[Had an opprotunity to look for this one today. Went to the spot and found what looked like the perfect hising spot but nothing there. Used the clue which seemed to reinforce whereI thought it would be.]

There was a hole between a rock and a pohut that went back a wee way. Looked like an ideal spot but nothing in it. There was a trackin tunnel a metre or so away but the vollies checking that wouldn't have looked in there. Hole smelt strongly of bird droppings though.

Well, that's three DNFs. Goodbye Matangi Madness.

Navigull visited recently and couldn't find the cache. He is a persistent searcher so the cache may actually be missing, but I think he may have been in the wrong spot.

This is the second DNF in a row, and it wasn't a very hard cache, so I'd advise against planning a special trip to get it.

Another DNF and I will archive the cache.

I was leading a walking group visiting the Island today.
I casually said how would you like to explore the north end and they agreed. Of course I had a secret agenda but they were all impressed when I sugested GZ as a lunch stop.

This allowed me,with some help, plenty of time to search around but nil was found. Noted the rat trap close by.
After nearly 30 minutes probing I am pretty sure there was no cache present.

On the return to the Ferry I approached the chief DOC Ranger and explained the situation and asked if he or his staff had found the cache. He said that a contractor checks the traps but he had heard nothing from him. He was quite relaxed about a cache being placed there and quite happy for a replacement if needed.

3rd of four cache attempts around the Gulf this weekend.
2 @ Rangitoto (found) 1@ Tiri (not found) 1@ Waiheke (found).
Got here after sailing up from Rangitoto aboard trailer yacht Quinella.

Gave up after quite a search plus using clue. Are pretty sure I located the hiding spot, however no sign of cache.

There was a new pest trap on ground only a metre or two from where I think the cache had been so maybe DOC found and removed? or was I mistaken about the hidey hole?

Last find was over a year ago so who knows!

Third of the day after a sucessful amphibious assault.

Had decided to approach by kayak but nearly gave up when I got to Army Bay and saw it was 6.5kms as the crow flies. Anyway, set off with some trepidation and by the time I reached the edge of the known universe I new it was aptly named - Madness.

Out into the becalmed sea and only the strange race of Centaur like creatures to talk to. Human upper bodies wedded to variously metal or fibreglass lower halves floating in the water. Hands universally grasped around poles, with strings reaching down into the water, uttering strange language as I passed by ...more berlei Bert (I thought they were bras?).

Eventually land was sighted and I set foot once more upon terra firma. Watered and sustained I set off and without much ado found the cache where I released the Elvis jumping bean and left a lenticle (ah ha).

Nearly decided to turn Robinson Crusoe at the thought of the return journey but Devonport CITO called and I made it back for a total of 14kms paddling in 2hrs 15mins. That's 4kms more than I've ever paddled.

Thanks RotLA (yeah thanks - can you try closer to home next time!!!!!!).

P.S. Got to CITO and everyone appears to have b******d off to the Masonic - if I'd known that was on the agenda I'd have dropped the outboard on the back of the kayak

P.P.S. Got home to be informed by Sal that the kids had been waiting all day for a really long bicycle ride. Yahoo.

A great day for kayaking around the island. We left from Army Bay in the morning and got back before the wind got too horrendous. There are some fantastic sea caves and arches to explore on the east side.
+ bottle opener
- Angle flautist
Thanks, M@ and Cynthia

Madness, no, a great day out, a must for any nature lover. Dont let the terrain rating put you off the tracks on the island are very good. GPS led me straight to the cache, found quickly after checking two other likely hiding places. Thanks for the cache, it really is a fantastic spot.
