I stayed here last night ... watched the sun rise, grabbed a chai latte from the mobile van, went for a wander around with chai latte in hand and nothing but the sounds of wildlife and increasing highway traffic. I headed to GZ for the start of the multi.Well ... I looked and looked ... and could not, for the life of me, find the plaques mentioned in the description.I sent messages to both the owner and the last cacher to log a find ... but (as of today when I write log - November Cool have not heard back from either. So ... not sure if the plaques have been removed / gone missing. I've checked over my photos and I can see a place where they might have been ??? but perhaps I completely overlooked the GZ area and missed them.Hoping one day I'll be passing by again to give it another go. Smile

NOTE: This is a very sophisticated puzzle cache! It can only be solved by using a cypher. Some logs, because of their simplistic description (found, thanks), lead me to doubt their credibility. It is not ethical to claim a cache unless found fair and square.

Today was a very early start with a drive to the airport for a 6 am flight to Cairns and day one of our North Queensland geocaching trip.Snickersallan and I were met at the airport by Grannysmith and Bluewattle. The bags were thrown into the car and we were off for a day of adventure. First off it was up to Kuranda, then across to Mareeba, down to Atherton and Millaa Millaa. It was then over to Innisfail before working our way back to Cairns, to arrive just in time for the night time event. It was nice to see a couple of locals turn up to the event, thank you.Driving on our tour we came across this one and thought why not. after a little seaching we made the find. The log was signed with all four names before it was replaced as found and we continued on. Thanks for the hide and the placement.

Well that was a bit of a challenge for us had to PAF for some advice as all our web decryption didn’t seem to yield an appropriate answer…but we turned out to be close! Thanks Fangsoki for your assistance! We had stayed at the nearby campsite overnight and walked through the memorial to find the appropriate answers…as this is the most accurate way to collect there is another way but your answer would not be correct if you didn’t convert the answers to each letter…you’ll know what we mean if you do this cache well done we love a good multi

Due to the unique DT rating for a multi cache this was a must do while being in the area. I really wanted to do it the day before on the way north, but the insane rain meant it would be a hopeless endeavour. Today the sun smiled again, allowing to collect the numbers, inspect the interesting locations and make the find. The logbook and container are very wet, no surprise with that amount of rain. Thanks for creating and placing.

Took me awhile to solve this one. Had to walk the plaques a couple of times. Then when I eventually had coordinates that looked OK we went to see what we could find. But the coordinates were out over 100metres. I must have done something funny. But it bought me to the correct area so had a search around with the hint and located it.
Thanks for putting together this multi cache

Great Northern escape 2022 Day 45. Cooktown to Atherton travel day. I headed off after packing up in the rain and getting quite wet, but of course as I got a bit out of town it stopped raining. The Black mountain rocks looked very broody in the mist, and I dove straight past Lakeland. A quick stop in Mount Molloy and on past Mareeba. At last as I reached Tolga there was some caching to do. I moved onto Atherton and set up camp in a town van park and went out for a few more in the late afternoon. A longer day than I have had for a bit now.

All I have to say is this is quite complicated. Getting the information went smoothly, but I completely failed after that. A precious finder got me back on track, and I headed of to GZ, or so I thought. No matter what I did on the GPS it did not want to change datum. Fortunately I came across a likely spot not far from the offset to WGS84 and made a find. Quite a relief after all th effort that went into this one.

Thanks for the cache makira

After a day north yesterday, we pulled into this area and parked the car in the late afternoon.
The mosquitoes and midgeees were on the rampage as we made our way around each of the plaques.
With numbers collected, we decided to head home to our temporary campsite in Atherton as it was dusk, and we knew we would be back this way again today.
After working our way through the puzzle, we called on a friend for a little help, as we became stuck at one point.
It turns out that one of our numbers was incorrect. (Thanks for sorting that one for us Smittengranny).

In the end, the coordinates we had were probably not quite right as we found ourselves about 180 m from where we thought we should possibly be.
With that, and looking around, we began a search which led us to the hide very quickly. An obvious location in hindsight and we have added our name to the log.
Thanks for maintaining this old one.

