Shame to see this one go, especially as I know exactly where it should have been.
Thanks for the puzzle anyway.

I had scoped out a new GZ location, but now that I look at it, there's not too many locals who haven't found this one, and the GZ area deserves a new cache.
For those who hadn't found it: the coords of the shell's trajectory led to a culvert under the Castledare Miniature Railway track, where there was (usually) a container held on with magnets. The trouble is that the rush of water after heavy rains kept washing it away.

So I solved the puzzle at work today and rushed out with Shael6636 to claim my prize..... However it was not to be. After pouring over the logs and searching through some very unsavory reeds I came out empty handed. I'm wondering whether it had been affected by the last big storm....? Nevertheless TFTH!

Well last night was the third attempt I have made to locate and retrieve this cache with no success again. Out with Askalon&sons we searched the entire GZ including wading to the spot that the GPS said was Ground Zero but couldn’t find anything other than mossy bites.
We resorted to searching the "logical" hiding locations and the not so logical before going through the last logs and checking the pictures of the Cache container and the view from the correct GZ, and after another 15 minutes of searching the correct GZ (we are presuming) I have to say I believe this cache has been set free and is either floating somewhere on the river or has capsized and sunk.
Which is really frustrating [:p] as I solved this cache over 9 months ago...I should have grabbed it then. Thanks for the puzzle and the hunt bearleft as this has been one of the most enjoyable puzzles to solve......even if i didnt find it

Took a couple of attempts with the maths, but found the culvert in the end. No sign of any cache in the vicinity however, and I've only just realised how long ago the most recent logs were. Perhaps it's gone astray.
Thanks anyway.

*Found using the family group name Mackerals. Have decided to log it under my new profile.
Worked out the co-ords some time ago but this was the first opportunity to check it out. Didn't take long to locate it - th log is very damp, probably needs replacing. TNLN
found on our third attempt, last Sunday we stood above it and tried to figure out where it could be (the GPS reckoned on going off 'track' into the water for 15m ) we looked in all the likely places except the correct one. found with the help of friends.
Logbook very damp but managed to sign it

Success was ours - just shows tenacity pays off. Cache was wet and we dried it out as best we could. We searched in this area when we were here on Saturday but the water level was so high it made a thorough search very difficult. We enjoyed solving this one. Thanks Bear_Left
Found after 3rd attempt (had to go back for a refresher in maths!!). Logbook was still a bit damp, but managed to sign. This was a most enjoyable cache to do and enjoyed the final destination.

We solved the puzzle and the GPSR took us to within 5 meters or so of the cache. We then looked around for a likely hidng place and one wet foot later we had the cache in our hands. The contents were quite damp so the logbook could not be signed. TFTH.
I solved the puzzle more than 10000 km away. Today I got 10 meters from my calculated coords, but got cold feet [8)] Nice place to visit anyway.
After doing the maths last night, tonight was the day to test the results. My first attempt at getting to GZ left me across the water. Once I'd found the right way in, everything made sense. After a pleasant walk out to GZ in the dark, the cache was found soon afterwards. It was gratifying to know that my year 10 physics from over 30 years ago was still of use. Thanks for an enjoyable cache.
We worked out the co-ords for this a while ago and finally got down here today to see if we were right, and we were. What a great place this is. Thanks B_L, we really enjoyed this one.

WooHoo - couldn't believe our "luck" in solving this one! Had to get GeoSon to do the calculations but that still left us with the dilemma of working out how to get from original coords to new GZ. I actually learnt something new with our GPS and voila - we were on our way!
GZ in an area I have never previously visited and after nearly abandoning the hunt at the culvert we thought was the one we decided to investigate further. Didn't see Dudley Darecastle although there were a few muggles about.
Success at last! A very clever puzzle and hide! Thanks to Bear_Left for getting us all involved and bringing us to this area.
Amazing that this cache has been untouched for 9 months and then 2 people have a go at it on the same weekend!!

Did the homework before flying here. Arrived and knew we were on the right track. But only got within 10m of GZ. Beaten back by the weather and it's consquences. It was so wet even the tiny ants were abandoning their homes. The trail was flodded just a further 20m beyond GZ so we had to back track instead of doing the full loop.
Arrived back at the car just as the next downpour of rain arrived. whew!

