Almost a year from the last find, but we got it. It was a little exposed so supplied a little extra camo. Still in good condition.Find number 8966 on 10 August 2024. Multi-cacheThanks For The Cache

I had some time today to head out for some caching, and focussed on this area.
I biked my way up the hill, finding Ad Lab locations, but came a cropper on the slippery wall.
After clawing my way to the top, a little bruised and battered, I completed the calculations for this GZ, and made my way there.
The container was visible from some way off, as it was sitting on, rather than under the likely hide.
After signing, and replacing the tattered log bag, I rehid the cache container more discreetly out of sight.

Yippee bingo bango - a few contours covered before getting here. Just as well I’m on the trusty treadles and don’t mind a few ups and downs - even if I did have to walk a bit. It’s been a great choice to detour here before heading to home base at higher altitudes. I’m not a motor head but this had me quite fascinated. TFTC and the fun.

26-Jan-23
TFTF! This was the 2nd find to completing the Adventure Lab for this area and finding the bonus cache.

13-Nov-22
Done after an incredible climb. This was an interesting wanderer. If only it was still operational, we bet it would be very popular.

30-Oct-22
Collecting the information for this multi was easy, the climb to retrieve the container was a little more difficult. But all good in the end and cache was quickly found at GZ. Thanks to Quasar for the cache.

01-Oct-22
Tftc. Tnln. Love the motor sport history here.

20-Jun-22
In the area and pleased to have found this one after crunching the numbers. Would not like to ride down here.
Thanks for this one Quaser

20-Jan-22
I have certainly climbed a few hills today while caching in Templestowe and Warrandyte. Great exercise and great motivation when there is a cache at the end. This cache was found with no hassles.

02-Jan-22
I was living in Port Melbourne and then moved to Chadstone when this track was still active. Being a tow truck driver (back then) I would often head out to Sandown and other tracks on my days off. Never had the opportunity to attend any events here though. More's the pity.
I had walked this circuit once before when I was losing weight in preparation for surgery.
Back out here today with my mate, Ricky to get a bit of post lock down exercise.
Gathered the required information and made a nice quick find at GZ.
Interesting to read logs from long ago. Thank you for placing and maintaining this cache for all these years Quasar. Much appreciated.

27-Nov-21
Find while doing a caching loop of the area. Just can't believe how steep the final section of the climb is.

Find #11662

On a longish walk in the area and stopped by to pick this one up along the way. An interesting history lesson here.

Thanks to Quasar for the cache.

Big things are continuing to happen! *Are you joining the fun again in 2022?*

Finally able to get out and find a cache or two.
Began this multi way back before lockdown but never got around to finishing it.
Returned today to convert to a smiley.
Thanks for bringing us here today by placing this cache, Quasar

12-Oct-21
We have been here a couple of times before we even considered there might be a cache. GT37 knew people that had competed here so she had taken me to show me. We had photographed the sign to complete later but for some reason, never got around to it. At last, we can add a smiley here. Thanks for the cache.

12-Oct-21
This is one of my favourite caches, an old one. I have been here many times as a friend had participated at this hill climb a couple of times and the one down in Gippsland. Pleased to finally remember to look for and complete the cache located here. Thanks for the cache and bringing us back here.

01-Sep-21
This is our third for the day!

03-Aug-21
Found it TFTC

01-Jul-21
Out for a walk along this trail after gathering some FTFs earlier this morning. The sun is shining, we have donuts right across our COVID board and caches everywhere to find.

I needed a multi today so I set off to grab this one quickly before getting my second COVID vaccine jab. Quickly or so I thought. Having parked at the top, I made my way to the bottom as quickly (but safely) as I could avoiding any unnecessary injury. With the details to hand I made my way to GZ by the shortest distance and using as many goat tracks as possible.

Once at the correct location this was a quick find and I returned back to my car to continue my journey.

Thanks Quasar for the cache.

04-Mar-21
Collected the information and proceeded to the cache. Don't know what was hardest- going up or coming down - that is one steep section in the middle.

23-Feb-21
I found the history of the car race very interesting! I never knew about this. Thanks for bringing the information to my attention. I will admit I drove a hill, and then the geopup accompanied us to GZ. Thanks for placing the cache Quasar.

30-Jan-21
DeadlyErnest told me I had been here before but it all looked very unfamiliar. I was starting to worry about cognitive decline. Seeing that I hadn't logged the cache reassured me that I hadn't actually been here. My loss! Bring back the race, I say.

06-Dec-20
Unbelievably steap climb! Great story!

14-Oct-20
They say you learn something every day, wellI, learnt this is a great little hill and history behind it thank you for placing

19-Jul-20
What a climb! Spectacular nature and walk! And the log book dating back all those years...