This was certainly a team effort. We thought we had it all worked out and ended up in a rather odd place. Geoturtle37 contacted a PAF and found out we were way off. The PAF gave us a push as to what we should have done and a very rough idea of where we should end up so that we would know if we were correct the next time. We discussed all this with Micaparamedic and set off to our second possibility. As we were driving slowly to find where we should be, the CB came alive as Micaparamedic felt that we had just passed GZ. Another U turn and parked up. This was certainly the right location so we waited for our GPS's and phones to settle and eventually made the find after exfoliating the many cement foundations.(All weeds as it was growing on top of the foundations of old buildings.) We certainly earned this cache and after de-mudding ourselves and getting dry, we were on our way to the next adventure. Thanks for the cache and showing us this history.

30-Apr-22
This was a cache and a half, In the drizzly rain and with the problems we had, we probably wouldn't have persevered except that it was an old cache and I do like to try and find them if I can. A PAF was needed that pointed us in the right direction and worked through our errors. Once we fixed what was needed, we almost drove past GZ and would have had it not been for Micaparamedic that pointed out that we were going past. We have done the weeding here as it doesn't seem to have been done for a long time. We didn't weed where the cache is so that might make it a little obvious for those that follow. Thanks for placing the cache and keeping it going for so long.

Geocaching has taken me on many adventures over the years all over Australia and overseas. It has also introduced me to a brilliant and diverse group of people, many of whom are now close friends.

Today I was lucky enough to be out and about so I targeted this cache.

Multis are usually not my thing, so it wasn't surprising to me to find a lot in my found database that hadn't been logged.

Sorry for the late log, but thanks for adding to the adventure!

Thanks makira (F=182 H=10) for placing this cache and adding to our game.

20/10/21 Find #5092
Today was going to be a bit of a higgledy piggledy day of caching adventures for Fangsoki and I, involving a number of multi caches and other caches we had on our list but just hadn’t had a chance to get to over the past couple of days.
This was the first of the day, and I think we were probably both glad we weren’t doing it in the middle of the day in the 34° temperature that was forecast. Arriving at GZ it did take us a moment to realise where/what we needed to be looking at - we found a nice wall that seemed to fit the bill perfectly. Only it wasn’t that! Obviously the morning coffee really hasn’t taken effect yet.
But finally we cottoned on (good work Fangsoki), and began the task of finding the info we needed.
Phew!! Info found, we ducked back to the car to work out the finals. Well, the cipher took a while and when we had our answer we still questioned it but drove where it said to have a look anyway.
Well as we drove there, things started to suggest we could be right, it seemed a likely relatable area, so we went for a little walk and found something that related to the clue about 200m out. A bit of a look and I thought I saw something likely. Dubiously Fangsoki checked what I saw and voila! It was exactly what we were after!
Log signed then a spot of cobblers peg plant removal before we were on our way.
Thanks for the cache makira.

This was the first cache find for the day for 1MinnieMoo and I.

We parked up and got pretty confused about what was what. We eventually sorted where to get the information from. We wandered around and collated the information.

Then the next 25 minutes was sitting in the car trying to sort out the cipher. 1MinnieMoo came up with something - but it didn't look right on the map. Well its better than what I have managed.

We made our way to the area. Okay - well it's not going to be where 1MinnieMoo calculated where it would be - but have we just managed to stumble on the hide anyway?

A preliminary glance said "no". A secondary glance and a suggestion from 1MinnieMoo.. and some fancy footwork by yours truly said "yes". We were soon signing the cache.

I am glad we managed to get this one. Incidentally, this cache is currently the 402nd oldest active cache in Queensland (a place shared with six other caches). A great little cache remembering the sacrifices others have made. TFTC makira Smile

I’ve had experience with all aspects of this cache in the past but never as a field puzzle. Information was collected easily enough. Then the cipher came out okay with a small discrepancy. The final conversion required took a little more time. But we were soon at GZ with the container in hand. Love the history here from start to finish. Thanks for the cache

We hadn't known when we pulled in to camp the night at Rocky Creek Campground what special significance it had. It was here that MrsG's father was sent to the training camp before going overseas during WW11. There's a lot to see with new work already done and more still happening in readiness for VP Day this month.

We worked on the multi while we were there. With GZ looking like a place of interest we went to look for the cache after dinner. After a fairly long search we still hadn't found it and decided to come back in the morning. Next morning we still had no luck but were able to have a better look at the location. It appears there's been a lot of recent clean up work done and in our opinion, the cache with it. We replaced it with approval from Gruftys. TFTC makira, fav point.

