That's five DNF in a row so unfortunately I have to conclude that it is no more. I'm not in a position to replace it so I will close it down and free up the site for someone else. Thanks to all who have visited and supported this cache over the years.

Not here?

10-Dec-23
We climbed to the top and had a lovely view but could not find the cache.

24-Nov-23
What a great new staircase and lookout. I found this cache some years ago. A look for it today with friends confirmed it is not there. Well possibly. Lots of garden work. I believe nearly $1M for this. $750k from SA gov $200 from local council. Wow. Pic. Thanks alex and clear skies from TeamAstro. No luck today.. we really came for the trig

18-Aug-23
Docked at Penneshaw close to 7 a.m.
Collected car and wife and headed off to Kingscote.
Julie noticed this hill climb so we took to it.
Reached the top, both knees ankles are in pain.
Now going down.

17-Aug-23
Wet cold and a long way up but arms aren't long enough. New knee wont let me scale fence. Tftc

Had a good look no luck

15-Jul-23
Apparently I found this one about 20 years ago. I couldn't find it today though but I went for the view anyway.

05-May-23
Climbed all 400+ steps on a rainy morning. Good thing I had the place to myself. While I could see the cache, I couldn’t reach it. Had to hop over and clamber back. Not a pretty picture for at 69 with a bum leg. But, my name is in the log. Wasn’t going all that way for nothing. Thanks

04-May-23
A long arm avoids jumping fence. Big enough to see from stairs.

19-Apr-23
WOW! That was a climb but what an awesome reward! I could see the hide under foot but this 69 y/o grandma just couldn't jump the fence. And I wouldn't want to tromp around on the sensitive sand. I'll send a photo to the CO as proof of my find if you'd like

16-Apr-23
The hiding spot wasn't obvious, so it required jumping over the guard rail. Soon in hand.

TFTC

16-Apr-23
Perhaps the cache owner could write in the cache description, that with long arms, the cache can be grabbed without jumping onto the sand.

This may minimise the number of people hunting through the bushes and sand around GZ.

04-Apr-23
Added note: 121 years ago to the date, Matthew Flinders climbed this hill!

30-Nov-22
Great old cache. Took a bit of searching though

14-Nov-22
We made the climb hoping the rain would hold off, by our count exactly 400 steps up! Once at the top, waited out one other tourist, before making the quick jump and grab. All is good with this cache, and the views were spectacular. Plus... the rain held. Yay! TFTC from Tennessee, USA

10-Nov-22
Made the climb but no luck. Spectacular views of the area.

04-Nov-22

28-Oct-22
Great location It took me a while to find the cache. I had to do the forbidden thing and jump over the guard rail.

07-Oct-22
Sick cache!

08-Sep-22
Fantastic views after an exhausting climb for an amazing geocache with little trinkets for the kids. Thanks for the hide. Favourite of ours.

07-Sep-22
Found it!! Couldn't retrieve without jumping the fence (not willing to do that tbh) and I tried to pull it, but my arm wasn't long enough... Aaaargh... Anyway TFTC, super nice views from the top!!!

27-Mar-22
Our gps was out by about 6m so after a little search we soon found. Great view!

10-Mar-22
Hi - we decided not to try. Seems from comments that you need to leave the fenced area, and Geo Hubby and I think this isn’t ok - 1. Too many muggles and 2. Delicate ecosystem. So nah - not for us.

05-Feb-22
Great view, worth the climb, found after a while. TFTC

20-Jan-22
We stayed in American River while on holidays.
It was warm but we found time to visit some of the caches in the area.
This was a great view from the top.

Getting late in the day but enough time for just one more especially when its an Alex cache. Great location and a good workout. Caching with Wollaston and SeasonedBird. Fav point alloc

10-Nov-21
Great view and particularly appreciated and impressed that an AED was installed 3/4 of the way up. Very appropriate given the climb we thought. A fav point for the view. On the hunting trail again with SeasonedBird, Liz & Bruce. Another great day for caching. TFTC alex

Day 2 of our KI getaway and now we’ll into our second week of holibobs. What a contrast to Flinders!
We drove from Penneshaw to American River via the western cape, enjoying lunch at False Cape winery, beach walks, stair climbing and glorious weather.
Great climb up here, glad not to need the defibrillator! Met some locals up top who told us about the new golf course plan to blight the view. TFTC Alex great to find a golden oldie!

28-Sep-21
Almost didn’t want to venture over but wasn’t too hard. Thanks & great view

14-Sep-21
Day 6 of our 6 night break on the Island. Our targets for the last full day were the Western area. What a challenge that was. Finally reaching the top the hide was not seen from the boardwalk so our only option was to scale the barrier. Fortunately there was no one around so care was taken not to cause any damage. There was no way we could retrieve the hide from above. Placed back as found. Thank you for the placement of the Matthew's Prospect cache alex find number 8485 on 14 September 2021 at 11:43 am

Nearly miss it, didn't have a lot of time. Worth the travel. I'm not sure we should be moving off the platform to retrieve caches. We need to be cautious. T FTC

10-Jul-21
After a week on the island, it was time to see it from the top. We arrived with others so extraction was tricky. Then an eagle graced us with a stunning airship. Some considerable time later, we dropped the token and investigated the contents.
Thanks for a well placed cache.

