What a beautiful spot. Found an unexpected urupa on the way there. So much history. A fav point for me
Beautiful view of Mt. Tarawera at the cache site. Tree fork snapped a while ago by the looks of it. Pretty hard to get to from the path
Bashed my way through the bush to get there, do not recommend jandals for this! Found the fork in the tree, only to see it had snapped off, then discovered the ice cream container and got excited, but only a cache inside. Tftc! Found with kre8ive.
Glad I ventured off into the bush and got this one. Well worth it, such a lovely spot. Didn’t take too long to locate once at GZ. Tftc
Oh boy. The bush bashing is real! Careful of the edge! GPS was a few meters off for me. But if you’re seeing the tree you should be able to see the cache!

Found after a bit of searching and Bush bashing.

#13,049. Enjoyed the short walking exploration in Lake Tarawera, Rotorua. Part 1 was interesting, but we would not describe it as an “abandoned structure nearby” though. Could not find a way to part 2 from there without some significant bush bashing, which we thought would not be appropriate around this sacred place. So decided to backtrack to the trailhead to find another way to part 2. GZ was all quiet at the time of our visit. Quick find once at the correct spot. The cache was in good condition, all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

253. We were dripping some family back at the wharf after they joined us camping for a bit. We had a bit of time to kill so went and found this one. After a little bush bash we found it at the hint. TFTC
Nice track around a part of the lake we hadn't ventured around. Was there photographing the mausoleum for Find-A-Grave so decided to hunt out some caches too. TFTC
More of a DNGCE (did not get close enough) as I couldn't find my way to the location. Got within 14m on the high path but clearly no way down so backtracked and made my way to the hint coordinates where my interpretation of the sign meant I probably shouldn't be bush bashing my way around here. Couldn't find a low path to take, so abandoned the search here.
Weekend in Rotorua.
A litte road trip.
Sunday is focused to discover this beautiful area a little bit by picking up some interesting hides.
Such a place!
The biggest task was to locate easy way to GZ.

Since the easter bunny hasn't visited yet, a bit of caching was in order. With the kids practicing their egg finding skills, we soon found our way along the geotrail to GZ. Great view. TFTC
Short of time so wasn't going to do this one but glad we did-not sure about some of the clue but we went straight to it-tftc
Took the right hand track and didn’t end up anywhere, then took a track to an old Masaleum. Found our way to the right track and had a nice sit down looking at the views. Lovely and quiet walk.
This was my last full day in Rotorua after caching with friends yesterday. I concentrated on a few that required some hiking which was out of the question with one of the friends.
This was a nice walk up to GZ and back. TFTC.

Approached via Kayak, just for the fun of it, but it wasn't the easiest way .
Found a break in the scrubby cliff to scramble up, and reached the track without too much trouble.
Found it quite tricky to locate the right spot, but when I did, the cache was in plain sight. There's a nice view from the GZ
Thanks for the motivation for a mission to escape the family and the batch for a couple of hours

Found it, was looking in wrong place at first but soon spotted the geo trail, now to find the way back to the car
Nice walk to GZ. Our GPS had us 15 metres away. Once we widened our search we found it. Great view of Mount Tarawera. Dropped off our pathtag. A favourite point from us. Thanks.
Interesting and cool spot out here. Made our way into the bush following a trail of sorts. Then came across the mausoleum. Out of it. Then carried on and found a track. Lol that would be right. Really nice views at different spots. Enjoyed our adventure out here. Tftc
Another good cache in this good trail of caches - great spot thank you - photo attached

Sometimes I make it hard for myself
I followed along a path to the right of the boat sheds, following what I thought would be a track around the coast, now it probably does, but for me, the path I was on, took me to the Urupa for the Spencer family.
This probably should have been a clue to turn back, but onwards I went, a track of sorts. No bush bashing, but probably a track that was the locals are wanting to be reclaimed by the forest.
Continuing on my journey, on the point was a seat with a view, I am getting closer to the elusive cache, and now I rejoin the path, that I probably should have been walking on in the first place?
So arrive near GZ, what now? so with a bit of geo sense (sometimes I have it, and other times I wonder?) thankfully this cache wanted to be found, and after retrieving it from a loving embrace, I was able to sign the log.
My return journey was not the way I came, but to continue around the top edge, and not knowing how it would end, I was happy to see that I was taken back to where I started. A much easier approach to the cache. So I should have take the straight/left side - it just depends on where you were standing
Thanks for the hide and the adventure Eruptn, loving your hide today