Our last cache in 2019. We had an amazing and eventful Geocaching year and are looking forward to the next.
After an important meeting earlier today, we stopped here on our way home. The numbers and rows were easy to find, for the matrix we used an online tool but couldn't find a website to properly convert the coords. But even with the wrong format the general direction seemed to fit. Thanks to the hint and a good intuition we found the box about 250m away from where the GPS (falsely) pointed to.
Box is very wet inside, but seems not broken, log is damp but okayish to write on.

TFTC and a happy new year 2 ya all

I gathered the information and tried to make sense out of it. I gave up and decided to wait until I got home. Used my fave tool excel to create the matrix. I was still bamboozled. I badgered away untilI worked out what was what. Another trip was made to collect the cache and pay another visit to Tolga and Atherton. Lovely.

We explored this area last April, and came up with the sting of numbers required, and from there we came unstuck. Cracked the code recently, thanks to FelixII, but our coords took us 161 m beyond the fence. Intuition bought me back and we found the cache. Left travel buddy tb

Travelling around Australia using Geocaching as our Tour Guide.

Staying in Walkamin for a few weeks, yesterday we headed out to find the last few close caches before we leave the area later in the week, but came unstuck with this one. We collected all the info but couldnt get the vignere to work correctly. [:o)] It really does help to read the cache page correctly.

Once we had some friends give us a link to another page we pulled the cache page up on the computer and our error was clear. Sometimes its just nice to read it on a big screen rather than the tiny gpsr.

anyways coords sorted and a revisit today to add our name to the log. Thanks for helping us explore this great spot.

We are camped in almost the exact same place we were in 3 years ago when I spent hours trying unsuccessfully to solve this multi - or should it be a puzzle cache ? I had walked around gathering the required information again as I didn't have the same book with me this trip, and still couldn't make head or tail of decoding the cipher. However with a pretty good nudge from PPRASS, I was able to head off and claim a smilie and a Tb.
Thanks for the challenging cache Makira. Stamped log.

TFTC. We had spent the night at Rocky Creek about a week ago, just before the start of our housesit in Mareeba. We had gathered the information and had sat down quietly to create the required matrix. It was then a matter of time to decode the information. We had been to Lake Tinaroo today and on the return to Mareeba we headed to GZ. Using the iPhone we were well out of position. We pulled up and I remembered that we needed to change a setting. Out came the GPS, made the required change and we were only 70 metre from GZ. Quick find after that.

We got it! We camped here last night and have the cache a shot this morning. We found all the plaques, used that laptop to decode the coordinates and then couldn't work it out. We decides to stay again to right so though we'd go for a little drive and before you know we're right in the zone! Thanks very much for the cache

Phew.... This one was a task and a half! We found ourselves wandering up and down and around and around to secure all of the requirements for this little beauty of a cache. After some assistance from our partners in crime, make that partners in Geocaching - PPrass, we finally had the cordinates we needed to find the actual cache.

We found a suitable place to park both our caravans and commenced the hunt, it wasn't long before the cache was found.

thanks Makira

Found at 2:15 PM GAFF4 in the company of Ian&Sue - Team Pathfinder.
Now that was one tough multi - almost a puzzle which should have a field puzzle attribute on the cache page.
Found it difficult to work through the instructions as to begin with where it says - "Below the main plaque are a series of plaques dedicated to various army units" - we thought that it meant just below the actual main plaque and not 30 metres away!
We managed to use our initiative and worked through the puzzle to get to a very logical location where there were lots of insect eggs on top of the container.
Interesting story about the battles and we were already aware of Macarthur's unbending obsession with how to defeat the Japanese.
Thanks makira.

Spending Christmas with the family on the Atherton Tablelands and took a day to venture out with Wolffman05 for a spot of caching.

Finding the necessary information from the plaques was the easy part. The cipher took awhile, but we eventually got over the line with a viable set of coordinates. A short distance later, we were at the GZ and Wolffman05 came up with the find after a brief search.

Thanks for the cache and the nod to the men and women who served our nation during the Second World War.

Log signed. Took nothing and left nothing. Cache container in reasonable condition, but the log is badly water damaged. Drained all the water out of the cache, but the log is too far gone.

