I have looked for this guy on a previous visit to Ballarat but after an extensive search could not find anything.
The cache owner has not checked into geocaching.com since May 2012 and when you see the number of DNF's on this cache I really think it is time for either the owner to check out his or her cache or it be archived due to a lack of owner maintenance.
I have over a hundred caches hidden out there and I know that it is a lot of effort to keep them all in good condition but in this case I think the reviewers should act and sort this one out one way or the other.

Found with Simmo631- hid as close to co-ords as possible. Great find if it wasn't for muggles.

Challenging approach to GZ from the west on a bitterly cold wet winter day with a very adventurous 5yo geokid. Location resembles Yoda's swamp, but with shopping trolleys in place of X-wing fighters. Spent an hour or so climbing and slipping and investigating any likely hide, near GPS location or elsewhere in the swampy gully. I have to agree with the other recent logs - the cache seems to have been muggled. Found a few golfballs (?!) instead so not a wasted mission. Thanks for a great excuse to get out here climbing cliffs and getting muddy.

I spend at least 3/4 of an hour searching without success.
Crazy mountain bike tracks everywhere here and large collection of shopping trolleys at the bottom of the gully.
Unfortunately we didn't bring torches and didn't get to explore the tunnels nearby. we'll know better next time.
Thanks for bringing us here even with a DNF

DNF. The terrain in the area is very unsafe now, I went right to where the hint and my GPS indicated, only to have the ground give way beneath me. Luckily I caught some of the vegetation before I could fall far, unluckily it was gorse.
I'm not sure if this cache is really here,
And the smilies don't even matter !
Now I've climbed to the top with fear,
Then it's all just a bunch of matter
'Cause if the cache aint really there
Then I don't wanna be either [:o]
I wanna be next to you,
Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold
With a song in me head I had a funtastic, mountain goat, time in the gully for over an hour
But watch out people, this is a dangerous area with unstable rocks and trees scattered around.
No caches to be found today though !!

Same as previous logs. Tracked it for a couple of hours, after clambering around, we decided to leave for more younger and adventurous cachers. Lovely spot though, so thanks for bringing us here.
Searched for cache for about 2.5 hours today in two separate trips and undertook research in between times.
Located the scene from the hint and am reasonably confident that I was searching in the right area.
I suspect the cache has been muggled as per previous log "looks like some people have been working around here as they had left a small and large rock smashing hammers". A lot of rock has been pulled down and is laying all over the ground.

We were really looking forward to this cache, but should have left some more time for searching. After 30 minutes of looking we had to get to an appointment. Bugger. A neat area and it looks like some people have been working around here as they had left a small and large rock smashing hammers. We'll be back!
Awesome terrain to view and traverse. Erie having pine cones dropping around you. Clever hide location and container. Narley Bike tracks - Double fav from me!
Spectacular location enjoyed the adventure even thou a DNF - GPSr pointer had me in the blackberries. Sustained an injury which wrapped up the adventure.

Oh so frustrating! DNF Started climbing down from the lookout and then thought, no, too far to climb up again, we'll tackle from other side. Mmmm Long climb to top and gps told me it was 9m over cliff, oh no, so down we struggled, definately deserves the terrain rating! Just knew it had to be there somewhere but Geo hubby and I could not find it. So frustrating. Back to SA now so will have to leave it til another day.
Wow what an adventure to get to this cache. A beautiful walk/climb through the forest to this cache and an awesome container to top it off. I love these types of caches. Had a ball on this cool still morning in Ballarat. TFTC. Fav point given.
Found on a normal Ballarat day for this time of year after doing a owners maintenance on 1 of my neare by caches and when I got to the cache I had a welcoming party of a Brown Snake that tryed to bite me so after he went away I sighed the log and placed it back.

Found it! Took a while but we got there. We climbed past it a few times but eventually got it. Great hide!
Well this was a bit uinfortunate.
The wet clay made the whole thing very treacherous, and when I made it to the cache vicinity, the 12m limit put me right on the edge of a very dangerous cliff. I looked around at the top and found a few hides matching the hint but a further away than 12m, then managed to slip and slide down the greasy cliff a bit to about the 8m mark but still didn't manage to find it.
Thanks for nringing me here muitah, maybe I'll be back one day.