14-Jun-20
Great fun cache. TFTC

11-Jun-20
I did the hard yards for this cache a few weeks ago when I was in the area and did the breathtaking walk up and down the trail to the the sign. I collected the info that day but it was getting dark so I calculated the co-ords when I got home.

I was back to find the cache today having loaded the co-ords in my GPSr. It was a much shorter walk down the hill today and I spotted the cache as I approached GZ as it was fully exposed. I retrieved the cache and signed the original old logbook at 3:55 pm. I took a fox and left a tiny torch for any future cachers who are night caching here (lol). I then returned the cache to its hiding spot and tried to cover it a bit better. I used hand sanitiser before and after finding the cache to stay safe.

Thanks Quasar for the interesting multi and cache. It was great that it still had the 2006 logbook in it. I enjoyed learning about the history of the Templestowe Hill Climb and reading the logs of several cachers I have met at events.

02-Feb-20
I've been here years ago, although not when the racing was still happening. It's still as steep as ever!! Tftc

10-Jan-20
*Found on the 10 Jan 2020 @ 12:04 pm.*
*Cache find # 10592.*

I decided to head North to find a few caches before the change and the rain came along.
Now this was just another cache on the map, it is also a multi so I decided to have a look at it, it wasn’t until I got here that I realised what this one was all about.
I found this cache to be very interesting and there is certainly a bit of history here, why didn’t I know about this place back in the early 80’s, I would loved to seen it in action, but now all I can do is walk some of the track.
The section, called the wall is certainly very steep to walk up, the photo never shows how steep hills really are.
At the posted coordinates, I read about this place and gathered what I needed to find the cache and headed off walking what is left of this track and up the wall before heading over to GZ where I was able to make a fairly quick find.

**Thanks to Quasar for placing this cache.**

08-Dec-19
Found this almost a year ago as we needed a break from the Christmas festivities. We had ridden our bikes along the nearby trail a number of times but never stopped to chase this particular smiley.

But all was well here, cords found in short order and the final was soon signed. TFTC

29-Nov-19
A nice clear morning and an opportunity to put some more smileys on the map before the weather turns sour again . This is the first time i have been to this part of the Mullum Trail . A nice straight forward Multi and some interesting facts about the Templestowe Hill climb . This deserves a favourite .
Dropped a TB . Tool one too . Yhanks Quasar

16-Nov-19
Thought the first car trackable we left here needed a friend so we dropped another one!

26-Oct-19
Dropped a very appropriate trackable to this cache

16-Aug-19
The heavens decided to open up just as I headed to our calculated co-ordinates. The track was very slippery but found the cache relatively quickly and in good condition. Picked up the TB. TFTC and the multi

11-Aug-19
Given I had parked not too far away from the multi waypoint, I decided to finish with this one. It would have been interesting to see the track and racing in full swing. With the quiet today, it was hard to imagine the racing. I didn't walk via the track as it was very slippy. Straightforward find at GZ and TB dropped. TFTC

09-Aug-19
To climb a hill is putting it mildly - it reached a point about two thirds of the way through where things got so vertical that I was a little bit surprised that my feet actually stayed on the ground. This was the final cache we needed to complete the mystery at the museum challenge - TFTC, and for the interesting information about local history.

08-Aug-19
Bit of a steep walk in wet weather! Great bit of local history TFTC

05-Aug-19
I like a local history cache, and this is a story I hadn't heard. I'm keen to come back on the bike to see how far I can get. Until then, I'll be happy with today's successful effort on foot. Thanks Quasar

20-Jul-19
TFTC great walk on a winters day. Thank you for encouraging me to get out of the house.

28-Jun-19
Love the hill climb.
This is our first multi cache.

28-Apr-19
Found with ICW. This is a cache I have long wanted to tick off the list. Going back several years my plan was to look for it next time I was in the neighbourhood, but that never happened. Today we made the pilgrimage and after marvelling at the steepness of the incline signed the log. Tftc.

28-Apr-19
I remember when I was kid, (revealing my age) they used to have the Templestowe hit climb on TV. There were lots of classes of cars but inevitably it was won by a purpose built hill climb car.
Found with Ninja Tortoise today and surprised no one had found it for in excess of six months.

24-Aug-18
Great day fo caching, and a great little multi, interesting history to this location .
Well worth the walk up here.
Thanks Quasar

Cool to read about the history of this hill. Coords for WP1 were easily got, and the cache was quickly found once at GZ. TFTC and bringing me here

15-Jan-18
Geo buddy cmkoe3 and I visited WP1 some time ago, but we ran out of time and had to head home before we had a chance to retrieve the cache.
Upon our return we avoided climbing the steep hill, and parked at a higher spot, then walked down.
I'm surprised any car ever made it up that slope.
The cache is in good conditioning.
TFTC

Last cache of the day, found with Pmk49. The "Wall" is very intimidating.
Tftc!