Four years ago I bush bashed to this cache. The “new” track makes it much easier. Thanks to those involved!!! Cache in great condition.
I'm sure I took the hardest route possible to get to the cache. Was worth the scratches. My partner's surname is Spencer. Will be looking to see if he's related! Have taken 2 TBs and left 2. Tuis and wood pigeon around today. Tftc
Spent the day at Lake Tarawera with family and friends jetsking and biscuiting. After some swimming it was time for a walk and a few caches. Had to leave my brother with my 18 month old for a few minutes as the pushchair was not going up this track. Once at GZ the cache was quickly found once i re-read the hint and realised it was off trail a little bit. A lovely spot here. Log signed and a couple of TBs dropped off for the next lucky cacher. All good here, TFTC!
A new string of Geocaches spurred this visit so it's time for a tiki-tour. I contacted my mid week caching partner Mc Jandals and proposed a nice little clean up of the area. We had quite the adventure caching from dawn and finding some really beautiful spots. I managed to walk away with 28 caches and my highlights were the views out towards Mt Tarawera and of course... the company
We weren't immediately sure which way to go from the last cache so we bush bashed a little until we hit a track. Then we really were treated as I was not expecting to come upon a Mausoleum! Really neat especially considering it was a total surprise with no prior signage. A neat historical spot but it time now to find this cache. There's clearly been a lot of work in the area no doubt in preparation for Summer but fortunately this cache is safe and sound. Cheers Eruptn - a really neat area - TFTC

On a trip with Philip after seeing these new caches out. A spur of the moment plan was hatched and here we are. II am logging using the Cachly app template so please excuse generic logging along the way. It’s just my way of keeping track, but I do genuinely thank each and every one of you cache owners for taking the time and energy to place these caches. Many Thanks for bringing us back here. Cheers
We were staying nearby for the weekend and headed out on a morning walk to pick up this cache.
Such a lovely peaceful place and a great view from GZ. Thanks Eruptn for bringing us here.

Found it!! Walked this track so many times and always forget to stop by! Cache is still in good nick and that view...can’t beat it. Yesterday Baby Dillnutz and Mama Dillnutz introduced Gran to caching. Today with went with Grandma! The grandmothers will be joining us on further adventures!
In Rotorua with Merlot58 for Easter. We are so glad to have found this magical spot thanks to geocaching. Stunning walk to gz with so many tuis along the trail.
In Rotorua for Easter with Jag50 with the aim to put a smiley face on as many caches as we can. Lots of birdlife on the walk though here today. Quick find of the cache

Nice day & great view for Hermie who loves mountains. Feel a bit guilty forgetting Hermie so long & not setting him on his way...but keen to follow what he gets up to.
Lots of bush waking, maybe we went the little my way, but lovely walk if not a little slippery! TFTC
After a bit of scrambling through bush by going the wrong way and trying to follow the not so clear track, cache was an easy find as per hint. TFTC
I nice meander through the bush. Was a fine day so pleasant finding our way along what is probably the worn path. Found the Urupa, bush travel a bit more difficult after that to the cache site. Found easy enough and took an easier route back to Urupa then back to car. Wonderful cache.
Left this one a bit late in the day and if I didn't have searchDog and searchPartner helping me I would have given up in the failing light.
We navigated fairly easily to the memorial point, but found it very overgrown from there to GZ.
Once there it was a quick find using the hint even though it was now getting dark.
Recommend upgrading the terrain rating to 4... although in daylight it may be more of a 3.
Thanks for the Adventure and TFTC. TNLNSL