Lucky it was a dry day when we looked for this. Started drizzling the next day and would not have been good. TFTC
Wow this cache was so much fun. hadn't been down here since i was a child. Thought we would be smart and scale up the hill on the return home. Not a good idea!! We got stuck for 20 mins couldn't go any higher and couldn't go down.Once we stopped laughing we slowing made our way out. Note to self we are not in our 20's anymore!! Thanks for a callengeing cache
Wow!!! Awesome spot .... But a very bad idea of mine to attempt in thongs!! Good footwear would make this a bit easier love the cache t-frangipani keyring L- two cars TFTC
Since I had to head to Ballarat for a few messages, I thought I would check the area out for any Terrain/Difficulty combinations I hadn't logged yet. Yay I found one! I dragged my sister along with me to this one. She has accompanied me on a couple of caches before, but nothing like this one. Luckily we were headed to the Lake Goldsmith Steam Rally after this, so we had the sensible shoes on, but it was still an adventure. Every attribute on this cache is well earned and should be paid attention to. I am glad we made the journey and we certainly earned this matrix grid 'tick'. Thanks for the cache muitah.

Day 3 and final day of our Ballarat Smackdown weekend with DazRascal, Blacklegend, Quasar3671 & Trailrunning which seen us collecting a great range of caches over 3 days, and this was one of them.
An interesting location here, with some rugged terrain to get to the cache. The geokids had a good time nearby tossing some rocks around.
Cache was located after a bit of a climb and a few scratches.
Many thanks for sharing this location with us. TNLN SL
Cheers muitah.

One of 184 cache finds during our "Ballarat Smackdown" weekend of caching on the 23rd to 25th. There were 13 of us including Blacklegend and three of his kids, Trailrunning, Haveanez and their two boys, Dazrascal and myself amd my two boys Tyler and Cooper. We'd spent a few weeks planning the trip, with every Ballarat Puzzle solved in the area, cache lists and road and route maps all ready to go. We stayed in the Miners Retreat Motel for the two nights and the accomodation and facilities were great. Our goal was simple - find as many caches as possible in the time we were here !
We found a great variety of caches and hides during the three days, which also involved a bit of walking and some 4WD fun as well in the state forests north of Ballarat. The weather was quite cold of the Friday and Saturday morning but eventually cleared to nice sunny weather Saturday arvo and Sunday. We all had a great time, especially the kids who did really well to keep up with the pace we were moving.
Our third day of caching and it was another big day ahead of us before splitting up early in the afternoon. With some four wheel driving, some essential caches to collect and getting 'lost' in the bush and some tricky caches found, the day turned out to be quite an adventure. With cars loaded with the gear and kids, we checked out of the accommodation and hit the road.
We drove up from a Puzzling Christmas and stopped at the top of the huge hole in the ground. Dazrascal and I headed down to find the cache while the rest watched the kids and our progress from above. We made our way down into the 'quarry' and back up to GZ where we found the cache. Loved the hide and the challenge to get to it, a favourite for me. TFTC.

One of 182 caches I personally found during our "Ballarat Smackdown" trip. The trip included teams Quasar3671, Trailrunning, Haveanez, Dazrascal and myself. Caches included around 30 mystery caches, a few earth caches, lots of trads and multis and both day and night caching. Some 4WD action was encountered as well, which was great. All puzzles within 60kms were solved.
I took three of my kids, Jasmine 7yo, James and Jemma 5yo twins, traveling from Tocumwal. The trip covered 3 days and two nights, staying in Ballarat. Quasar3671 took his two boys as did Haveanez. One of the best caching trips I have been on, and certainly lots and lots of finds, almost clearing out the main Ballarat area. Home base was the Miners Retreat motel, which was quite pleasant and quiet.
This was a find on our Sunday day run, which was only a half day run. Bit of a differnt location, and a nice camo colour for the cache. Nice. TFTC.