#1105 - 5.40pm
Wow! Awesome history!
I grew up near here and never knew about it. Learning amazing local history one of the things I love about this game.
It was pretty sweet seeing the old paved track that banked into each bend. And yes, 'The Wall' is pretty crazy - I don't reckon my car would get up there! I wondered what the steel relics to the right of the incline were for...
The cache was straightforward. I dropped a TB and added some extra camo.
Thanks Quasar.
This was excellent. It's a shame the back end of the track is now a residential estate, but at least we can still get a considerable sense of the motoring past in this area.
Easily a favourite.
Smile

20-Aug-17
I'd been walking around for much of the day, but it occurred to me that I hadn't climbed anything even vaguely resembling a hill, despite being in one of Melbourne's hilliest parts. So I had high hopes for this multi possibly helping to rectify this grave oversight. (I think I can probably reveal that I did in fact climb a somewhat steep-ish hill here--nice--without that being a spoiler.)

I hadn't the foggiest idea about the stuff that went on here (having not read the description in advance I probably murmured things like "What? Seriously?!") and this may actually be the most unexpectedly fascinating bit of history I've learned from a cache this year. I have no particular enthusiasm for motorsports but I found myself lingering and looking around for quite a while regardless.

The cache was found in a jiffy and I was somewhat amazed to learn that no-one's been here for more than 4 months. The things that go on in the minds of geocachers are quite a mystery to me. Anyway, thanks a lot Quasar!

EDIT: [Some cool olde footage from ACMI's collection](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB4AZEMC8yE)

17-Apr-17
That's a nice steep hill! Thanks for the workout.

29-Oct-16
Came by from near the Yarra where I got lost trying to find another cache. Made my way to wp1, then made the decision to drive back here later rather than go to GZ and go back down to my car in warrandyte rd.
The hill climbs must've been a sight to see back in the day. Tftc

29-Jun-16
That was a very steep hill. Almost slipped on the way down. But the way up I took the more gripped approach. TFTC

24-Jun-16
Thanks for bringing me to an interesting piece of history The things you find out when you're geocaching is one of the things I love about this game.
Coldest day for 20 years apparently so the walk up the hill soon warmed me up.

19-Jun-16
I've been wanting to visit this place for some time and, of course, find this cache as well! It's amazing that such a feature can exist in such a tranquil piece of suburbia.

On a cool cloudy afternooni, I convinced my niece and nephew (and their folks) to come for a walk with me, and the promise of finding a geocache sweetened the deal. They were determined to make it to the top, desire the slippery miss in places.

The cache was a quick find and a few swaps were made. We signed the log, me in my usual manner and the niece and nephew as 'The Treasure Kids'. TFTC.

25-Apr-16
Collected the required information the other day and calculated the final before returning today to claim the find. The logbook is in slight disarray so signed in the most logical spot and left this topmost for the next finder. Thanks for the multi Quasar.

27-Feb-16
Was unsuccessful the first time, but came back later and found it quick and easy TFTC

23-Jan-16
Suscoe was out early today to wander about this area of Melbourne in search of caches of all types.
The day started out quite drizzly and later on it became sunny.
Traffic was light on most roads which was appreciated.
Suscoe remembered attending hill climbs at Camperdown years ago but we never made it here.
An impressive course indeed.
The cache was found where we thought it might.
Thanks to Quasar for creating this multi to commemorate this course.

29-Dec-15
Found OK. Quite a climb but worth it

24-Oct-15
A lovely afternoon to be out with my husband, who is not a converted geocacher yet. This was the sixth of six caches that we found and a reward that I thought would interest him after the previous six that we found.
My husband enjoyed the history lesson but could not believe that cars could actually drive the course. we walked a small portion but then decided to drive up to the cache location. I picked up the Travel Octant Geocoin.
Thanks, quasar, for placing this cache.

22-Aug-15
It was such a beautiful day so I just had to go out and grab a few caches. This was the last cache that I completed in the area. After already having walked ~10km today the last thing I needed was this hill. I left the Travel Octant Geocoin. TFTC.

05-Jun-15
My last cache for today. Tftc and the exercise. Couldn't get the pen to write so need to bring your own.

07-Mar-15
Having walked passed this area plenty of times I now know about the race history and have walked the wall. Thanx

We were heading out today to find a couple of long multis and a couple of long walk caches with my buddy today but I had an hour to kill before I arrived at his place so I managed to get 10 around here including a multi in about 1 hour.
I parked up the top of the hill and headed down for the clues and after a few quick calculations and a short walk the cache was found safe and sound. Now quite hot from the steep walk I was glad to jump back into the air con of the car.
Thanks Quasar for the cache, the hunt and the fun.

15-Nov-14
Phew, that is one steep hill. I can't imagine what it would have felt like to travel down it at speed.
This was an enjoyable multi and it was great to learn about the earlier history of the spot, not to mention the view.
Thanks to Quasar for this cache.

