Due to the old bridge being removed by DOC and the access stairs having been taken away, this site is no longer active until the cache is relocated.
r0lly, we are pleased you have agreed with us. The owner of this cache has been informed, but alas has chosen to ignore the photographic evidence provided and the email explaining the situation. Hopefully other cachers will heed our concerns and take precaution before attempting to find it. Geocaching is fun, but it is not worth losing ones life for.[xx(]

I agree with the comments below. This cache needs to be archived, or moved. There is no easy way to reach the cache location - I wasn't game enough to attempt it.
Thanks, Rolly.
Thanks, Rolly.
Found with Pipi and Kina on their way home. Thank goodness we had Kina with us, he's part mountain goat, he climbed down the bank (steps are gone), found the cache still in the hollow in the bank safe and dry, and signed the logbook on behalf of us all.
Please Note: This cache is now in a dangerous position, DOC have built a new swingbridge and have removed the old bridge and the approach track and replanted it. The old steps have been removed and the track below has partly slipped away.

Wow, this cache is now in a dangerous area. Note pictures of the track, with steps removed by DOC who left a messy narrow goat track that even a goat would hesitate on. Albeit, it is obvious they no longer want people to go down the old trail, they have not left written notification up above by the new Swing Bridge and new Noticeboard. Please be careful. Kina managed the trek down to the cave and easily found the cache. How come??? Well he has had 40 years bush and mountaineering experience and is part mountain goat/part rock wallaby!!!! He advised us it was a very nice cache, dry and all intact, and he signed the logbook.
Looks like we may be the LTF....Last to find???? In this location.

DANGER! This cache needs to be disabled. The approach track and steps have been removed by DOC and there is no safe way to reach the cache which remains on a cliff somewhere below the new Swingbridge.

Tried to find this one without the clues but no luck. Normally our GPS puts us right on top things but couldn't locate this one. There'd been lots of rain and maybe has been washed away. Will keep an eye on things to see if it's subsequently found then we'll try again.
Searched for a while in the undergrowth supposedly 5 metres from sign but couldn't turn up anything. Logging visit and as much to advise that the road to the viewing bridge is closed and although you can park back up the road it is a 400 metre walk down the hill and then back again. I was alone and probably spent a good 20 minutes fossicking about, shall return when there is more time and more light.
Cheers

While searching for the cache I accidently stubled across a "letterbox" cache hidden less than 5 metres away from this cache - small world I would advise using a 4WD given the condition of the gravel roads.

Almost a year to the day since I last tried this one. This time I made sure I was armed with spare batteries - didn't get a chance to use them, though. Was out on the bridge getting a decent fix when I heard my partner giggling from the undergrowth. She had found it before I even started. TNLNSL. TFTC.
Do not be decieved. The steps though narrow & steep are not many. 11 out of 10 for view! Despite tree cover GPS was accurate, and had us at the right spot immediately. Loved the view from the bridge. Will be back one day to show others. In - mini smiley frisbee, out - Rat!
What a wonderful location - thanks for taking us there

Out and about on Xena (BMW R1150RT)... we just had to come and find this one while staying at TechnoKittens bach in Turangi... Got frustrated looking for Kaimanawa Rd Cache... so Headed for Pillars of Herculese... In the wrong direction.. Up and down very steep forrestry roads before we realised it was the same road we were on before.. Duh... Never trust a GPS... So off we go again..
Sweating in leathers.. we stripped and walked into bush.. found ok... Beautiful spot.. Chatted to muggles who were following us.. Maybe they will take up the hunt!!

Hunting with XenaCommander, fabulous day but HOT even at 9:30am. Kaimanawa Road cache eluded us so vowing to return we roared off in search of the Pillars of Hercules..... XenaCommander following the GPS instead roads... he demonstrated his and Xena's (BMW R1150RT)ability to ride over ANYTHING by belting up a rutted gravel goat track... technokitten would have chosen a mountain bike over a motorbike for that little side trip.
Lovely spot and the cache was an easy find.

