Well I have to thank everyone who attended for allowing such a great show of support for Geocaching in Queensland. The game might not have ran out as smoothly as planned but I am sure everyone had fun and got to meet some of the other people behind the caches you have all been finding in and around Brisbane and the greater Queensland area.
I look forward to meeting you all again at the next Queensland Geocaching event.

At the risk of dragging this out, I'd just like to clarify my earlier post...
I disagree totally with logging ones own cache or cheating in any form, but I certainly won't lose any sleep if someone does. As Four Bears pointed out, they are only cheating themselves.
But...
I see event caches as completely different to your traditional cache.
The challenge in Geocaching is to find the cache. An event cache is about as hard to find as a pimple on your bum!... The only challenge is being able to attend. This is why I was surprised at some of you being irked at jFreak logging a find. After he and Lt. Sniper put in the hard yards to organise the event I would think that attendees would be only too happy to let them log a find.
Having said that, I don't think anyone should be allowed to log an Event Cache as a find. They are a temporary "cache" and deny the majority of cachers a chance to ever find them. If you're in competitive mode, and for whatever reason you can't attend, you may be rightfully p*d off!
Well, I guess that's my 4 cents worth now!
Kevin

We attended this event but didnt know we were supposed to log it as such, sorry for the delay
I dropped in to this cache to review the logs, and I came across the discussion about logging your own cache. So, I thought I'd put my 2c in too.
I agree with Manta and The Four Bears: I feel strongly about people logging their own cache. I have seen it a couple of times in Victoria, and many times in WA. Sometimes I have even sent them an email, pointing out their inadvertant mistake, but I have noted that the logs don't change. It's a bit rich, then, when these people accept the kudos for reaching 100, 200, 300, and so on. As far as I'm concerned, their '100' is really only 97! I don't see Event Caches as any different. You get 'credit' for hiding a cache, and you get 'credit' for finding others' caches. Your real stats are the total of hides and finds. You can hardly 'find' your own cache.
I agree with Crew 153: As stated above, you get credit for hiding a cache. However, in the case of an event that is organised in partnership, only one person gets credit for it. In this case it was Lt. Sniper. In my opinion, Jfreak is entitled to claim some credit for the cache. As he cannot claim hiding rights, he should at least be entitled to claim a find.

I don't think it is a case of -
"It has been done in the past - so it's ok to do it now"
In this case IF jfreak had not logged it as a find he would have no record of attending the event as he could not log it as an organiser.
The previous organisers were possibly in error in logging theirs as a find where they were also credited as the organiser but that is now history.

Well hasn't this opened up a can of worms! Some interesting points made - here is my 2 cents.
I also don't look upon geocaching as a competitive sport, however that's not to say there isn't a touch of healthy competition within it. For instance, who can say they don't get a bit of thrill being first to find, the feeling that goes with getting there before anyone else and the good-natured ribbing that goes with it? This is a good thing - if this element was lacking from the game it would certainly take some of the pleasure out of it for me.
I don't feel cheated by the fact that someone else logs a dubious find - they are only cheating themselves. However I think it devalues the game when people, who should know better, do log them. I was rightly chuffed when I passed the 100 mark - for me it was a real milestone and several people emailed me their congratulations. I have sent similar emails to others when they have passed their own milestones. Your total is also a good indication of your level of experience. If someone with, say, 100 finds logs a no find on one of my caches I can be pretty sure it’s gone.
Now time for me to eat some humble pie. Going through the logs it would seem that logging your own event cache as a find has been done by others before. Mea Culpa. I apologise for having a go at jFreak for something that seems to be accepted practice and hasn’t been questioned in the past – sorry Steve. Maybe I was guilty of taking things a bit too seriously in this case.
That's not to say I approve of behaviour such as logging caches you didn't actually find, getting people in other countries to log finds on your behalf, ignoring rules on reverse caches etc. However, I'm not the arbiter of what's good & bad in this game and others can make up their own minds about what is acceptable and what is not. If those who indulge in such practices can live with their own conscience then I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
Finally, ask yourself if you would be happy if every time someone logs a dodgy find, instead of their total going up, yours went down. If you are honest in your answer then maybe it DOES matter to you just a little bit.