Favorite Point awarded.

Finding this cache has now given me a total find count of 1582.

Thanks for the cache hide **makira**. Smile

I actually did most of the work for this on a previous visit– brought a matrix with me, gathered the clues, worked out the co-ords and entered them in my GPS (not forgetting to change settings first Smile )
But I was a bit thrown by the final location (I had expected it to be in a different direction for some reason), so decided to double-check at home and leave the finding for another day. Contented myself with finding “Tropical Igloo”, and some general exploring.
On arriving at the location today, the cache was found easily using the clue. Took a small butterfly, left a squirrel.
I had been past this location a few times without ever realising any of this was here.
Thanks to makira for bringing me here to learn more about my local history.
Big thanks to Capricorn Dancer and Sea Reason for re-establishing the cache.

Myself and CherriBee teamed up to try solve this complicated puzzle, but unfortunately the Vigenere Cypher has us confused and I have decided to mark this as a "Did not find". We have created the matrix, but the numbers and letters are not returning any discernible GPS coordinates. Sad

29-Jun-15
WHEW - that was a long struggle - I started this with geopartner and we got all the letters and numbers. I then did the research for the cypher and came horribly unstuck after lots of work. Actually gave up when bright geokid worked out that I had left a line out of the matrix. It then came right and off we went together today to find the cache. So easy once you know how!! This is my first complicated hunt - and it was worth it. Thanks for rattling the brain tissue! The cache was wet and muddy bit dry inside and quite empty apart from the log book. We dropped a few swoppables in.

WOOHOO!! After much puzzling, trying, puzzling, trying again and reading of logs Geohubby finally gave up and appealed for help from a previous finder. However almost as soon as he had sent his 'help!!' message he had a break through so we jumped in the Geomobile and drove the relatively short distance to the new co-ords. However as we approached approximately where we thought the cache would be located the GPS was steering us into the mountains behind AthertonSurprised

The cache description said GZ was only a short drive away so we knew something must be 'up a wattle' so it was back to the drawing boardTwisted

While pondering the dilemma over lunch Geohubby realised he had written one number down incorrectly so we soon had the new co-ords into the GPS....and we were off againRazz

This time we were lead exactly to the sort of area we were expecting and the co-ords were spot on with the find. Fortunately on readng previous logs we had seen where very kind cachers before us had pointed out the error in arriving at the correct co-ords so we had been able to arrive at the correct answer....eventuallyBig Grin

We enjoyed finding this one and GZ is very appropriate for this multiSmile

Many thanks for keeping us (read here GeohubbyBig Grin) amused for a couple of hours. A great cache and a favourite point from us[^][^][^]

Thanks for a fabulous challenge with this one. Took me a while to work out the coordinates but a few hours that afternoon doing some research and all was coming together. The next morning we headed off to the coordinates and never realized this spot existed. From looking at the clue it was fairly easy to find the cache although my GPS still told me I was 200m away. I still don't understand the significance of the last 5 digits after the coordinates or the need to change GPS setting but happy to have my hands on the cache finally.

Is Rocky Creek derelict?
Sea Reason and I, Capricorn Dancer, are pretty confident that we found Rocky Creek GZ but there was no container. Where we searched, matched the clue perfectly. It was apparent that somebody else had recently scoured, and raked out, the area where they (and we) expected it to be. The other party, though, had not registered a Did Not Find. It’s been over a year since it was found.
We have tried to contact the owner, the last did-not- finders, and the last finders, but to no avail, so we are going to put a container in place where we reckon it should be because it would be a terrible shame to lose this fabulous cache.
If the container which we leave is in the wrong place, so be it, it may sit forever, but if it’s in the correct place, it’s a win.
It will be a bare minimum (log, and a scratchie), and if it proves correct, subsequent finders might be able to bring a Geocache note or sticker explaining it’s existence, and a few extra swaps.
We’ll place the container over the next day or two (30 July 2014), but we can’t take ownership, because we live a long way away. Somebody might care to volunteer? It would only be maintenance, the hard work is done.

12-Jul-14
Took a long time for Capricorn Dance to work out code, then headed off to GZ it looked like someone had searched and we searched but could not find container. We were fairly sure we had correct location. But no luck.