Came out this way previously only to find that it had disappeared when I re-checked the website, thank goodness I had the correct calculations. Very quiet and without the mozzies at midday. TFTH and challenge Bear_Left
I enjoyed this one... nearly went out to look in the wrong spot, then all that physics I studied in high school come flooding back. Lots of mozzies at 18:30 tho. TFTH
Seeing as how this cache was replaced 4 months ago, I came by at 5pm to find it as I was in the area and now knew exactly where it would or should be. Reached in and sure enough...there it was! A large spider came out with the cache as well! That was exciting! Gave the cache a flick and no more spider. Quite a wet area, but managed to get the cache, a photo of its hidey hole and return it without getting wet. The log was quite damp, but I was able to carefully write an entry. Thanks for a good challenge with this one Bear_Left.
Did the calcs thinking I should do at least one puzzle while in Perth. Hmmm, didn't have too much luck at plotted GZ which sounds very similar to other descriptions. Perhaps from the look of it didn't go far enough down the logs. Certainly nowhere to hide at the plotted GZ, and checked a few other likely locations but came up blank, and quite wet from wading through the swamp in work clothes - luckily after work! One for the future if I get back over there.
After reading the description of the cache I figured I knew where it might be located, the calculations backed my theory but I haven't had the opportunity to test the theory. Went to give it a try last weekend but it was muggle central so postponed til this weekend. I was glad to see that my calculations were right. Nice hide.
"Curses!" cried Perfectly Beastly Lionel (who would be known as PBL to his friends, if he'd had any), "the fuse on the damn dynamite keeps getting wet, and now the bally lot has disappeared!"
"But, wait, what's this?" he cackled, leafing through the latest edition of Villians Weekly (which comes out three times a year, the lying scoundrels) "This new plastic explosive is much, much smaller than dynamite, and is completely waterproof as well! Ha! THIS will cook your caboose once and for all, Dudley Darecastle!"
But will it? Or will you find the plastic and save the day in the nick of time?

Stopped in to check on the cache, and it's definitely not where it should have been. If it is still there it's under water.
Recommend gum boots & waders if you are coming out for a maintenance check PBL, there's a lot of water around at the moment.

DNF. Ursula worked on the trajectory equation for quite a while, and thanks go to Pat of LP&N for confirming our final co-ordinates were very close. Like others, we first searched in the long grass for a while then searched elsewhere but couldn't find it anywhere. I did find a good bum-bag where the now archived 'Snake Pit' cache was located. After reading the cache notes on the PDA, I found that urch's log was very helpful. Turns out GZ is 25m away from where we started! Searched this spot thoroughly 4 times in total after walking away and coming back to it again and again but there is no cache there at all. Very wet area at the moment as well, was hard to keep my boots dry. This might require a maintenance check or a "you're blind, its still there!" check
Really enjoyed the walk around this area though, so thank you Bears for bringing us to another part of Perth we didn't know about!

Called in to exchange trackables. I was going to say the Nikon TB wasn't in the box but after looking at the listing page I do remember a lanyard. Only swapped the geocoins.
Thank you Bear Left for a great hunt and a bit of fun with the puzzle.
Dropped off TB Dorkfish and Jin Mao Tower entry card
Took Civil War GC and Ghost of PaddyK TB (to solve PaddyK002 cache).
A great spot, but too many mozzies to hang around for too long.

At last! 3rd time lucky... I must know every corner of this circuit now! Finally got my calculations to direct me to the right area and there it was - very nicely tucked up safe and sound, despite my earlier fears.
Took nothing, left Civil War GC to keep further guard.

O NO! Has dastardly PBL really struck this time?? My reappraisal of this puzzle sent me to another area - only to find it quite blackened from a recent fire...
Or am I yet again in the wrong place???

I only hope Dudley wasn't around if PBL has already fired his cannon... the culvert was showing serious signs of a side on hit. [xx(]

We worked out the position of this cache by hand in April 2005 just after our last visit to WA. We decided as we were down at Curtin this afternoon that it would be a good time to bag the cache. We had a quick find once the walker had passed.

Time for a spot of maintenance, and it'll probably need taking away. So don't be disappointed if it's not there!
At long last got around to getting this one. Being sitting on the coordinates for awhile and had planned to this one two weeks ago. Even headed out looking for it before I realised I had the coordinates wrong and was facing a 100 km drive! Turned out I had enter 31 instead of 32! Duh! My thanks to Lyn Pat and Nathan for their help in doing the maths and to Amby Ant who confirmed my error for me . So anyway got there today. Like others before me found the coordinates out by about 10 metres. After some scouting around, thinking why would you hide it there, we found it. As Team Gunn Parker reported, the cache is damp, the logbook is now dump and the cache really does need some tender loving care. Okay, dropped off the The General geocoin who has been looking a train for sometime and took Big Kahuna Travel Bug. Thanks for an interesting cache.
Found with Dad. What to come back to ride the train. Left Nikon TB, took nothing.
We dropped in today to leave two travel bugs behind and found the container must have been very wet at some time, some contents are damp but the log book and things inside that bag are ok, we tried to dry it a bit but needs a bit ok TLC.

Eighth of twelve finds on my last night in Perth for this trip. I have logged a similar cache to this one in Adelaide, so I knew what mathematics was required. When I looked at my final coordinates on the map I was pretty sure I had got it right. I remember that my coordinates were about 15m out in Adelaide, and so they were here. My GZ would have required me to wear waders (or Speedos ). Still there are only so many places it could be, so I checked them out. When that failed to turn up the goods I read the logs. Elmofreak's log gave me a clue, and I found the cache at 2105.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the cache was wet. I poured about a quarter of a cup of water out of it. The contents aren't in bad nick, and the log book was completely dry in its zip-lock bag (even though it hadn't been sealed properly). There are other things to report, but I'll email Bear_Left with those--wouldn't want to give anything away here. I made no exchange. Thanks to Bear_Left for the cache.