We were up to cache 132 at the conclusion of the Saturday of the “Ballarat Cache Smackdown”. Having arrived here on Friday night we had gone hard all weekend. It didn’t stop last night with a few juices being drunk before going to bed. The after effects of this were that we are all a little slow in starting up today. Having packed the cars and checking out of our home base we started our Sunday run with a few caches we missed the night before (the kids really did need to go to bed). The highlight of my morning was straining my left calf muscle running up a 4WD track. That sort of slowed me down for the rest of the day. We had a few must do caches today before splitting up and heading home. This was one of them. Find #143 for the “Smackdown” weekend. We drove close to GZ on this one and walked in. Thanks.

Suscoe and sister made the journey to GZ early this afternoon.
Had been looking forward to this challenge for quite a while now and we were not disappointed.

A big thank you to muitah for this cache.

Hard territory, but fun find. Good challenge for 6yo and 9yo. Prickles!
Look up-ish when you get close.

Wow, this was an awesome hunt. Found by Landog (10) and Geofreak (9). After 2 hours, persistence finally paid off after looking for the cache in all the wrong places, as the GPS kept pointing me to the other side of the ravine. My tips are:
1. You don't need to go into any mine shafts or tunnels.
2. You don't need to move through spiky bushes.
3. You don't need to climb up or down sheer or slippery slopes to get to GZ - there's an easier way if you keep looking.
4. From the Black Hill lookout car park, walk until the bitumen ends, then follow the GPS from there, down, down, down and into the dark ravine where you'll see a trolley. Resist the urge to flank the cache and take it from the south (where the mine shaft is - the cache is not close to the mine shaft or tunnel).
5. The cache is not buried or hidden underneath anything.
6. Only attempt this in dry conditions!
Have fun and be safe.
TFTH. A favourite for sure.

Forgot to log this, almost did it again. A great cache to do again however. This would have to be in ny top 3 favorute finds so far! As I approached gz i found myself at the top of a very large cliff and the gps said keep goin just another 2 metres! 'Challenge Accepted' I love more extreme caches. TFTC
This has to be the best area for a cache ive seen to date! Awesome mine shafts to checkout in the area! Tftc
We found the old mine shafts nearby, lots of fun to explore if u dare. We ventured in about 30m
Well I have discovered that the gorse in Ballarat is as prickly as the gorse in the UK. Nicely camo'd, blends in well despite being basically in view. TFTC
great spot really enjoyed the hard slippery climb down and up, if you what to stay clean do this one in summer as we did it on a rainy day but still fun... cheers
Landau351 found this one today. I didn't.
I'm stocky and a bit top heavy, and I know my limitations. And this was it. I stayed at the top looking after his hat, while we went down there to GZ. I heard the story of his adventure, and glad I didn't attempt.
Even though I didn't find it I am still going to make it a favourite, just for bringing me to this amazing place.
I was a bit freaked out by two small girls, aged about 8, dressing in pretty summer dresses who ran past me as I was waiting. Weird that.

09/10/2011 14:49 Off to Creswick/Ballarat for an awesome hard-core caching weekend with my good mate iamapom (Carl). This cache was epic. Parked up top in the area that is sinking. Looked about and Carl thought there can't be access here so we drove around to the end of Napier street. He didn't think that was right either so we went back to the allowed parking area and started walking into the gully. It started off as an easy walk till we arrived at hard descent. We walked around the edge hoping to find a simple way in but eventually returned to the hard spot where Carl waited while I went down. This turned out to be the simple part of the journey as a climbed into the bowl near GZ. The GPS said up so up I went and eventually found myself at least 4m above a shear drop, balancing on tiny ledges and hanging on to the flora to make the grab of this well cammoed container. It is painted very well and blends in beautifully. I haven't seen one of these before. A great experience and cache well worth the effort. Wow that was hard terrain. TFTC muitah TNLN SL
Wow... It was found eventually (very good camo) I managed to crawl through the gorse bushed twice before I stood back and found it, not before covering some terrain 5 areas and risking my life a couple of times. Can I suggest that if you're crawling through gorse then you are too committed.
Well what a challenge today! I had to drop off a TB that is associated with black- yours was it. At first I thought the terrain was not too bad until I reached GZ.
In my wisdom I slid down on my rear end, I crawled on all fours as well as knees. I rolled/hung under a fallen pine tree and was prickled by gorse bush. In this process I managed to circumnavigated the cache. But all was not lost I could see it so close at hand.
It took nearly as long to open and close the container as it took to reach it - not really. It was all secured and replaced back in its hidey hole.
Great rock formations to be seen here enjoyed the play of colours on them. Then headed off. Encountered some BMX riders doing there own thing.
I reached the road but my car was no where to be seen. Fortunately my tracks were on my GPS and was able to find it by back tracking. (I had forgotten to mark the spot when I left.) The cache wasn't too far away was it? I just took a different route back! Well worth a favourite.