11-Jul-14
I've stopped here, at the parking area, quite often over the last ten years. This time, though, Sea Reason and I spent few hours on the pesky matrix, and eventually we reckoned we had a workable location statistic. That is, of course, other than the 'rogue' letter which cast a shadow of doubt over all the others. We assumed it to be the letter we would have liked to see, and we fired up the VST (Very Sexy Truck) and headed in the indicated direction. Lots of clues soon led us to believe that we were on track.
Try as we might, though, no container was forthcoming.
We could see that others had very recently scratched around, in and between, according to the clue, and the ground at what we assumed to be GZ was pretty clean. Still, we could not find anything that resembled the container.
The trouble with puzzles is that there's usually no way to checksum. If we had, for example, the total of the digits which are in the final coordinates, it would be comforting, and rather than just scratch about, I could bring in a back-hoe. That's geocaching though. Win some, lose some.

Thanks for the very cool cache.

27-Jun-14
Good walk around the camp site and memorial site took us a while but in the end made a program, for the vignere cypher. Got to GZ, but we found no cache. Request the cache be checked to see it still exists.

Had a go at this one today. Spent hours cracking the code and figuring out a new co-ordinate, but in the end came up empty Sad thought we were on to it when the area we found matched the clue, but after searching high and low we couldn't find it anywhere Sad have sent owner an email checking our co-ordinates to make sure we were right, so now to wait and hear back if the cache is actually still there :S good fun though, took up a few hours on a Sunday arvo...

Hooray, first and probably last of the day.
Wonderfully historical area, so glad caching has brought me here.
Very nearly posted a DNF due to coordinates being out however one last look and the treasure was found. The area has also had a fire come through recently so I was a bit worried it had melted.
Thanks If for replacing the log and internal container. All in good order.

I had visited Rocky Creek yesterday arvo and found a couple of nearby caches, but this one was put in the too hard basket and I headed back to Atherton for the night.
This morning I was headed north again (although I didn't get far) and stopped at Rocky Creek in time for morning tea Razz
Let's see now I have to do that, find those, write down them and decode that !!
Doesn't sound impossible, but it could take a while Smile
Hey !! I've got all day Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

Stonehenge is amazing and every plaque is superbly crafted and makes for interesting reading.
But I would be here all day walking up and down the rows !!
That much reading would be headache inducing !!
I found an easier way to work out the first part of this puzzle [^]
Although one of my answers still needed a stroll through the stones to narrow down which of several answers were correct.

With my 22 character string of gibberish written down, I headed for a picinic table to do the decoding.
Fortunately I have cached in Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide, where evil puzzle cache hiders, just like 'Makira', are numerous !! Wink
So I know a thing or two about Vinegary Codes.
Half an hour of scribbling on the back of a grocery receipt (300ml Brown Vinegar ... $2.39) later and I had a useful string of gibberish which the GPS could convert to a GZ Big Grin

I sped off up the road full of hope that I had worked everything out right.

Sure enough at GZ a likely historic spot came into view.
A short stroll around the grounds to soak up some history and I found meself at GZ.
Buried deep was the cache and when I picked it up, I knew immediately that the log book would not be a pretty sight [:o]

Yukko !!
The patient was in need of some treatment !!

Back at the geomobile triage unit, I swabbed the insides of the container.
A few of the contents were consigned to the medical waste bin and the rest, including the logbook moved onto surgery.
Alas the logbook remains in a damp coma.
I transplanted a new container with a new logbook into the original container.
Most of the original swaps and logbook remain inside the patient Big Grin

TFTC and brainstrain.
[red]This is a top notch multi-puzzle cache that should fill in a few hours if you are camped nearby, or not in a rush [^]
Get's a fave from me !!

