Nice walk there with all the sights. Only unfortunate thing was, that the penguin walk was closed. Thanks still!
Answer sent.Walked around here, although some paths were closed, so had to find other ways. A really interesting place, thank you very much for the invitation to look around.
What a fascinating place even though the tide was nearly high when we arrived. It was good to read about the fossilised trees and penguins. (Didnt see any penguins though.) Thank you
I'm down from Paihia for the Dunedin Mega event. We did a lot of caching around there between Friday and Sunday. Then on Monday we went down to Invercargill. The plan was 1 day coming down picking up puzzles as we headed south. Tuesday doung the Big I and the penguin series. Fortunately we also had time to collect Cliften Swing Bridge and Monkey Island. Today is Curio Bay, Slope Point and Bluff as well as a few in Invercargill. Thursday was driving to Middlemarch for the old Donovan cache while collecting a lot of solved puzzles on the way and generally doing most of Middlemarch. Friday we headed up to Christchurch where I was going to spend the weekend with my cousin before flying home on Sunday. We had a great day today despite having to wait out a few showers. Our initial plan was to do Bluff first but the tide was right to come out this way first. I was disappointed that the path to the beach was closed so we didn't get an up close view of these fossilized trees. We could only get to the lookout as it was penguin breeding season. Thanks for the earthcache that brought us to this very southern part of NZ
A plan was hatched quite a while ago when the Dunedin Mega was announced to come over to the South Island again.I have only been to New Zealand twice before and I loved the South Island. So a chance to come back for a Mega was a no brainer for me.Everything was booked and I flew in last Saturday week after a bit of a delay. So after a great few days at Mega central in Dunedin its time to say goodbye. So Day 10 of my Mega NZ trip begins and Im on my own again and so its time to head South to Invercargill which is my next stop for a couple of days. What a great little area here and a very interesting read on all of the info panels along the way.A great view from the lookout then a walk along the rocks.I did not know about the very old Forrest that was in New Zealand.Answer has been sent to the CO.Thanks The Bohemian TFTEC.
Ive been stomping through the streets of this city for years, and youd think Id have seen it all. But no, Ankh-Morpork still finds ways to surprise me. Though "surprise" here mostly means discovering new, peculiar smells or stumbling across strange behaviors that make you question how humanity hasnt accidentally wiped itself out yet.Take, for instance, the street performers. Its not enough that theyre out there juggling flaming ferrets or swallowing swords longer than they are tall. No, whats really curious is how people keep giving them money for it. Ive seen a bloke play the spoons so badly I had to arrest him for disturbing the peace, and yet there were people applauding. Perhaps I missed my calling. Then there are the guilds. Not the big ones like the Assassins or Thievesthose at least have some twisted sense of order. Im talking about the Guild of Scantily Clad Beggars. They think they can earn more coin if theyre half-naked. Im no economist, but I suspect there are cheaper ways to get pneumonia. And dont get me started on the secret societies. Theyre everywhere, and none of them know how to keep a secret. You cant throw a rock in this city without hitting a bloke in a cloak whispering conspiracies to another bloke in a slightly different cloak. I once busted the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night after they held a secret meeting in a pub, right under the citys most infamous gossip. And then theres the architecture. Or what passes for it. Buildings that lean so much you wonder if theyre drunk, alleyways that look like theyve been sketched by a mad artist, and bridges that seem to exist just to mess with you. The Backscratch Alley? Pure chaos. You could lose an entire squad of watchmen in that mess and find them a week later, living off rat-on-a-stick and trying to invent their own guild. So, yeah, this citys full of curiosities. Most of them either smell, steal, or want to stab you, but you cant deny Ankh-Morporks got... character. Or something like it.
CaptainVimes and I have crossed the pond to attend the Geo Toroa mega in Dunedin and tour around the South Island for two weeks.Really cool spot although we came at high tide. Thanks The Bohemian and happy caching
This was a wonderful place to visit. Today it was wild and windsweapt and very atmospheric. We had to wait a while for the tide to retreat but still occasionally got caught out by a big wave! Thank you x fav point for you
So good to bring our Jr Cacher hair. We went out to the point then came back to the cafe for a tasty pie and coffee before taking the back track down to the beach.
Down this way checking out the Catkins and since this Earthcache was here and we were checking out the petrified forest the Earthcache had to be done. Fascinating to see petrified logs in the tide, pic of same sent to CO along with the answer to the question. Thanks for the placement of the Earthcache The Bohemian.
I believe it was Gondwana possibly! Crazy windy today! Beautiful site. Did the highland view too! No penguins but it was the wrong time of day.
Gevonden samen met Bald Eagle op onze trip door Nieuw Zeeland op 25 mrt. 2024 17:16. Dank je wel The Bohemian (via Earthcache Master) voor deze cache. Groetjes van mij 1700 uit Eindhoven
#2330 (Tontako Team) Kia Ora from Spain! We found this cache during our New Zealand / Aotearoa holidays. The place is awesome!!! We came for a 5 minutes walk and ended up having lunch by the sea and learning about the petrified forest and the unique fauna in the area.TFTC
Hello from Seattle, geocaching ground zero! This was a fascinating place, lucky to time our visit with low tide. Thanks!
We are camping here at Curio Bay and the views here are so wonderful! The petrified forest is very interesting as well.
Nice examples of fossilized wood down here, i spotted some. Thanks for the cache./herrFamaxe from Sweden
Weather had fortunately improved considerably from when we were at Slope Point. Needed to be careful on the boardwalks but that just meant a slow wander enjoying the views. Thanks.
Found with Dali87 within our amazing trip around New Zealand. Thanks for nice cache ....................................................................... TB Koumesovo geopivo DDEV7M
Cesta je fakt moc pkn a myslm, e ped i tu slavnou australskou Great Ocean Road. Today I drove from Dunedin to Invercargill and chose the Southern Scenic Road. And I did well. Beautiful landscape and lots of attractions around. The morning was beautiful, then showers and strong winds came, but I still went on three shorter walks to the lighthouse, to the waterfall and on the beach to the petrified trees. I found 20 caches on the way and I really enjoyed the day. Thanks to everyone for their caches and greetings from the Czech Republic.
**Log about this cache:**A very nice place, so special that you can see such a old tree`s in stone!**General log:**After years of planning and the canceling of trip due to the corona crisis, the time had finally come: ***"more than 5 weeks in New Zealand"**.* And how beautiful it was! Visited both the north and south islands, many tourist attractions have a cache nearby so I could do some as well. Lots of virtuals and earth caches too and traditionals. But also done a few multi caches here and there also even a mystery and wherigo cache. The trip to New Zealand was great and we saw a lot of nice places. The country has so many different types of landscapes. And the nice thing was that it is winter in the Netherlands but summer in New Zealand Too bad it takes so long to fly and that the flight is so expensive otherwise i can go here next year again. Now you can enjoy it, logging the caches is also part of it. I will try to email the answers for the earthcaches and virtual caches to the relevant co`s as soon as possible. But first log all caches and upload the photos .