thank for show me that place....butttt i try to climb its slip like clay i have to crawl on the way ....very slip....nice colour pink and purple clay
What a fantastic area this is! The different colours in the rocks along the way are truly amazing, and the terrain is certainly challenging. Made my way carefully through the valley and then found the well camouflaged cache. Thanks for the adventure and the cache.
this one just went to show how unfit me and robeert are. But we both loved this one so much next time we wont do it on such a bad day

Hi, does anyone know a caching team by the name of muitah? We are wanting to contact them re; maintenance of their cache GCT9EG and also to post them the trophy they won at GC2JXOR "2010 Ballarat Geocaching Awards" and have not been able to contact them. Cheers Sarah
#17 of 22 for geo day
I was not expecting to find the cache today but we decided to go for it. we made it to the canyon like thing and geodad decided that he would go no more. It was rainy and windy and I did not have very good shoes but being young really did help the climb to GZ. Once at GZ I looked around for a while. Thats when Geodad yelled out from the other side that maybe I should check over there. Thats when the cache revealed itself, the camo really does blend in. Being short made the final reach for the cache abit of a hard one. But the cache was finally plucked from its hiding spot. Thank you to muitah for an interesting spot for the cache

Found this one today. I parked a lot closer at the Brown Hill lookout. There are steps leading down so I recommend this way. The cache was spotted about 9 meters away so it was an easy find. However as warned the ground is slipperly and you need decent boots and quiet a climb. TFTC
At first I planned just to go to the Black hill and assess the difficulty of this cache because I hadn't seen the added pictures, there was wet around and I hadn't said anyone where I was going. When I got there from not-recommended side I thought - hey, it's not that difficult, let's have a little try. And I tried . Thorns made my way down much more difficult than the slippery foundation beneath my feet. After some 20 minutes I found the cache in a place which seemed quite appropriate for the GC. I was very happy, of course . Went back using the "easy way" avoiding those stabbing bushes.
I wouldn't recommend going there from the difficult side and while the ground is wet. Although it's possible to do it. Even alone .
Don't wear your best clothes cause they will become a bit golden .
TFTC! And great container, too.

A difficult trek, that was subjected to water, so will need to try again on our next visit, but great views of the rocks.

Love this little hike, never would have been here if it wasn't for GC. Nice climb down and watch the fall!
went out today didnt find it but going to go have another look some time very soon love the area found a mine shaft while out and about
One of the best caches I've done in Ballarat, and a good one to end the day on. Parked in the carpark, tried to spot the shifty guys walking into the bushes and pretty sure I saw one doing just that. Anyway, made my way down, then followed the GPS even further down, once I was at the very bottom next to the big pool I started to get worried that I'd have to wade through the pool to GZ
I found a way round and up to the right which lead me just next to GZ, I climbed around and up to above the cache spot without needing to but no harm in that, I had the entire place to myself and any embarrassing falls would go unnoticed. Really happy this didn't take 2-3 hours like it did for some, my GPS was working really well and lead me right to the cache. I can see how you could be mislead around here going just a few metres in the wrong direction.

