Hallo, auf einem Road-Trip über die Südinsel Neuseelands auch diesen Cache gut gefunden.
Very nice Place.

Awesome spot! Worth putting a cache here. TFTC Jolden

Cool spot at the top of the pass. Tftc

A few fords, but otherwise the road was good today. I was surprised by the number of cars we encountered. Amazing views from gz - I did not expect to see as far as Aoraki, and a very clear view also! TFTC!!

The sign here has certainly seen better days! Lovely views up here. I wasn't sure what condition the road over the Hakataramea Pass would be like, and tried to find out from a number locals - none of whom seem to have been over here (asked at the information centre, petrol station, hotel etc etc)! I decided I'd give it a go and turn back if it was too rough. The road was in excellent condition and I could have driven a sedan over at this time of year. I followed the helpful hint and soon found the cache. Hope those prickly branches don't grow too much. These caches helped me find my way over the pass. TFTC.

26-Apr-21
Of course this is the one you have to get - the pass itself. A really interesting route to follow. Nice to find an older cache. Had planned lunch about now, but with this incredibly strong wind it's hardly possible to cache let alone picnic!

Crawled to the cache in extreme winds thanks for the view. Haka road trip with KiwiLedgend

#19265. This was our first trip along this interesting route out of the Makenzie basin. Enjoyed the views from the saddle, and made a quick find at GZ. TFTC.

06-Feb-21
Found with StreetWalkerNZ on our Waitangi weekend to Kurow and environs. Today we are travelling from Christchurch to Kurow via the Hakataramea Pass Rd, a road that is new to both of us.
As we drove towards this cache, we flushed out a wallaby and it hopped along beside the fence for a short distance. For a moment, I thought we were in Australia Razz. The cache was further from the road than anticipated but it was a quick find was we got to GZ. Good to find an older cache today. TFTC.

14-Jan-21
Great drive on way to Burke’s Pass. There’s a glass eye in the cache pot! Cache is damp but can still write with pen. TFTC

10-Mar-20
In the 21 years I've been in the South Island (21) the Hakataramea Valley Road is one road that I had never travelled. Today I decided to see what the road was all about. Starting out from Kurow it was my intention to go as far as the boundary gate between the valley and the MacKenzie Basin, visiting as many of the geocaches in the valley as I could. Razz

This was my last cache as I travelled to the head of the valley. The forecast passing weather front arrived just as I was signed the log. The remains of the original container barely exist, and it's replacement is now suffering a little with some water inside. Tipped out as much water as I could but then I had to beat a hastie retreat in the rain back to the cachemobile. TFTC.

An enjoyable weekend enjoying the scenic McKenzie area, and finding some great caches along the way. Great view through to Mt Cook today. TFTC

Geez it was windy up here today, could hardly stand up. No views the Divide was raining hard. TFTC

Almost couldn’t see cache mobile in the mist. Heard a ute coming, then it arrived. Cache in good condition despite loss of lunchbox lid. mrandmrs out caching to Tekapo and back over Easter weekend - Tftc

20-Feb-19
For my personal challenge of working towards getting my calendar on GC.COM to be at least the same shade of green or darker I need to sign off at least 11 caches today. I won't grumble if I find one or two moreWinkRazz. Today I decided to the the Hakataramea Pass and pick up the required caches.

A nice view back to the MacKensie Basin.

Cheers for the cache.

06-Feb-19
When we left Dog Kennel Corner there were patches of blue sky, however when we arrived here we were up in the clouds, it was drizzling and only 4 degrees! We weren't going to let this stop us, so one of us went off into the gloom to find the cache. No chance of seeing Mt Cook today.
+ a large marble, - nothing.

20-Jan-19
I had the opportunity for a trip up the Hakataremea today, something not to turn down especially if I might have the chance of grabbing this cache that has been around for quite a while. The hint and coordinates were spot on. Nice to get a cache away from the immediate roadside.

03-Jan-19
GPS took me straight to the spot. What a marvellous road this is, so much fun to drive, and with awesome views

24-Nov-18
Found with our 2 and 5 y.o. T4TC. Weather not the best today. Unfortunately views are not great. Cache is good condition. Love the "Camo" someone covered the cache with!!! We came from McKenzie end, and hoping the fords on the Waitaki are not bad. Fav point from us for location.

06-Nov-18
Came here this afternoon on a drive from Kurow to Lake Tekapo via the Hakataramea Pass. Found the cache in about the third place checked. It was a perfect fine and calm day and the views from here out over the McKenzie Basin and towards the Southern Alps were just magnificent! Signed log, thanks for the cache and it’s worth a favourite point.

Found on a days geocaching with Ally and Aussie Pete. Seemed to me that there could have been closer hiding sites than this one in the area due to the lack of traffic that uses this road

14-Jan-18
Found it. It is better to take the road just past Snowy Cache than what is shown on the map to get onto the Pass Rd (sign post also there).
As Doully said cache location over thought.

