Logs

06-Dec-07
The bridge span has been replaced but the next 5km of road has deteriorated to the extent that a normal car will have difficulties. The cache site has overgrown with blackberry and scrub so cache will be moved to another site.

02-Dec-07
Please note that the bridge repairs are now complete - this cache is now accessible again - at least as far as where the blackberry starts!

26-Sep-07
The western span of the Whakapapa bridge has been removed and believe it or not there is a steel shortage and it will not be replaced until after December. Kapoors road entrance is a 6 to 8 hour round trip so this cache is temporarily disabled.

24-Aug-07
Access to this cache would normally be via the bridge across the Whakapapa River, a couple of kilometres east of Owhango. However, DOC have now closed that bridge to all access due to recent damage caused by high river levels and undermining.

You could still access it from the Kapoors Road end of the 42 Traverse, but it'll be a long bike ride/walk to reach this cache right now, unless you have a helicopter at your disposal!

Log book etc, very wet.

Oh Man!
I had not done my usual homework for this spur of the moment trip in our campervan and I paid the price with this cache.
Now on a previous trip I had found Backseat Booty so thought I knew the sort of road conditions to expect and bravely drove across the bridge and on into the unknown.
As we progressed my stress levels rose, first for the road conditions and then for the lack of anywhere to turn the van round. Ultimately there seemed there was only a few hundrd yards to GZ so we pressed on. It was only then I called up the previous logs on the Palm and shuddered some more!

Anyway we started to search and in my agitated state I overlooked the implications of the cache name and chickened out at braving the blackberry and the steeper terrain.
I was contemplating giving up when a coulpe of locals came by on motor cross bikes. I was hidden in the scrub at the time but they stopped and commented about the mad tourist being so stupid bringing a campervan in here!

At this stage I came out of hiding and felt I needed to explain things and so we got talking. He said it is just as well it was a rental van and I had to admit I owned it. It was then that the older guy commented on some remains lying nearby and even offered some directions.

WOWEEH!

He recommended I change from my sandals and shorts, which I followed, and then made the surprisingly easy find.
The contens were a bit damp as the plastic outer wrappings are shot. Sorry, I did not have any replacement covering along.

TNLNSL TFTC and the loss of more of the ever decreasing number of darker strands in my hair

In fact the vehicle sufferd no damage but I think a terrain rating of 3.5 or 4 might be in order.

Wow, neat!!! This is more like it! This cache would have to be one of our favourites. We both climbed down for a look, and hoped we could get back up again.Wink
We've been out this road before but its now getting a bit dodgey in places, probably 4WD stuff.
Out - coin
In - keyring.
We just loved this eerie cache.

A local Quad bike came along as we were ready to leave, it stopped and we got chatting about the tracks and the bush and fishing and the birdlife, it turned out to be the owner of Bushline Quads who provide real wilderness adventures in the area, it looked like fun and we decided we'd definitely be back to try it out!!

Beautiful drive in through the forest but only just managed the slippery road/track in our 2WD. Hadn't actually planned on doing this one and didn't have any cache notes or Palm. GZ appeared to be down a inpenetratable blackberry infested gully so decided to "phone a friend" for more info (Thanks Radio Nut for grabbing the hint off the PC). Found quickly after that. TNLN. Many thanks for the fun!

I see it's been almost four years since I visited 'Front Seat Booty' - this visit is long overdue.
The road past the bridge wasn't in great condition for conventional cars, so we walked the 3.4 km up the road. A quick bash into the undergrowth revealed some hidden treasure.
- dinosaur & keyring

Thanks for the cache!

Dropped in to grab the Aladin's Lamp TB. Cache in fine condition despite recent rainfall.

5th find for the day,, man that bush is thick,,

just a note of caution... when we visited there had been a lot of rain recently... watch where you put your feet,, and move the punga fern out of the road before you step thru it,, there are big holes... and just infront of the cache is a very wet slippery hole,, watch you dont end up under...

dropped in aladins lamp,, had to take out the transformer so it would fit,,, slipped it all in a zip lock cause the lid was a bit loose the container was so full,, great spot,, just very slippery...

Nice drive through the bush - but obviously not for some. There must be ghosts here as my car refused to start right by the cache site! I was contemplating the long walk back to evilC's place when a landrover rolled up out of the blue. A quick jump start and I was on my way again - phew! That's the last place I want to be stuck so far from home.

Decided I better get a move on otherwise Mardonasaurus might beat me to it, which would be embarrassing seeing this one was so close to home!

Headed out with my two sons during a break in the rain, but it started again on our way. Arrived to find DOC vehicles and people in numbers at the intersection - part of a SAR operation underway for a missing hunter. They wanted to know what we were up to (as we pulled up in the middle of their vehicles) so I explained, and then showed them the cache once it was found (which didn't take long even though I didn't know it was there previously). A good spot! The DOC staff hadn't spotted the "upside down" item themselves until we arrived, and appeared to find the whole idea rather amusing... perhaps another convert or two?

Took the 1992 winter games medal and 3d coin, left golf ball and transformer toy.

Hope their search turns out well also.

Thanks from evilC & sons!
