairly easy find resulted.

Joyeux noel.
This was a great walk for the pre-school KiwiHarvs. Cache found with fair ease. It was soaking wet, including the logbooks. Tipped water out of all the bags and dried things as best we could. Swapped Xmas trinkets. Thanks.

14-Jun-06
Second visit successful, with new GPS more accurate than the old. It was well hidden and I still had to search for a while. TNLN Being midwinter, this track loses the sun by 2pm, and was very muddy.

28-May-06
nice find on the bikes - but extremely wet and muddy thanks

16-Apr-06
Walked down from the Summit Rd, couldn't find it, but there had been people up there cutting branches back. Maybe they moved it, will go back again. Baines family

11-Mar-06
Made our way down from Captain Thomas, picked a few blackberries.. A quick find, been on our list for a while now.
TNLN, thanks.

19-Feb-06
Went up the hillside. Amethyst got angry at the chosen path Smile Apparently it was a boy route.

Thanks Ryrager & Amethyst

Well it's about time I done this cache has been on my list for a long time have driven past heaps of times, great view took us about 15min's to find..

Many Thanks Bitsprayer

17-Dec-05
Renewed the cache today - stocked it up with new Christmas goodies so it will be true to its name over the Christmas season.

10-Dec-05
Checked this out as part of an early morning bike ride. Did nine of our caches in two hours. Not many muggles around at this time on a Saturday morning!! Everything was wet but tipped out the water and will come back later with a new container of goodies.

10-Dec-05
Well it was pretty well hidden, but we like them like that... The trouble was that the cache is wet. I was still able to write in the log book and almost removed the cache to dry out... I was in a hurry though so left as is. No swaps as cache contents are not swapable. Sallies Attention!

20-Nov-05
Had a very good look around this spot, but found nothing. Bit of a shame, too, as I had a some themed items to add to it.

07-Oct-05
Cannot find this in the likely spots. The nearby hawthorns have just been cut and poisoned, and I wonder if the workers found it.

29-Aug-05
great way to start a sunny spring day - thanks - cache all intact + orc - rubber ball

04-Jun-05
veay wet under foot,easy find

07-Apr-05
Thanks again Sallies, for another nice wee cache on a pleasant walking curcuit. We went up from Wakefield Ave to the top and down the newer track on the east side of the road.
The cache was a bit obvious, so I managed to cover it just a little more. No swaps.

28-Mar-05
A quick up and down while enjoying the easter sunshine. So there's a vague Xmas link..

13-Mar-05
Took nothing,my co-ordinates were a bit out but found it.Was out leading a tramp on the Captain Thomas,it was a great day.

05-Mar-05
Slogged straight up the hill through the horse paddocks, so we didn't have to backtrack. Lovely walk. Easy find. Decided to keep going to Captain Thomas. TNLN.

16-Feb-05
OK, so they say hindsight is always 20/20. Well, perhaps in retrospect we shouldn't have taken the direct route from the carpark... Track? What track?!!

Found with the aid of the clue. Cache contents are a little on the damp side, but not too bad.

TNLN

Cheers.

16-Feb-05
We took the short (long) way to get to this. The 'ole, lets drive 'till we're as close as possible, then make a direct line for it technique! Daylight was fading, but with torch in hand, we weren't going to let that stop us!
Thanks Sallies Smile

03-Feb-05
nice new container...
last on our walk around godley from sumner and back down this track.
nil trade

30-Jan-05
Replaced the container this afternoon. It is a red, plastic, Christmas Pudding container.

27-Jan-05
Took a walk tonight along with our grandson Ricky and granddaughter Jessica, and a friend from Palmerston North.
It proved a challenge. The Ton slipped and rolled down the hill, coming to an abrupt stop right where the cache was, just as Ricky was shouting "Here it is!" He narrowly missed getting squashed by a rolling grandfather.
No swaps.
Just to let you know, the cache box has a split in it so may not be waterproof.

Managed to park pretty close to the cache, coming in through the donkey field. Ended up taking a slightly circular route to get up to the cache. Needed the hint to find it. No exchange made. Being a geodasher I was happy going straight back down the hill and back past the donkeys. Cheers Gav [271]

23-Oct-04
Checked cache and took out some of the larger items, replacing them with smaller ones so that the lid fits on easily!!

12-Oct-04
Returned to Captain Thomas walkway to pick up this cache. Abeautiful day with a fantastic view of Sumner.
Found the cache easy too. Cache is very full and the lid is bursting off.
No exchange

Interesting climate change - walked up in shorts, & warm winds, and froze on the way back, as the southerly had hit.
Lucky that there is a proliferation of good coffee shops not far away! -Avon samples, +dolphin.

Had a few moments avaiable so gave this one another go.
Found it after a short search.
The spoiler and clue (read after my last attempt) made it easier.
+ Avon Samples (not from the river).
- Nothing.

The TB "I'd rather be flying" was with me for the visit.

28-Mar-04
Rodney ran up the track to check the cache and yes it is safe and sound just where it should be!!

27-Mar-04
Walked up through the Pony Club.
Looked around a lot of different crevases but with no luck.
I assume that the cache is still there, as I didn't have the spoiler pic with me.
Think I searched a spot that looked like the one in the photo, but can't be sure.

25-Mar-04
Oh, so the first cache HAD gone walkabout. I was here a couple a weeks ago and that crevice was definitely empty. Walked up with the photo spoiler this time and immediately spotted the rock that wasn't there before. No exchange. Thank you Sallies.