During our amazing trip through New Zealand we also visited the Catlins. In addition to Slope point, the petrified forests are a must for everyone. Unfortunately it was high tide, so we only got a good look at a few pieces of tree trunk. The penguins also failed to attend. Despite all this, we thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful day.Cache owner, thank you for taking us here.
Drive to get some fresh air. Have been passed here numerous times, today the tides were right to stop and explore. Thanks for bringing me here
Visited GZ and then visited the petrefied forest, with good views from the observation platforms. Submitted the answers to the CO. Fav point for the location here!
Day 5: The CatlinsOur journey today took us down to the Catlins for a whirlwind tour of all the sights we could squeeze into a day trip. Of course, there were geocaches to be had too, plus plenty of photos and sightseeing. Thankfully the weather held up for most parts today, so we could enjoy all the great scenery and the geocaches as well!(end of the cut and paste bit)Another one of the highlights of my Catlins trip was to see the Petrified Forest. The pictures online really doesnt do it justice, so I am glad I had the chance to see the logs and the stumps for myself. They certainly did not disappoint! Thanks for the EC, and as an owner of an EC about petrified wood, I am doubly glad to see some in the wild!
Together with Travelser I'm going Down Under. We are driving around with a motorhome. After 7 weeks driving around through Australia we arrived the 2th November in New Zealand. For ten days we will cross the Northern Island and than for 2 weeks the Southern Island.During our trip we of course search for several caches. Most of them brought us to very nice spots, like this one.All the CO's, and in this case The Bohemian, thanks for bringing us here and give our trip a special accent.
After traveling around Australia with Oopie for 7 weeks, we have now been traveling with the camper in New Zealand for 4 weeks. Along the way we will of course also visit various types of caches in beautiful places, including this one. Thanks CO for creating and laying this cache.
During an awesome New Zealand vacation I visited together with Wombatmann (who sent in the answers to the CO) this amazing placeThank you very much for this Virtual Cache
We really enjoyed our visit to the area. The fossilised trees were fabulous.A fe2 years ago the coastline near us lost 10m of dunes in a storm and it revealed some fossilised trees, nothing like this though. TFTEC
I visited this interesting location together with BK-Br.Nature is amazing! Our answer was sent to CO.Thanks for this earthcache.
We came here just before the water started to cover the trees again. Nice impressions. TFTC
Beautiful place this petrofied forest. Amazing how good trunks and logs can be recognized. Thanks for making this place an earthcache!
Windiest day for a visit to Curio Bay and the petrified forest, it was hard to stand upright at times. Penguins nowhere to be seen either. Thanks for bringing us here. TFTC
1MinnieMoo and I pulled for this one next. This was certainly an interesting little lesson to be learnt in the local geology.. not to mention all manner of penguins - that were not seen today.1MinnieMoo has submitted our answers. A fantastic place for an earthcache. TFTEC The Bohemian
16/9/2023 Find #6534Day 8 of the Fangsoki/1MinnieMoo New Zealand South Island adventure. We were on our way now from Dunedin to Invercargill, with a few stops in between. This was one of them. We pulled up and wandered up. Jeepers its windy today!! We took some time to read the signs, then headed down the boardwalk and along the rocks. I had hoped for a chance to see a penguin or two today, but sadly I think they were probably somewhere well sheltered from the winds too!!Such a different ecological area here tho with the petrification of a whole forest. But I guess the location of it lent itself to just the right conditions. Thanks for the earthcache The Bohemian.
Cache 1483 This months geo challenge calls for an Icon run and one of those Icons is an earth cache hmmmm which to do? I decided on Slope Point as my virtual so it was only a hop skip and a jump for a quick drive to Curio Bay from there, In my childhood I grew up camping a lot of summers in Curio Bay, and love exploring the forest and finding shells fossilised in rocks, as well as swimming with the Dolphins in the bay. Such fond memory’s ️ Thanks for bringing me back here Answers sent T4TEC
A nice earthcacha at an incredible place. The fossilised forest is impressive as you can still see trunks ! We tried to spot yellow-eyes penguins but I think we were too late in the morning.
Very cool to get down and see the petrified logs and stumps. Amazing to know that the largest collection in the world is right here. Found with Daniel_K. Ngā mihi, TFTC