What a difficult one to do. Lots of maths involved and red herrings to mull over and discard. Spent hours on all sorts of mathmatical possibilities. Out in the field I spent well over an hour checking under all sorts of things as my GPS only goes down to 10,s unit of metres when kilometers from any reference point.A single unit of a bearing is darn wide also.
Found at 2.37pm.
The pencil sharpner blades are rusted.I left it in the container.

Went to find this one today. While I was making a general inspection of the area looking for likely spots I noticed a small black, and open, box on the ground. At first I thought that it may have been the cache. On closer inspection I found that it was some sort of a needle safety box with one needle in it. I assume that it has been used. This put an end to my search for the day.
I don't know if this is indicative of what occurs in this area all the time but it put me off for the day. If I return I will be wearing some heavy duty footwear and have a poking stick.
BTW I have removed the offending item.

hmm thought it was the 12th today.. and have been logging everything as such.. ah well ignore the logbooks
Found this one tonight after a plesant walk with Tara-doggy. My coords pointed to a very damp spot - and i did think it was a bit off.. but looked anyway.. cos it looks like lots of other people have too...
Ended up re-reading the cache page and figured it out from there (bin a while since i read it.. solved it when it first appeared... a while back....)
Didn't find the code word on the log book... i'm probably just clueless?
Thanks for the hunt

Well Bear you wanted to complain about my cache Roundabout. My turn! You might have added in the difficulty rating for this one about specialist equipment i.e. SCUBA equipment. Not happy Jan, I had to extract my feet from my nice warm soxs, roll up my jeans, and then emerse them in the cold chilly water. The things we go through for geocaching. Then it rained on the way back to the car. I knew I should have put that wetsuit on.
(sigh)Some kids just won't keep out of the puddles. Why didn't you do a Mindsocket and just reach down from dry soil and pick up the cache?

Found finally. Thanks to my friend who solved the puzzle. Took 15 minutes to find the right place. Lots of muggles passed by. Dropped TB Movin On Bear. Took nothing. Thanks for a challenge and fun.
It was not very far from Snake Pit, however it took a while to find the right place. As expected, it was found easily when you know what to look for. Swapped with other TBs. Thanks for a challenge and cache.
I thought I had this one figured out months ago and today I finally get to go driving past. I had a look at a map and things seemed to match up, then when I arrived I discovered my co-ordinates are over the road and in someone's backyard. Bugger. My excuse is its been a long time since I've done any physics, going back over my sums now...

This one was a quick sidetrack as we were driving past. We knew our maths might not be the most accurate in getting GZ and we didn't remember to bring the description.
However rocking up on site all the bits we did remember made a great deal of sense. Bel would have been happier if I had remembered it all before she ended up knee deep in water. Our entered co-ordinates had us in the middle of the river. Remembered the last part of the puzzle and had success. Cache is dry and looks ok.
We took nothing left some water bombs and a bit of blood with the local squadron of mosquitos.
Another Bear problem out of the way.

Wow! There's a lot more water about than when I placed it!
The contents were still dry, but I took along a hot glue gun (and a 12V>240VAC inverter) today and sealed the holes, just in case the water level gets even higher with the winter rains.

Having worked out the distance I put this information in the PC GIS I have access to and overlaid it onto an aerial image of the area concerned. It gave me such a good picture of where I had to go I didn't even turn on the GPS to get there.
With all the rain we had lately the area either side of the cache is under water so be prepared to get wet feet if you are going for this one in the near future.

Now I wish I had paid more attention in Maths and also when they talked about ballistics in the Army Cadets. I'm glad this one isn't that close to me otherwise it would frustrate the c#$p out of me!!I'd also be interested to see how other people got their formulas and I've got to come up with some ideas for some caches like this down this way.

Googling "projectile 45 degrees range" gives you lots of pages with pretty simple answers to this problem. That 45 degrees is a real lifesaver!

We don't know how others came to work out the location but our tried and true method of using our maps did the trick. We also used an online conversion site to change the MPH to M/sec and then an online balistics site for the firing distance.
We were only 4m out from the cache when the GPS said "0". Not bad we thought for such a messy way to work out a cache.
We would love to see the formula and ideas used by other teams so we can compare methodology.

Found this one on my second attempt, I search high and low at the location given for a clue as to where the shell may land but there were a lot of muggles around and one even parked right next to my car and the location, so I left here feeling rifled.
I knew the area where the shell would land and set off yesterday morning to search for it in the little time I had before work but could not, I went back again this morning and walked another 30 mtrs farther and there it was, well hidden and with in reach. My swap item would not fit so I traded nothing and replaced the container. A WORD OF CAUTION, WHEN REPLACING THIS CACHE BE VERY CARFUL TO MAKE SURE IT IS SECURE.
Thanks Bears

Another FTF for TRD!! Excellent!
Bear_Left....this one was awesome. Brainpower was all it took- and voila! Cache! We were a bit naughty and did this one at night...a la our usual style! Great place- well hidden cache- just brilliant! Thought there might be a FTF certificate in there somewhere- just so we could prove we have done a FTF- but never mind- we'll get one soon I'm sure!! We look forward to more of your caches if they're as good as this one!! Thankyou For the Awesome Hunt!!