It was more of a DNA (Did Not Attempt) as the bush was very wet from last night's rain and not finding any sort of track I decided I wasn't going to bush bash to the GZ.
Today it was up early so I had done the job before we went to Prague. We had made it clear that we were going to gig and get many countries. Not on a day but total on the trip. There were many nice places we watched and so different even though they are so close to changing. It was a long way to drive on this trip and almost all I drove. It was just over 3050 km as we relocated ourselves in 4 days.
Then there was day 2 on the trip before we got to the hotel and we got with us maze before we left. It was fine so we let go and queue for it. Today we should have 13 variants with lab caches. We managed to get it. Thank you to all coer that it was possible.
NORG = TeamBernås, BenderBones, Ayorama, Vadtvedt, Titi89, A9taL, Impala63, Ulva2004

We started on Friday by moving here. The time had passed on Saturday so we took the maze before we went to bed. We saw that we could get 13 variants on Saturday 12+ lab. Then it was right to the hotel and some sleep. It got up early and it was like taking someone on my way to Giga. It was nice that there were not so many here. Just take care so we could find lab caches in the area here. We left for an hour here so proceeded to collect the other variants and we got it. It resulted in a late night.

Lot of bush crashing to get here, not sure if we found the easiest path. Took geocoin, will find a new travelling patch for it to rest next
An interesting historical detour and an enjoyable walk. More like an English wood than NZ bush. Great view. FP and dropped a TB. TFTC.
An interesting walk to this cache - not really a path, more like just a general direction to gz. Manage to stumble across the Reverend and family on the way there. TFTC and rewarding view.
This is sure a special place ....parked at the boat shed area and wondered of into the bush following the track along the lake edge ....soon the track turned into open bush ....so it was GPS and the orange trap markers helped ....after a short period I soon had located the cache in good condition nicely tucked away and some natural camo doing a good job ...this was a great adventure ....thanks Eruptn for the great cache and placement in this awesome place
Staying here in a beautiful house with a wedding party. I "nipped" out to get this cahce in between organised gatherings. Headed into the bush and followed GPS. Soon located the cache - interesting to see it is not found very often. Great spot to venture too. Now..... how to get back out as there didn't seem to be a track. Followed orange trap marker tapes and after worrying about time, got out and back to the venue with minutes to spare. Loved this little adventure. Thanks Eruptn for the placement.
Another find with livee_nz after volunteering for track clearing for Tarawera ultramarathon. Followed GPS which took us to the cache (not following any path, but easy enough to get there). Found quickly once we got to GZ. TFTC
After trail clearing for Tarawera Ultra Marathon, georunnermatt and I checked if there were any caches near where we left the car. Luckily there was and we beelined it for the cache. A quick find at GZ and a nice view to boot. Also checked out the mausoleum in the bush too tftc
When Cats&Dragons and HKCB suggested a day out in Rotorua collecting some caches perhaps I should have looked harder at just how many higher terrain caches we were heading for. I was a little tired after a whole lot of walking, I was very out of practise! A nice early start, leaving Hamilton at 4.30am meant we could make the most of the day. All in all a great day out exploring Rotorua and seeing some great sights. Thanks to all the cache owners for their placements which allowed us to have a fun day out! All logs were signed as "HIC" to save room
A nice spot with lots of boating muggles around. Hopefully they didn't see us slip off into the bushes. We straightlined it to the cache which was fairly pleasant after this mornings walk. A nice hidden little spot with some great lake views. Thanks for bringing us here

This is to be a mighty day in the company of HKCB & 11HPG11 as we headed over from Hamilton to clean out a few caches (thirty plus) and get in a real good walk as the start of the new season takes hold. We all admit that we have all been far too quiet over the winter months, so this was a bit of a chance to make up for that. Setting out from Hamilton at 4.30am getting back at 5pm, covering approx 32km of walking tracks all in an effort to find plastic boxes hidden in the bush.
As always the day was full of laughs, long drags up hills and very weary legs at the end of it, what more could one wish for but the company of good mates, and I had that in spades. Thanks to all the cachers who took the time to place (and maintain) these caches for us to enjoy.
This was the twenty fourth of the day as we made our way around the top of the lake before heading back down to the Redwood Forest and lots of walking. Having completed what we had planned on this side of the Redwoods we shot out here so as to grab this one and a couple of the nearby earthcaches that the others had not collected previously. Great walk in and even easier walk back out. Cache in great condition.
Thanks for the cache, Thanks for the placement