A quick visit to Ballarat for a commitment and we find we have a bit of spare time.
We needed a 3.5/4 for our All Rounder Cacher series, so thought this would be a good one to do. We investigated a couple of access routes and (as usual) H-Phetlern proved to be correct. A fascinating area of the Ballarat Goldfields and one that has remained unknown to us until now. A unique type of cache container as well – where do you get them? Collected Gorilla in the Garden TB.

I saw the terrain rating for this one and thought I must give it a go. I parked at the lookout and made my way down from there. I must admit, although I did enjoy the area, it seems it has been left to slowly deteriorate over time which was disappointing. The closed off car park is full of burnout marks and broken glass, the walkway down has become a bit rickety and overgrown and there is rubbish left around everywhere. Looks more like an area for young hooligans to hang out and get drunk instead of an area of local history
I found the terrain challenging and the colors of the rocks on the way down is amazing. Much enjoyed the trek down and back up and the co ords were spot on.
Decided to have lunch back at the car, and the longer I stayed the more I didn't want to be there. Within 15 minutes I would say at least 5 cars had pulled up, with the sole occupant being middle aged male, and separately they ALL went in the same general direction behind the same patch of scrub. It seems to be the local meeting point for men who like other men. It was enough for me to leave so it was off to the next cache.
TNLN, Cheers.

Found with 3up, Squalid and The Empire while in town for the Event Cache - 10 Years! Ballarat, Australia .should have put the mountain goat boots on but we all approached from different directions so there is more than 1 way to scale a mountain a great hide - thanks muitah
This was a pretty cool spot and a really cool hide. We also had a bit of a look around at the diggings. Thanks for the cache.

5/32 on my way to the 10 Years! Ballarat Event, with tackle_head, 3up and squalid. tackle_head and squalid went one way, 3up and I went another, we ended up in the same place after some serious moutaingoating (<- I like this new word I have created!) around. This is a really cool place and a tough cache to find, 3up made the find as he has been here looking before. Thanks for bringing us all here - our hearts were racing in Ballarat now!

Find # 1146 @ 07:45 and the 5th of 30 finds for the day on the way to the Ballarat 10 year celebration event with tackle_head, squalid and The Empire.
Finally. Attempted this on two seperate occasions very late in the day but fading light cut short both searches as I did not want to be navigating the terrain in the dark. I really enjoy this cache and was gald to not only re-visit but actually find it. Thanks to muitah for the great cache. Nice heart starter for the morning. TNLNSL

Freeking AWESOOOOOOME. We loved the trek to this cache in perfect Ballarat weather, a mild 15 degrees. The colors in the rock are so rich and awesome. Found on first attempt after a casual walk down to the cache. We would love to see the changes in the colours of the landscape and rock when it is raining. TFTC.
This one wins a few awards from me: Most Physically Demanding and Most Potential Danger! I approached this from the wrong side wearing thongs and shorts which made it extra fun and challenging. But the scenery was incredible, and finally stumbling across the cache was very satisfying, I loved it. Thank you for this excellent experience.

The amazing colours have turned the scars of gold mining into an awesome place.
Have been to the Lookout heaps of times, but never down there! Much easier coming out than going in

Found it at 1820H - after 2 failed tries back on 29 & 30 DEC 2009! Well worth the effort. I was less than 1m from it before I saw it! Enjoyed the challenge of terrain too. I introduced another Orienteer - DYNA - to Geocaching with this one! He provided the new Log Book & I left a Black & a Gold pencil.
Enormous fun looking for this cache. Mountain man revealed himself and was leaping up and down the gully with abandon. Mountain girl spotted it the location. But Mountain man climbed to the location to retrieve. Left pink superball. T4TC
This was a fun find. It took us two attempts to find it. Great hiding!!! Took war man and left a bit of Christmas cheer with a Christmas gel.

Took a while to find as the tree cover caused a bit of a problem.

Visited the cache today to retrieve the "Team Gordon" TB which I dropped off in September 2008 but which had not been logged since. Unfortunately, its bag and accompanying paperwork from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department were still there but the Car and Tag were gone. I can't imagine this cache being muggled but, I guess stranger things have happened.
Bit of a shame really after a journey of some 30324.6 kms.