Beautiful day to explore this part of New Zealand. Saw parts of the petrified forest, but no penguins. Thanks for the cache.
Answer was sent. I spent the morning here looking at the petrified logs and then came back this evening to search for penguins. No luck with the penguins, but it was still a great day. TFTC
Love this place, beautiful spot with wild waves and interesting creatures. I even got a bit of an action shot in my selfie! Cheers and TFTC!
I love fossils so Curio Bay was a must-visit site when planning our New Zealand trip. Had such a great time we’re planning on going back tonight to look for penguins.
Today from Slope Point to Cathedral Cave I found 14 caches.
It was a nice trip.
All caches was OK.
Yes I have seen the long logs.
Thanks to all.

What an incredible area; no penguins today but we saw several Hector's Dolphins and a solitary sealion.
Thanks for the cache, we had a great day.
Thanks for the cache, we had a great day.
On a tour bus holiday and stopped here briefly. Would have liked to spend more time but heavy rain arrived. TFTC
Found on an evening walk before we engaged in some (successful!) penguin spotting. What an amazing natural sight!
Much as I love our Aussi cousins and I have 3 kids living there, I am kinda glad Gondwana land split. Got some awesome photos of waves hitting the rocks. We timed it right getting here. The tide had turned but everything was still visible.
I have been here many times. We use to have family picnics nearby when I was a child. It is a great place. Thanks.
We are on a road trip of the South of the South and collect in here on our way past. We were fascinated by the history here. We also saw a hoiho hopping up the beach to the burrow while we were there
This was a lovely start to the day. We enjoyed a stroll, checking out the petrified forest and the bush walk as well.
Thanks for putting this here
Thanks for putting this here
Visiting to see the trees again, but as well as looking for penguins - we didn’t see any but we could hear them in the bushes!
Such a unique place here!
Anyway, thanks for the EarthCache to enrich our experience!

Not the warmest of afternoons. Also later waited for penguin returns. Gave up at 2000hrs and tucked up in the campervan. Tftc
What an amazing place. We were lucky to be able to get right down to the shoreline, and spotted a couple of reef herons as a bonus. TFTC
Staying at the NZMCA Park Niagara Falls so we could come at low tide early this morning to see the petrified forest. Disappointedthat the steps were blocked off at the bottom so we couldn't get to see the woodgrain pattern in the rocks (read about this). All the penguins must have gone out for breakfast too.

It is always nice and impressive to come here. This time little geocacher understood better what was going on. As we went down, he spotted trunks, measured their length and identified branches and stumps. Thanks for placing this here.
Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I now live full-time in our caravan & travel the country visiting places we want to visit we are now parked up at the NZMCA Niagara campsite for a couple of days, exploring in & around the area we went for a bit of a drive this afternoon & thought it would be rude not to check out this Earthcache answers have been messaged to the Cache Owner pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally TFTC ... A quick trip down to these parts with work. Visited petrified forest, what a fascinating place. Answer sent to CO.
Late evening Mr P and I went to look at the petrified forest - lots of people were about however it was such a large area we had no trouble finding our piece of the rock shelf to enjoy the view. Beautiful.