Teamed up with Cats&Dragons and 11HPG11 to focus on some of higher difficulty and terrain caches in and around Rotorua, and anything else that we were going past. The day started well before the sun was up as we left Hamilton at 4.30am, and the last cache being located a little after 3pm as we all needed to be back home at a reasonable time. The day was hugely successful with all caches planned for the day being found, and as a bonus the quality of caches were really high! So a big thanks to all the CO's for the great placements. The logs were all signed with "H1C".
A few people playing with their boats today as we parked up the car. Found the begin of a track but after 100m or so we thought straight-lining it to the cache would be the best option. Turn's out it wasn't to difficult to get there either. Great view of the lake from GZ as we signed the log book. Thanks for the great hide.

Found during nice 12 hours, 59 km long walk from Redwoods to the lake Okareka, lake Tarawera and the Tarawera trail, visiting the Hot water beach camp site and walk the trail back. Finishing again in Redwoods.
No path to the cache, so it was little difficult to find the right way to the cache.

First day of the holidays, so we have to get out and explore. Awesome to find out there is a cache so close to our holiday house! We had a great time making our own path - the gps looked like a spider had crawled all over it at the end! Thanks for the cache is such a fantastic location. Found with Beanadventures and Geokitten007
We arrived from Wellington yesterday, but too late to go caching. So first thing this morning mum Beanadventures and brother AdventureBear007 and I got to explore and find this one. It took a while with lots of trees to go under, round and through. TFTC.
We arrived yesterday from Wellington, but too late in the day to get out caching. So we attacked this at 8am before the rest of the house woke up. We took a very long scenic route to get to GZ, but we had great fun doing it. Lots of trees to go through, under, over and up. Thanks for placing this cache in such a beautiful spot.
I was out with the three year old and 8 year old today and we had three caches on the list to do I decided this would be the last as it looked harder. So after we got the first two we made our way to the car park and into the bush the three year old wasn't to happy but we managed to get her to walk the whole way to GZ but it did take us a long time once at GZ the 8 year old made a quick find signed the log then it was back to the car I decided I would carry little miss three year old back down to the car so it was much quicker on the way back.

Quite a challenge for us today. Were expecting to follow a trail, so it threw us off a bit and we tried from other side. Returning to original point, it was eventually located. Seemed in the open, but was consistent with hint. Tftc!
Thanks for great coordinates and an adventurous track. It was harder to get here than finding the actual cache. Found together with HiimK! Greetings from Sweden
#373. Really pleased to log this find and FTSNL. We came out here on 30 Dec and spent ages trying to find the original cache. We are back in Rotorua for 2 days heading south so great that the cache has been replaced in the past 2 weeks. This time it was a fairly quick find. Although we thought we were going to be thrawted by the weather as just before we arrived a torrential downpour occurred. Our first rain in nearly two weeks. But the rain soon eased, so off we went. We were pretty familiar with the Point by now. I was surprised the cache was so close to original site we searched. It isn't 83m away, more like 10-15m. I put the old numbers you listed into Google maps and it puts them on the beach out at end of point. Anyhow thanks so much for the replacement cache and its first find since April 2013. Gets a favourite from us. TFTC