Mr and Mrs Parrot took a trip overseas to Kangaroo island for the week.
We had a lovely time finding caches and interacting with the people selling produce and food to the public.
It fabulous to see the green starting to come back into the fire ravaged areas. We had hired a house in Kingscote and ventured out each day in a different direction to see the sights and what the island had t off.
We also picked up 60 odd caches along the way.
My thanks for the quick responses to the Geocaches and the virtual cache which we sorted out before logging.
It was good to be able to complete Wonders of the world and become an Ultimate Explorer during my stay.

I had gone out a few days earlier to find this one but with footprints at the listed GZ and no sign of a cache I figured it had been moved already.
Since by now I had been able to confirm that and knowing there is a de-fib machine halfway up the stairs if I needed kick starting again there seemed no excuse not to back up there.
Pity it was poring with rain.
Nothing like a challenge to start the day.

Thanks to Weredunn4 for relocating this to a more suitable location, if you feel the coordinates need fine tweaking please let me know. Happy caching!

31-May-21
Coordinates changed from:
S 35° 50.625 E 137° 44.695

Coordinates changed to:
S 35° 50.585 E 137° 44.710

Distance from original: 254.5 feet or 77.6 meters.

Cache relocated to a more suitable location.

30-May-21
Saw the note from the CO and as we were in the area, felt it would be good to assist in keeping this older cache alive, by relocating it to underneath the boardwalk.
Hiked up to the top of Prospect Hill, and then helped some tourists take a photo of their group and then patiently wait until they all left. Then retrieved the cache which was about 80m away, and relocated it. Tucked it away, then jumped back onto the boardwalk with only 30 seconds to spare before the next group of tourists arrived at the top Smile
The new coords have been sent to the CO to amend this caches coords.
Have always enjoyed the views from this location - the wild coast to the south, and the lagoon system to the north. Fav point for this one!

26-May-21
I am requesting the next finder of this cache to remove it from its current location and if possible re-hide it in a more suitable spot on the top of the hill - under the boardwalk perhaps? Please send me the new coordinates so I can update the details on the cache listing. If there is no suitable hiding spot then please remove the cache and advise me and I will reluctantly close it down.

“Protect precious plants by only walking on paths." This was the message for this area. The cache is well now outside the area defined by a new set of steps and viewing platform. We decided to respect the ancient dunes and ecology in line with this request. It should be repositioned or archived.

Logged using the Cachly app for iPhone.

16-May-21
Suggest this one be dealt with to respect the area. See some earlier logs. It should be possible to have a compliant cache at this spot.

23-Mar-21
After scrambling up 407 steps, we found a defib about 70-odd steps from the top (why there wasn't one further down, I have no idea!). When we reached the top we found ourselves on an enclosed platform. The surrounding signage made it clear that the area OFF the platform is for the native animals and is part of the preservation of K.I. Due to this, we did not leave the platform for fear of damaging the local environment and disturbing the local wildlife. We would advise the cache owner to re-consider the placement of the cache if the final location is within the surrounding landscape.

12-Mar-21
How great to get this oooolllddd cache! The stairs make this an easy climb up. It would have been a slog on the sand. Luckily we had the place to ourselves so it was no issue hopping the fence. Tftc and thanks for keeping it alive.

Found It!
Slowly I plodded my way up to the top. Quite a view once you get there! No one else up here today so I was able to quickly find the cache after admiring the views.

I wasn’t completely sure about Matthew’s prospects let alone mine if I attempted these stairs, so have left this one until near the end of my visit. Today I braved the stairs. Oh oh. Still more adventures to be had. I got to the cache ok but almost didn’t make it back to the stairs. This is what happens when you are short. I eventually made it back onto the platform with 30 seconds to spare before I was caught. TFTC

Day 2 on the trip to KI and geocaching . Today was mainly around and between Kingscote and American River and a few other. This is a generic log and thank you to the CO for the placement of the cache. Thoroughly enjoyed the time locating them. TFTC

This cache is now about 75 m from the newer (Sep 2019) stairs. We did not attempt to get off the gated area.

After some deliberation I decided to jump the fence. After all many others had walked that path in the past.. it was an easy find. Cache in good condition. #1700 for us! Tftc

Nomads travelling in their caravan around Australia. We have been on the road since July 2011 and discovered caching in August 2013. We travel with a bunch of travel bugs belonging to our sons and grand children. Where ever possible, we will maintain your cache as we travel.

We are here visiting, house and farm sitting for three months. There are only 86 caches on the island. This was our 18th, only 68 to go!

Still camped at American River, and today, Pennington Bay and surrounds was our target.

We climbed the steps here, what a task for a person with two bad knees, but I was determined to reach the top. When I honed in on GZ with my compass, I realized it was still some 80 metres away from the newly build lookout.

Reluctant to a) climb over the barrier and b) walk on the pristine sand dunes, we decided that we were not going to attempt this cache.

Cache Owner need to look at the logistics of this cache now that the new steps and lookout is open. To confirm our thoughts we saw a sign down on the dunes stating, "Protect precious plants by only walking on paths." This should form part of a geocacher's creed.

Personally I feel that this cache should be archived, but I leave the decision to the cache owner.

Thanks for taking me to this magnificent lookout Alex.

Very Happy
