Suscoe was enjoying a day out in the Western District and into the east of SA for a quick visit.
We had a terrific day with some drizzly rain and cool chilly winds.
The countryside looks great with lots of sheep and cows.
Thanks to Beaker for this hide.
We drove in from the west, and encountered the road works crew regrading the track. We let to the east on a brilliant gravel track paid for by a previous Federal Government. We suspect the pine plantation had something to do with it, by we wished the giant tree was the real reason.

"That's a big one!" as my grandson used to say 20 odd years ago whether he was talking about trains, planes or trucks. These days he drives one of those big trucks in the mines around Weipa.

Here, we're not talking about any vehicle but a massive tree. Pa and were out for a drive when he saw the sign to here. I didn't complain as I guessed there would be a cache here. It was a quick find and sign for me while Pa discovered the tree.

TFTC beaker. Have a FP for evoking those memories.

Our first cache of 2023 and a good excuse to stop and stretch the legs during our summer road trip. Can't believe how old this tree is and to think how much has changed in the world during its life! Wonderful carvings nearby too. TFTC & Happy New Year!

Back in the region for the Kelpie Muster at Casterton, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to venture further afield for a cache.

A quick easy find then we spent some time admiring this magnificent tree.

I found this cache on a caching adventure out west by myself. Testing out the new van to see how it goes as a camper.

Today I would start at Baileys Rocks campground, where I camped last night and drive down through Casterton and Dartmoor to Nelson before quickly ducking over the border to SA, then heading back East to find camp at Sawpit Free campground near Portland.

It certainly is a big one. But is it really the biggest? I feel I’ve seen bigger.

Anyway, cache was easily found and it’s a fascinating history of the tree to read. Thanks for bringing me here.

Staying with our caravan club chums in Harrow, heading for Kaniva, we tripped to the Dergholm pub for some pizzas for lunch. This cache was found after our excellent meal. This is truly a mighty gum tree.

27-Mar-22
Found along with Boabtree, staying with the same group and after enjoying the lunch. All that and a cache on a warm, sunny, day! Thank you for placing it, Beaker, to bring us to view this awesome tree. Long may it flourish!

It is a BFT. As H423L said, we read the signs and contemplated. I'm glad this was not felled to make sleepers. Let sleeping dogs lie. Lets hope it goes on for another 700 or so years. If only tress could talk. Pics attached. We sat at the table for a while and sucked in the atmosphere here which seemed a little sweeter thanks to this tree. Razz

Thanks to Beaker and **clear skies** from TeamAstro. [^] Cache the planet! [^]

SL at 4:35pm. A nice afternoon drive out to this one with DarthVader69... until we got there, put on our wet weather gear, walked to the tree and then it decided to not only rain on us but hail aswell! I have been here before but maybe around 15 or so years ago. Ah the serenity...
*Watch out for kangaroos and emus on the drive in and out on the dirtroad.

I’ve been meaning to come here for a visit for many years now. Today was the perfect opportunity. As soon as the Geo Kids saw the sign and worked out we needed to walk the groans started. Ah, kids! The walk is beautiful through the trees and Bilston’s Tree itself is worth seeing. TFTC

After today’s days walk from Mount Arapiles (Golf Links Rd) to amigo Lake in Major Mitchell’s footsteps, Mrs Riddell packed Mr Riddell off back to home in easiness fir work tomorrow, while she set of with 2 walking companions to visit the Bilson Tree. Roughly 105 km round trip from Edenhope where Mrs Riddell is staying.
What else are we going to do responded the 2 female walking accomplices.

The tree was very impressive (we love big trees!)
And the carvings and information a real bonus. A favourite point for sure here.
TFTC an easy find.

Out with Bunadoorian trying to find caches on different maps for the UBD Victoria Country Road Atlas Challenge. Bunadoorian had his geocaching eyes on today as he found it first. Find 8 of 10 with 1 DNF to make 11 searched for. TFTC Beaker . I loved the story behind the cache and love this little part of Victoria. As others had said and Bunadoorian noted we had no reception here so after looking around the area we then viewed the tree from further back and our geo senses had us in the correct location. Thank you for helping bring us to this area. Map 15

16-Mar-19
Grub62 and I arrived at GZ to find that our mobile phones had no reception. And seeing as I had a different cache in mind for this page of the UBD challenge I had not loaded it into my GPS. I thought this is going to be interesting. After arriving close to where we thought GZ should be we started to check out all the possible hidey holes and eventually we got lucky. TFTC.