This cache appears to be in need of owner intervention. I'm temporarily disabling it, to give you, the owner an opportunity to check on the cache, and take whatever action is necessary. Please respond to this situation in a timely manner (i.e., within 30 days) to prevent the cache from being archived for non-responsiveness.
We were having a picnic and swim at nearby reserves so thought we would pick this one up on the way home. Only after reaching the GZ did I read the previous logs and realised we may have bitten off more than we can chew. The GPS showed we had got to GZ but a nasty thicket of vines didn't look very promising. Managed to crawl under these and check around a lot of fallen logs while the family covered the easier open ground close by. Hard to imagine its been muggled but without a slasher to clear the undergrowth this one might morph into a virtual cache. Enjoyed the bush walk. Suggest future visitors steer east from boatsheds to avoid the urupa (burial) site.
Didn't use the hint for the entrance point, and then GPS was having a bit of a muddle. Eventually found gz after lots of bushwacking, but no luck with the cache.
No track and a lot of bush bashing and we got to within 3 m but no cache. Nearly got lost on our way back and were trying to follow the GPS track backwards. Then we saw the memorial hidden in the bush, which we had found earlier and found our way back to the car easily from there. Pity we didn't find the cache after all our effort. Had a great time anyway.
This was our 2nd time out here and had a 10 minute walk out as we were looking all over for around 30 minutes before we decided to give up. But don't worry we will be back
Spent about 45 minutes here with four eager cachers looking, but no joy for us. Read the older logs, tried a few variations of the coordinates and then decided just to say 'where would we put it?'. But none of the usual tricks worked, so will reserve this one for a visit next summer. Lovely spot though!
Awesome....Found it with no problem. Just head towards the lake....Great little bush bash in the rain tonight....Thanks soo much for this one....Loved it!
It was 1 pm and we were heading to Wingspan for the 2 pm falconry demo (which was awesome!) so had limited time for this one. Parked over by the park and headed down the small track to the boat ramp, across the car park and then rejoined a promising looking path into the trees that headed out towards the end of the point... and then just vanished. 150m of bush bashing with two young kids appeared to be the only option at that stage so sadly time had run out. Caught a glimpse of what I now know is the mausoleum in the trees, before turning back. Really nice area though so we'll have to leave this one on the to do list.
I suspect we took the unconventional route for this one. Required a considerable amount of bush bashing with no discernable path. Still, we didn't get lost and after a prolonged search of the GZ we finally discovered the cache under some rather lush comoflage. (had been hoping to find a more straight forward route out, but alas it was not to be.)
Difficult find view quite overgrown and hint not clearly obvious. Very pleased to locate this cache. Maybe needs some maintenance of the area.
Found orginally as part of phasevisitor team, now created own account, re-logging as yorkshirekiwi83.
Came down from Auckland and spent a nice weekend caching in Rotorua. Spent a lovely afternoon with spiderhouse on their boat, cruising around the lake picking up a few caches. After getting back to the boat ramp we headed off to locate this cache, meeting Beauty and the Beast on the way, who gave us some helpful pointers and co-ordinates, which made for a quick find at GZ. TFTC!

Found during our weekend getaway to Rotorua. T4TC. Great history and we enjoyed the walk in the forest. Beautiful view from GZ. We used 3 GPSrs to triangulate the final and got S 38° 11.946, E 176° 23.762. On the way back we actually made point to return through the extra waypoint for a further history lesson. Thanks.

Found our way to Clue One but decided not to venture further as a bit too tapu for Manu & Big Ted - but we were amazed to find the Couple in such an ambiguous place given what we have learnt of their significance and local history during our holiday here. Enjoyed the hunt
What an adventure walking through these woods. Certainly after the visit we had of the Buried Village which also briefly mentions the family and their mission work. It took us sometime to find the cache, but just before sunset we were able to log it. We were rewarded with a beautiful sky. The most difficult part of the cache was finding back our car TFTC!
Found it this time - took Richard with me and he walked straight to it - GZ was ok and for a sec only 1m out - Should have read the text about good view - you certainly get a good one from the cache hiding spot - very pretty and interesting spot TFTC

What an interesting area - did not have any luck today - too many logs to choose from - I will be back
Found the cache at the end of the point. Actually had to scramble through the bush in the absence of a clear path. This is an eerie place, especially with the Spencer Crypt nearby. There appears to be some work in the bush around the cache, so I hope it will be safe. TFTC.