From What I see Lt Sniper gets the kudos for the organisation ( go to the profiles for jfreak and Lt Sniper). As jfreak does not get recognition for the organisation he should then be entitled to log it as a find. If he had got the recognition for the event I agree he should not log it as a find.
Logging your own cache as a find?
Unethical. No question about it.
If it was a mistake, fair enough. If it wasn't, I feel it cheats other players and should be removed.
Four Bears and I have taken a stand. We're happy to fly the flag ourselves but would value any other opinions. (Come on, don't be shy!)

If its an event I don't reckon theres anything wrong with the organiser logging it. Everyone else gets a 'find' for it. The organisers deserve at least that.

Logging your own cache as a find?
I'm hoping that Four Bears and Manta are a bit "tongue-in-cheek" with this one.
An event cache is way different to your ordinary cache and unless he didn't attend, then I can see no reason why he shouldn't log it.
Personally, I don't consider geocaching as a competitive sport so I don't care how many caches a person has logged and I wouldn't feel 'cheated'if someone logged a false find. Let's face it, if you wanted to cheat you could just go to every cache page and record it as a find... "TNLN forgot to sign log..."
Anyway, if you're wandering who the hell I am, I live in Townsville and I've been hoping that one day my visits to Brisbane will coincide with one of your picnics, hence you have been on my watchlist, but I missed this picnic...

I agree with Crew 153 as well as Manta & The Four Bears,
Unfortunately as a joint run event jFreak and myself cant both be credited for running the event. In this case I think that its fair that jFreak is able to claim Spring Picnic 2004 as a find.
I do however feel that claiming your own cache be it an event or normal cache is "cheap" and should be frowned upon. The only cache type that the owner should be able to log a find for is a CITO event.

Interesting points Snipe. A little contradictory but interesting!
I guess this is always going to come down to the individual and players will interpret the 'rules' or guidelines their own way.
In response to Kokoda - gidday! - I merely put my opinion up to gauge the feelings of others, and I think that's certainly occurred! I personally feel strongly about this but am open to all viewpoints as I trust this missive reflects. I enjoy the game immensely and value the friendships I have made within it and the ones I am yet to forge. I love the rivalry between players and am thankful that we can maintain that with a sense of humour as well as adventure. Life's pretty boring otherwise!
As far as this particular incident is concerned, those that are 'in the know' will form their own opinions and may or may not make them public. That's their choice.
I've made my bed and am prepared to lie in it so, if anyone ever catches me trying to claim a find on my own cache then please give me a good solid slap, show me a copy of this note and send me back to the institution!

Hey jFreak, how come you logged this one as a find?
Surely you can't log your own caches can you? If so, does that mean I can place 200 caches and log them for myself, then immediately archive them.
Maybe then I could have a total like yours.

Unfortunately we couldn't get here. We'd stayed with friends overnight at Raby Bay, and toured the area with them instead. We didn't even get a chance to find a cache.
At least we've met some QLD cachers' through their caches these last two weeks. Thanks to all.

Quite a colection of new & old faces. Nice, simple to understand event, though we ended up getting someone elses puzzle piece due to colours being simmilar. Kim thought the chalenge was great. We bought home the puzzle for show and tell and visited the Koala centre afterwards. Great job Alex & Steve. Thanks
A Great day. thanks to Lt Sniper and JFreak for organising an event where we could put faces to all the names. Although our team took out the wooden spoon award we had a great search adventure and we look forward to meeting everyone at the next event.
I was unable to attend this one. Unfortunately, being over 16,000 km away makes it hard to attend just for the day. Enjoyed looking at the photos, and really missing the Brisbane weather.