What an adventure! Very Happy
On our way to pick up my little meerkat TB (after nearly 2 years of his sucessful travels from germany to new zealand) we had some problems with our navigationsystem.... so finally we came from the south and drove the whole hakataramea valley, which was definitly harder for our smal car than the way down after the cache back north to tekapo.
But in the end we had a lucky reunion...my little meerkat and me!
I would like to thank Katrin for her patience on this long search!
We took the little meerkat with us Smile He will come with me back to Germany in January and the he need a new order.....

What an epic cache! Coming back from Oamaru to ChCh, we made the detour through Fairlie and to this one. Was well worth it, such amazing views and mountain serenity! The road was very good, the only concerns were the four fords to cross. First three were very shallow, the last one looked a bit big but we made it in our 2WD family wagon. Actually, I didn't check with GPS before crossing it - so close to the cache actually, we could have just walked from it instead.

Didn't quite see Aoraki from the top of the pass but the mountain vista was still very impressive.

Cache all good, we decided that it is the time to finally put down the Meerkat TB we had been carrying around for a couple of months. Hopefully the TB owner will enjoy the journey of fetching it as much or more than we did to come here Smile

P.S. Looking back at previous log pictures over the years it is interesting to observe the 'transformation' of the road sign on the top of the pass. Posting a 2017 October picture as well.

The (major road trip was about to begin) that was for the Oamaru Geofest trip in the company of HKCB and iammrwalker for a bit of a road trip across to the west coast, through Haast and in a roundabout way to Oamaru.

My trip stats were as follows: 617 caches (214 Puzzles), 3300kms, 500 litres of Petrol, 21 hours sleep, 100+hours caching time. THe weather was wonderful and apart from about a 6hour period on the sunday we had fine weather all the way and feel that we made a bit of a hole in the region.

Firstly thanks to all the CO's that put in the effort to to set up these caches and to all the CO's whose caches we did not find this trip, well we are already planning our next trip.
We worked hard at getting specific caches (especially the Geo Art around christchurch and hence our concentration on this area for the preliminary 24 hours. So after a couple of running repairs to the rental vehicle (fuses not working) we were off knowing that all ports could be charged and that sleep was for the weak.

Sorry about the copy and paste logs but that is what tends to happen with a number run of this size. Heading up throught he MacKenzie Basin to cross to Kurow on the way to Dansey's Pass before heading back and up to Oamaru

Came down this way from the North for the Oamaru Geofest, and decided to add a few more days to the weekend trip and turn it into a bit of a Mega mission, starting 5pm on Wednesday 18th and finishing 3pm Monday 23rd! Teaming up with Cats&Dragons for the first 24 hours then with Iammrwalker joining the team for the remainder.
Just a few of the stats for the trip were:
- 700 caches found, including 270+ puzzles (thanks to the Christchurch Geoart)
- 3300 km's driven, using over 500L of fuel $$$
- Just over 20 hours of sleep (about 4 per day on average), and about 100 hours of caching time.
Certainly a Mega Trip!

Day 4: With the lack of sleep starting to take a toll we finished Day 3 off early and got a few hours sleep before getting back to finding about 2am this morning. Todays mission was to find caches around Tekapo before heading South through the Mackenzine Country via Hakataramea Pass, and onto Dansey's pass before coming out on the coast and heading to Oamaru for the Geofest and caching around the area.

What cool place, loved what the locals have been using as target pratice!!

Sorry about the cut and past logs, but that seems to happen with cache runs of this size!

21-Oct-17
I found this Geocache on a Geocaching mega mission along with Cats&Dragons and HKCB. With only just over three and half thousand Geocache finds I was very much the over achiever in training. We were in the South Island to support the Oamaru Geofest event, hunt down some Jasmar and D/T harder to find Geocaches, lonely caches (those not found in more than 6 months), virtuals and try and meet some milestone numbers. We signed the logs HIC, an abbreviation of our respective Geocaching names, (H)KCB, (I)ammrwalker and (C)ats&dragons. A huge thanks to all the CO’s who placed and maintain the Geocaches we found.

I arrived in Christchurch late Thursday evening having left straight from work and was picked up by my intrepid companions in our four wheel drive rental to find they had already grabbed about 270 finds in the previous twenty four hours. I wonder if the rental company would have still let us have it had they known we would travel 3300km in it before returning it four days later? Our trip took us to Greymouth via Arthurs pass, Ngahere, down the west coast to Haast across to Hawea, Cromwell, Twizel, Aoraki Mt Cook, Tekapo, onto the east coast up to Oamaru and back up to Christchurch via Akaroa and countless diversions and small towns along the way. We slept in the car for the first two nights, grabbing some shut eye between cache finds, taking turns to drive. We rented a small place in Oamaru for the other two nights and appreciated a bed to sleep in and a hot shower. It was an amazing trip, in which I discovered the South Island has some of the most incredible scenery in the world.