Loved the cache -> my first one! Couldn't find it the first time, but went back and found it, we were pumped!!
Tried for this one today while doing my 1st caching trip to Ballarat. Pity the Cache wasn't a shopping trolley. LoLz
Really enjoyed this lttle trek into the gully. Fantastic camo on the cache and a great hide. Thanks for showing me this beaut spot, & for the cache. TNLNSL
WOW, what to say!
My 100th Cache, and what a cache it was.
With my girlfriend by my side, motorbike people hurling around nearby, the challenge of not only doing this wildlife walk to the cache but doing it in flip flops, wow, what an experience.
Took the Geocoin and plan on moving it with great respect that it came from my 100th cache.

This is a great cache in a fantastic location. Loved the colours in the rocks and the walk in. They had done a bit of clearing on the path so a nice walk. Didn't need old clothes.

We parked at the published co-ords and after a nice stroll down the stairs and past the trolley grave yard we seemed to go around in circles until we found ourselves close to GZ. Once we the GPS gave a decent reading and we found GZ we soon had the cache in hand. TNLNSL. Thanks for a great cache!!!
What a great cache!!! One has to wonder how the trolleys got down here?? The only disappointment with this cache is that it is find 996, not 1000.
No sign of a TB in the cache.

This is an epic cache and the Ballarat cache that I have enjoyed the most. A nice hide. It is about time that the trolly boys from Coles/Woolies did a round up. There are now 4 trollies parked up in the trolly park. TNLN. Thanks for the cache. Amazingly, I didn't slip over and I arrived back at the lookout only a little sweaty. Thanks for the cache.
The first outlook was a bit daunting as the gradual hill that we drove up, suddenly plunged down into a steep pit. We elected to fortify ourselves with lunch first.
With stuffed tummys we staggered up the hill, only to find a nice staircase to take us down. Past multicoulored rocks, we soon found ourselves in a supermarket, well, there were two trollies here.
The GPS lead us just a little way back up the hill, to an easy find. Getting it back covered up was another thing. The stones kept rolling down! Eventually we had enough to complete the hide, and we walked back out.
Nice spot for a cache.
Thanks, Robmc.

We stopped here to partake of lunch that the Good Lady Wife had prepared earlier. (ie thrown a loaf of bread and some fillings in the esky). Yours truly had to stick the ingrediants together. Lifes crook sometimes!
Anyway we are here for caching and this one's a beauty. A nice spot of excercise and some magnificent colours to see in the rocks. No trouble finding the cache although I was a misslead a little by a previous finders log which kind of diverted my attention to another possible hiding spot. Robmc found it while I was thus diverted. Had some trouble rehiding said cache as erosion has done a bit of a job on the hiding spot but after a while and with very yellow hands we soon sorted it out. Took a different route back to the car which sort of completed the adventure.
Thanks indeed. I'd read about this one before and am glad to have now found it.

Had this one on the hit list for a while and decided today's the day, regardless of the weather forecast. What a blot on the landscape this place is! At least now I know where the old shopping trolleys go to die. And yet, what exquisitly beautiful and subtle colours in the rock faces. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this cache. The GPS pointed me straight at the spot. I looked at it from a few metres away and thought, "Nah! It wouldn't be there." and proceeded to ferret around for another 20 minutes, every now and then, looking back at the spot. Eventually, it started to rain and I was thinking I'd have to come back to this one in drier times but, before I left, I just had to have a look at that spot, just to prove to myself that that wasn't it. And, of course, it was. I should have tried to eliminate it earlier. Great hide and well camoflaged. As I started back, the rain began belting down. I arrived back at the car soaking wet and covered with mud but I had a ball. Love that sort of terrain. Did not swap but left a TB 24C0. Many thanks for a most enjoyable cache.

A cache that been on my list for quite a while. Today between rain showers I tackeled the quest, and after covering much more ground than required the cache was found. Know this area much better now.