What a lovely day, sun was shining and it wasn't too hot yet. Great to meet you all!! Good job Lt. Sniper and jfreak.
Thanks for a great day ! Thanks to Alex (Lt Sniper) for the organisation of the picnic and also to Jfreak who together with Alex constructed the challenge for the day. We had fun and it was great to see all the new faces. See you all at the Summer Picnic! Andrew and Maryan.
Only a subset of Dohertys were able to be there today. Fortunately we were able to team up with Dak for the challenge, though I didn't expect to have to tie the knot with someone I just met!
Good to see old faces and meet some new ones. Thanks for the event Lt Sniper & Jfreak and thanks to Dak for the teamwork.
Cheers from Judy, Rohan & Molly

New faces, old faces, REALLY old faces...
We came, we had some laughs and we participated in the 'activity'. Congrats AandM for winning it. Most of us fell victim to the inaccurate waypoints and tossed it in but you guys came up with the result.

Just a reminder...could all those who dropped off or collected a travel bug from today's event please make sure they log it appropriately.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Mrs Deco had a great day. It was really good to meet other geocachers and get to put some faces to the names on the computer. And even though the other half couldn't make it, and team Dive Dive Dive brought up the rear, it was lots of fun and everyone had a wonderful day.
Thanks for the enjoyable day. Even though we had to leave early, it sure was nice to meet & great you all.

Oh dear [8)] - Just surfing the geocache website and discovered that this was on today - I fully intended to attend this - I must be getting old, I thought it was next week.
I'm sorry I missed it
I did go for a walk however and plant another cache...

Thanks to all for making us newcomers feel welcome. apologies for having to take off early, but sometimes duty calls.
Looking forward to being able to spend more time at the next event.
One good thing about leaving early, we get the pleasure of coming back to this area to find the cache that was hidden on the day!

I've only had the opportunity to attend one event cache before this, and I enjoyed it for the same reason as I enjoyed this one: putting names to faces. I now know how to identify stevegriffin if I'm ever called in to a Police Lineup for creators of devilishly clever puzzle caches. I've now met three members of dohertys, who gave me so much pleasure with their "Looking" series. I can now say I've met the person who was prevented from finding a cache by a stray dog (Manta). I can also say that I missed out on meeting Rogainer, who prompted me to meander around Milton, and whose "Photo Finish" cache entertained me on Tuesday. The list goes on and on. Although I was unaware of it, I was also in the presence of the cacher with name that is the hardest to type: ¢ha®lie ÃÂelta
Some people might find it a daunting prospect to join a group of complete strangers for a day's entertainment, especially when you don't even come from the same State. But everyone was so friendly and welcoming (as cachers are wont to be) that it was not a problem. Thanks for that.
This event was especially significant for me because it was my 600th cache 'find'. I got up a little earlier than normal this morning so that I could log two caches on my way to here so that this would be the case.
Thanks to Lt Sniper and jfreak for organising and running the event, and congratulations to aandm for winning it.
I have five Travel Bugs in my current inventory, so I'm logging them into and out of this cache so that they get the credit for travelling to Queensland.

Sorry about this late notice. If you have a fold-up table and chair set then bring them along. The tables provided are a little cramped
Also if you have any Travel Bugs you would like to trade with other cachers then please feel free to bring them along.

Dohertys will be there but it will be a reduced number. Tom has had to whip off to the US on short notice and some of the kids have "prior engagements". Judy though is on hand to fly the flag. Min of 1 Doherty - max 4 attending. See you there.
Last minute changes had dictated that we can't make it this weekend. Was looking foward to meeting you all...

Shenzi and I will be there. Just remember, we haven't got a clue how to play poker !!
I'll be in Brisbane on business, and I have that weekend off. If you Banana Benders can stand having a Mexican join you, I'd be very pleased to attend. I'll have a car, but very little knowledge about getting around Brisbane. So, if a local team would like an extra set of eyes, perhaps I could join you?
would love to come, missed the last two. hope it's near me. been inactive for 12 months, creating micro cachers....

Working in the afternoon but may be able to come along and say a quick gidday in the morning depending on your start time.
Simon.

Unfortunately we will be on a plane that day. We intend to visit Mariner who does a great job with Crazy Canadians at Tinbeerwah cache page. It is well worth the visit. Hope you have a fun day we will be thinking of you.