Found with the geo-crew after leaving Casterton and on the way further north and east. A pleasant walk in and we had GZ to ourselves so we checked out the tree before heading over to the cache. Alas a local worker wandered in to have his lunch so we had to tell him about the hide (although he was more interested in his sandwich). Many thanks -Beaker- - all good at GZ and a favourite point from us.

Found it after a nice short walk.

27-Mar-16
Found at 11.30am.
A spectacular tree. We have now visited No. 1 and No 2 largest redgums.
No. 2 is on private property near the Grampians.
If anything it appears larger than Bilstons.
In awe of such a plant that can live so long.

Day 4.4 of my 2100+Km 4.4 day road trip.

Visiting Woodlands Heritage Park, Ocean Grove, Warrnambool, Naracoorte, Keith, Ouyen, Lake Boga, Ballarat and just about every town in between. (Not necessarily in that order)

This was one of the caches I found on my travels.

It was another great day for caching, with the first signs of summer in spring. (Bring it on.)

After staying in Naracoorte over night, it was a new day and also there were caches to be found.

What a magnificent tree thanks for bring me here. I soon had the cache in hand and the log was duly signed.

'Scrat' visited your cache whilst on his Great Aussie Adventure.

The drive to find the big one, was entertainment in itself Smile
From the Dergholme 'Pub in the scrub', I headed east along a road the wended its way through the hills.
Several times it looked like I was coming to a dead end at a farm gate, but the road turned one way or another and kept going Smile
All the way to the Dergholme State Park and finally .... Bilston's Tree Big Grin

Oh good !!
Another chance for a stroll [^]
Not a long stroll, but very pleasant on a cool morning.
And into view came the tree !! [:o]

I must say that is mighty impressive Smile
Well done all those people who stopped it from becoming railways fodder [^]

Nearby, at the site of another tree that hasn't made it to such an incredible age, I found the cache safe and sound Big Grin

Find #4359

The company I work for has an annual shutdown between Christmas and New Year. I had decided to use this time to head out on a couple of caching road trips in order for me to qualify for two challenges... Victorian LGA Polygon Challenge and Victoria Country Road Atlas Challenge. After a successful northern trip with my housemate Obi-Cal, I headed south west solo this time for a bit more adventure.

Day 2, I had now arrived at the turnaround point where I would very slowly make my way towards the Grampians and eventually home.

On my way towards Hamilton now in a not too efficient way, but I needed a cache from Map 15 for the Road Atlas Challenge. I chose this one as it seemed the most interesting cache with some purpose. I was not wrong, a great cache wits some interesting history about it.

Thanks to Beaker for placing this cache. TNLN

I loved everything about this cache, I was very careful to avoid the kangaroos along the gravel road to the G.Z. After leaving the car I realized how magical this place was. Literally teaming with wildlife all the way along the track to the tree, which was simply awesome. It just boggles my mind to realize this tree has been here since around the time king Richard the lionhearted was leading his crusade. tnln sl tftc

Found a road with a sign that said Bilston's Tree 6 Kms - sounds interesting let's explore. We are on holidays, so we can take whatever side road we feel like. Checked the GPS - happy smiles - there is a cache there too! Had to pass slowly past some workers at a small bridge, they gave us a friendly wave as we went by. Came to a small gate with a sign on the fence which said - park car here, pedestrians through gate. Must be the place, so off we went on a pleasant walk thru open bush land with the GPS indicating we were getting closer with each step. Found the impressive River Red Gum ... And the cache. Big Grin at 10.30am Took: needle kit Left: gumnut PT - seemed appropriate! TFTC -Beaker- #1273