"Unbelievable! I can't believe we've found it" is what I have been saying in my head and mumbling all day. The puzzle was very tricky and alot to figure out. We were having problems trying to understand the 22 letters and digits thing. Ok, I'm not the brightest spark after 2hrs sleep. We really had fun finding all the different plaques, that was just brilliant and very emotional and educational. I have been to this park many times before even for memorial services and not once did I really take in the info on the plaques like I did today. Way to go Makira for this challenge! But that is pretty much the only luck we had with this puzzle today. Past logs got me curious at looking at other ruins in the area and curiosity led me to GZ with the help of the really great hint. The cache was pretty much trashed, very water logged with the contents and container quite perished, log book unsignable. If I get the chance I would like to go back sometime soon and replace cache with something a bit more waterproof as I reckon anyone solving this puzzle is a champ and it would be nice to log it. Big Grin

I had spent many hours......coding....decoding....re-coding.....and......and taking panadol!! But frustration had paid off in the end. I arrived at where the GPS said to stop....well I did not think I was in the correct place but after expanding my search and then seeing the obvious I soon had the container out of it's hiding place. Everything is wet but I was able to sign the "yellow paper" left by babynomad. On my next trip up I will see what I can replace to preserve the cache. Really enjoyed this one and with all the frustration behind me I can record a smiley face against this one, SL, TNLN, TFTC

Finally worked out the Vigenere Cypher. Tried 2 weeks ago, but just couldn't get the hang of it.
Tried again this week.
I realized after 2 days of trying that I was actually encrypting instead of Decrypting!!!! DAH>>>>

Thought I had it, but must have made a mistake, as the cache is not close by.
However, took a drive and Perseverance paid off??
GPS had us going another 195m into farmer joe’s land – nearly gave up – Heading back to car and I remembered someone writing something about a wall!!
Voila – Cache in hand. Totally saturated, full of water. Log book almost unrecognisable – mould growing on everything. No geocoin. Was going to leave a TB here, but this really needs maintenance.

Emptied all contents out – took photo and dried. Added a yellow piece of paper (didn’t have spare books or bags).

PHEW!!!! Finally get to put a smilley face to this one!!!

We finally went back and completed stage two of this cache. Our initial visit ended in frustration after trying to crack the code - which was made even more futile not being able to find a 36x36 vigenese cipher. With all of the info in hand we went back home to solve the puzzle. After a few hours the coords were finally cracked. We found the cache easily enough though it is in poor condition and we even had to dig a little for this one. The container itself was full of water and the log unsignable. Sorry we didn't have any gear to replace with.
Despite the condition of the cache, this is probably our most favourite of them all. Good work in setting this one up.Thanks so much for taking us to this wonderful piece of Australian history as well.
TNLN.

If anyone would like a copy of a 36x36 vigenese cipher, please email and I will forward one (it took me some time to type up so it may as well go to good use.)

Cache was entirely full of water and the log indistinguishable. It will require a new log and the swappable contents to be dried out.

A bit of thinking is an understatement. Following the construction of the Vigenere Cypher we visited the site and collected all of the required data which was to form the key. Frustration set in as we were unable to decypher the GPS co-ordinates on site. Once home again, it all made sense and so a second visit today resulted in an immediate find of the cache. An excellent multi-cache which was thoroughly enjoyed.

A relatively easy find apart from the deciphering of the code. Took thong keyring left On On home star.

Sad Didn't find this one and I was looking so much towards it. Went down in the morning and got all the clues, went back home and needed the internet to get the sipher code which my daughter solved (good work Brat) with one correction needed, but by the time I got back to find the cache, it was raining and I wasn't going to walk through tall wet grass so will have to come back next time I up here. Lots of history. TFTC (so far)

09:15 - Loved the history and the puzzle with the cipher. To solve the cipher had to stop at an internet cafe, then had a little issue with fitting one answer. Simply replaced 'K' with 'E' and it seemed to fit perfectly. No problem locating GZ. +/-0. T4TC and challenge.

Stopped to learn some WWII history and was taken to the cache site by a previous finder. Wow such a lot of wounded soldiers were treated at this facility! Followed the hint and the cache was soon in hand. Took thermometer geocoin. Left nil. TFTC.

Cache number 11 for the day, in a run of 22 for the weekend on the tablelands. We really enjoyed the challenge of this one, having never used a cipher before. It took quite a while to put it all together, and even then getting the GPS to point us to the right place was a bit of a challenge (if and when you decrypt the second hint, you will know what I mean). Anyway, we headed off on what I thought would be a waste of time, but the final cache location all fell into place and the Junior Camel soon had the cache in hand. This entire area is very moving, and quite easily brings a tear to the eye. It is important that all who visit take a moment to remember the sacrifice that so many ordinary people made to make the world and particularly Australia what it is today. Took the Unknown Soldier TB, left a penny. Thanks for this cache, it was much appreciated.