One of the first and easiest of the backcountry passes I did on this trip, completed the whole thing in 2wd, heading away from the view but a great place to stop and admire behind. TFTC

Taking the motorhome over this pass so hoping the fords are not to bad. So far some good. Tftc

Nice drive from Kurow to the Hakataramea Pass. We enjoyed the view on mountains around and farmlands. Thanks to geocaching we discovered lovely hidden places there. To many boxes to remember exactly so thank you for all of them. Most of them were easy to find.

The last one, no snow at the pass, we could see a nice sunset on Alps.

Fefe.adrien and I signed on the logbook with our team name : Lekiprokos.

Tftc Smile

Ninalila and I visited the Hakataramea Valley and did some boxes along the road. We discovered nice places and really good views.
All were easy to find except one DNF.

Thank you for the cache and the discovery

Day 2 of a 3-week summer road trip around the South Island with our kids: along scenic route 72 via the Mackenzie onto Haka pass, heading for Dansey's & Naseby. Clear blue skies, spectacular views all the way today. Breath-taking. Much as though I'd also love to stop at every cache along the way, the carefully negotiated plan is a few quality finds each day or risk divorce from my muggle husband & mutiny from the kids. This was an obvious choice: yet more photos & a nice quick find, TFTC

Came at the valley for the Mackenzie side. Great drive through. Seen Mt Cook.

07-Jan-13
Found on our wee Christmas Holiday trip. very wet cache.

01-Jan-13
No view here today and it started raining when we neared the top of the pass. And did it rain, M got soaked getting to the cache. There is a ford just 1 km north of here that stopped us last year but we thought we would have a go this time as it would shorten our trip home by about an hour and a half. Got through, didn't look as rugged as it did this time last year. So completes our adventure for New Years Day 2013 of two passes, 32 caches, two wallabies and 407.8 km round trip.

As I coninued my drive on the long way to Dunedin - great views; I'm not sure why they need a gate here!!!

30-Dec-11
What a great spot. We will be back, great views and the road was not as bad as we thought. Thank you placing this cache - and good to find one of the older caches.

27-Dec-11
Woohoo! No planning around it but this worked out to be my 10,000th find and I could not think of a more suitable spot to mark the occasion. A brilliant sunny hot day allowing a magical view of the peaks with Aoraki sharply defined and looking magnificent. Memories also of riding my bike across the pass and down to Kurow exactly 5 years ago and experiencing the same magnificent view, and thrill of making the trip across the pass.

An awesome spot for a cache, many thanks for the placement.

14-Oct-11
No view tonight on a cold dark night! Cheers Gav [9837]

22-Nov-10
15.10: On the way from Methven to Oamaru. After MacKenzie Pass, the first five kilometres of "real"Surprised offroading (taking a short cut between Haldon Rd and Hakataramea Pass Rd, which was mentioned as "road" on several maps and the GPS, but in reality it didn't look like a track - well, from a central european point of viewWink - niceTwisted ford at the end) and a picnic we reached the Hakataramea Pass. We discovered the cache only after we drove the boundary gate, what gave us the chance for another break in the high country. This location deserves a cache! Once more: wonderful views to the mountains. Content was wet, we cleaned and dried as good as possible.

Weather: fine, 11°C;
Wheelchair: possible in general, unless there would not be that terrible muddy trench[xx(]Smile;
IN & OUT: nothing.

Our finest recommendations for this one!
Thank you for bringing us here!

great trip even though we started to go cross country All maps a little out of date. An easy drive as little water in the fords A shame the weather wasn't that great Quite an easy find and Kipper just loved galloping over the hill after a day in the car.

On my way to fishing the top of the Haka today, the weather is different up here a very cold wind blowing. The cache was an easy find, could do with a little drying

10-Mar-08
Easy find. Very cold, so we did not linger. The first time we drove over this Pass was on our honeymoon, in our Mini. We got stuck in a ford and had to be towed out.

09-Mar-08
Came and went from the MacKenzie side. Great views across to Mt Cook, but nothing on the Waimate side. The pass was the boundary for the weather today.

Sorry for the delay in logging this but it was interesting trying to locate the cache in 13cm of snow. It was a sunny day and therefore a good view of Aoraki. We had a young visitor from Germany with us and he made an entry in the log too.

First to find this cache and it is our 300th find!
We were pleasantly surprised at how good the road in was - there are a few fords to navigate but the road is in good condition even though it doesn't quite line up with the position given on our old AA map or the maps on our GPS! The beginning of the road in towards the Haldon Arm is being prepared for tarsealing - in fact quite a stretch has already been done so that makes the journey through the general area much more pleasant.
Thanks Jolden for this cache and the others that you have left for us to find today, making this another memorable day of geocaching finds.