Well what to say?? That is a BIG tree. Found on dusk, it was a little bit of a mission getting to the right spot. Firstly, the GPS!! Hmm...should have thrown that one out the window as it was taking me where no small 2wd should go...until the penny dropped and I thought there has to be a much more logical way!! Indeed there was, and I found it no GPS required. However...this road is blocked due to massive tree across the road. Ok so no chainsaw, no 4wd, no way over it, no way under it...ahh but alas there is a way round it (well there wasn't, but I made one anyway, after all this girl is on a mission and it's getting dark!) So around the fallen tree I go heading west till I come across what I assumed was a parking spot to GZ...a mysterious gate...no signage?? What the? After a short stroll through lovely bushland listening to nature, there it was..one giant, magnificent red gum!! What a beauty! Thankyou for bringing me here Beakers Bunch...I drive past the sign about this tree every fortnight, it's about time I stopped. TFTC, SL TNLN.

It's hard to grasp the size of this tree from a photo, and then when you're standing six foot from the base, it's hard to grasp the size of this tree.
It's hard to grasp that the tree was "a seedling around 1200 A.D...", that's, like, really old!
Thanks for bringing me here Beakers Bunch.

P.S. I forgot to mention I was so dumbfounded inspecting the tree, when walking away I got my iPhone out to log the find and I suddenly thought "The Cache", I better go find it! Honestly, I forgot why I was here (another seniors moment).

Well, where to begin!!! After a day of finding out how the hell we get to the tree on a road that is marked on a map, we found the spot at 8pm last night - in the dark. Both geo kids wanted to see the tree in the day light so we headed home and came back today!!! A quick fine, signed and replaced then off to check out the tree. It is really beautiful Smile Took some photos and headed back to the car. Thanks for taking me to yet another place I would not have been to if it weren't for caching Smile

17-Mar-12
We’d had a big drive from Beaufort, via Mt Zero olives (yum) and on to the Naracoorte Caves for a quick visit. We had found out about this cache from our last one, Bailey's Monzonite, and since the other half is a forester, we just had to visit here to. And any way it was ‘more or less’ on the way home, that was until we encountered the road closures on the way out to the main road from Bailey's Monzonite..... On arrival, we looked around at the massive and I have to say, even the tree expert was impressed, it certainly is massive! A couple of cheesy photos later, a quick sign of the log and we were homeward bound. Thanks for the cache Beakers Bunch and for showing us this special tree.

Good old TOMTOM took me down Nolans Creek Rd which was a great fun drive in the X-Trail through lots of sandy bits and over some rough and corrugated areas....probably not for 2wd's. Saw Emu's and Roos and one bloody big tree once I got around to Glenmia Rd.

It's only taken us six years or more of driving past the signs to the tree to actually go and visit! We expected it to be somewhat bigger given its reputation, and some newish data written on the info board at the beginning of the walk shows it's actually 10m lower than in 1987. Hopefully it's a result of bad measurement rather than the tree sagging. some fascinating data behind it. TFTC BB.

Wow, what a big tree! A great spot for a cache and one i have been eying off for quite some time. Rumor has it that there is a field of very large and straight Red Gums a little closer to the Grampians which only locals know about... cannot wait to find it. Imagine a forest of redgums!

Second attempt. First time our gps took us down a different road to get us there through the bush on tracks that aren't there anymore :-/ so we decided to visit Warrock Station.
Ended up spending all afternoon there. Interesting place, even if a bit run down.
Next day we took the scenic route and came to this one on our way home.

My, Mr Bilston, it is a big one you have!

Doesn't look like anyone has been visiting this cache for a while.

Found at 2:30 on our way to Naracoorte, 2 car loads of muggles turned up just as we got out of the car so we had to mill around a while until they left. It's a big tree, but I was really expecting something much taller, I guess red gums aren't a tall species.
No swaps and thanks for giving me an excuse to finally visit the tree.

Found 14:15. Last of only 3 FFTD and 250 kms later. Weekend jaunt down The South-East to escape the rat race with chizbeki. Mr E forgot to load the appropriate Maps onto the GPSr, so took a little while to realise the quickest way there, got there in the end. Circled cache for around 30 kms and got no closer than 5.5kms. Lovely area, hot day and long grass gave the caching experience the fear factor. T: TB, LNSL. TFTC.