Neat spot for a cache. Took/left nothing. Those with no head for heights need not worry but it will set your heart racing. One of my favourite streams, Waihaha is nearby. Uppie

This is a great place, love the scene below. GPS struggled a bit, but all was well.

Not the best of roads to drive the Auckland Tramping Club Bus along. Passed a large group of school boys from St Kents out for a tramp before going rafting down the river. No on at the cache site os quick and easy find

What a miserable failure it was.
After a tiny break in the rain at Kaimanawa it was now raining quite hard. We had not seen a living soul after leaving SH1 so I did not expect muggle problems but I had just started down the stairs when a car drove up. My wife then opted to stay in the car as we had had a vehicle attacked in this area before. I pressed on hoping to grab the cache before I was followed. No luck they were right behind me.
The GPSr was useless in the conditions bleeping in protest so I tried to remember the clue which I had tried to commit to memory as the inkjet printed copy would not be legible for long in these conditions. My memory let me down and I searched the right sort of places in the wrong position.
Amazingly 3 more parties of muggles arrived in succession and must have wondered about the idiot standing around in the wet. I finally got out the paperwork and started to search in the right place. But I found nothing, nil, zilch!
After 20 minutes searching, soaked, muddy, and disgruntled I returned after an absence of nearly an hour, to a worried wife who was imagining I had taken the ultimate deep dive. My comment on exiting the car was this should only take five minutes!
I have walked in this area previously and can say that on a good day it is magnificent.

1.00pm - Pouring down with rain so headed off with umbrella in tow. Needed it more as a crutch to get the steps, wow they are steep! An easy find, thank goodness because GPS wasnt much help and was very wet at this stage. Thanks for the cache, will go back again on a fine day for another look (P.S Ambulance not needed, phew!)

Amazing pillars. Not a place we would have come to if it wasn't for geocaching. Thanks. NINO
Have always been to this place by kayak under the bridge. Made a pleasant change seeing the pillars from above. great walks in the area.

Raining so it was a bit of a challenge to get down the stairs with an umbrella. I am not usually worried about heights but the kids got a laugh when I let out a gasp after walking onto the bridge!

The signal was bouncing around, so our ten-year-old son, who is not bothered by vertigo, found the cache using the clue and a compass. We took a calling card left by some other cachers for our collection of signature items and left some Canada stickers. Another great place we never would have known about if not for geocaching--thanks!
Took several minutes to summon the courage to manage the stairs (those things have got to be pre-Cave Creek). From there it was easy enough to get to the site. Lost GPS coverage so went on to the bridge to get a fix and suffered a brief Shrek moment ("I'm looking down!" ). Just then the GPS died and the spare batteries were in the car. Tried a few likely looking spots, but without GPS or compass there was no find. Will try again next time I'm down that way.
Back from holiday in Taupo, and we never got to get to this.... tried around the 6th Feb, and got to the bridge - and the darn track was closed for repairs...AARRRGHHH.
Would have loved to see Hercules - will have to visit again next time we are in the area

Interesting spot and the fact that most of the river below the footbridge has been diverted through an underground tunnel to a powerhouse which is also underground. The outlet from this can be seen from the parking area below the concrete bridge on the way back.

Fantastic spot - I've been meaning to explore this area for a while.
However I think there is (or perhaps was - seems that the site is updated now?) a problem with the coordinates (maybe the old GD49 versus WGS84 datum selection problem 'coz it was about a 200m difference again!). I was suspicious when I noticed the distance from the carpath was showing as quite a bit more than the 100m mentioned. The track on the other side of the bridge was closed but I was thinking about the indicated 200m to go from there when it suddenly struck me... So I decoded the clue and sure enough - there it was! Nice hidey hole. (I assume others must have used clue also??!!)
I took the US$ quarter, and left an old Micro$oft promo CD and a used MacToy...
Thanks for luring me here!