27-Oct-14
I found a very slack and easy way of doing this multi without any hill climbing. Thanks for showing us this area, I might be back for some training here. TFTC

03-Aug-14
We had seen this one last year when we were in the area to do some of the baseball series, but had left it since it was too wet. Today was a lovely winter's day, so we headed out to clean up more of the series and decided to grab this one too. Wow! What a track, not for me, thats for sure. Thanks for the hide, bringing us here, and for the history lesson.

03-Aug-14
With a beautiful winters afternoon ahead of us and with the bikes in tow I set off with Moosetash to make this our first find for the day. Wow what an interesting piece of history of this area and after signing the log we took the easier road back down. Tftc Quasar.

19-Jul-14
MasterIschi and Arthur and Dent went on another, again time shorter, cache run. We collected ten or so caches. The baluke series was finished and we collected some more along the Mullum Mullum Creek. We send a TFTC to all cache owners.

What an impressive hill
Suburbia is encroaching fast though
Got here just before dark after a Google recon

Our first cache if the day. We would have arranged to be dropped off at the bottom of the hill and not the top, if we'd realised where the final co-ords would have led us. Good exercise anyway. Interesting spot too. TFTC

Found this one today. I was chasing some specific caches to complete a challenge I started in NZ recently. The one fitted the bill as it was a multi. Anyway I managed to locate the information and the cache without having to climb the hill (which I was very relieved about!) as even the part that I did climb was quite steep. Really interesting history and I am not sure that I would like to have been involved in the car races up this hill. Signed log but didn't swap anything today.

Thanks for the cache Quasar.

28-Oct-13
Wow what a climb! Loved the history and the area. Despite living nearish I had no idea about the race. Thank you for showing me this historic area. Log was in good condition and plenty of space. Picked up two travel bugs - will take them up to Sydney next week. Tftc!

28-Oct-13
Had been meaning to do this one for a while as its not far from home .... Interesting bit of history ... Got double the exercise as I had to carry a grumpy Master D! Nice cache ... TFTC

25-Oct-13
Thanks for bringing me out here. I wish i had been here when the cars were racing all those years ago. Walking up the hill with my bike was hard enough work. Now i want to try this track in my 4by. It would be a lot of fun.

Dropped off 2 TB here for others to continue on there journey.

The first week of pre-poll duties for the upcoming Federal Elections is behind me, and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's day off. While I'm here in the northeast suburbs, it's time to play...

This is the second of the old hill climb sites I've seen... I found myself marshalling about halfway up the other when it formed part of the MBTC's MAD Ride, several years ago, and it was quite a short, sharp shock to the participating cyclists.

This afternoon, I parked at the top and made my way down what's left of this incredibly steep bit of bitumen, reached the posted coordinates, and discovered I'd chosen wisely. The shorter, dirt route back up served me well and another smiley was in my possession. Cheers, Quasar.

Ventured out with my Cub Scouts in tow on a Grey Wolf hike up up up this hill .....we stopoped at the first waypoint and worked out the clues but ran out of time to find the cache. So today, sunny day i took the walk to the hill to find the cache .....TFTC

Found at 14:44
After a dnf nearby and collecting done numbers for a mystery, I made my way over here. After reading about the event I made my way to gz.
WOW, what a hill. The numbers don't do the wall justice. I'm glad I took the less steep way up. I wasn't sure I could walk down the wall, it's hard to imagine cars going up it.
Thanks Quasar for the cache and the piece of unexpected local motoring history.

28-Jun-13
Found late this afternoon at dusk, certainly a steep and slippery walk to cache, however a very interesting spot. SL tftc.

08-Jun-13
WHAT A HILL!!!

I parked in Arlunya st, where it was a very slippery slope down to WP1.
Of course I didn't find an easy way there, and guess what I didn't find a easy way to WP2 too.
Though back to the car was easy after finding the cache,
I'm sure my body will feel it all tomorrow Surprised

I loved the history,

thanks Quasar [:x]

02-Jun-13
I tried to explain to quiet1_au that I was after steps (participating in the Global Corporate Challenge again), but that the pedometer can't distinguish between steps up a steep hill and steps along flat ground so there is no advantage to climbing a hill when you count steps... in the end, I gave in and we climbed it. I was glad that someone placed a tree in a convenient spot to stop me from sliding down when my shows lost grip. TFTC

02-Jun-13
I'd made a half-hearted attempt at this cache sometime last year, but finding myself amongst the mansions in failing twilight where parking seemed non-existent I decided to leave it for another day. Walking the Yarra trail with lochb today, I persuaded her to give this one a go (normally it's me who avoids climbing hills! Razz ) Finding the path clearly marked on my trusty OpenMTBMap on the GPS, we were quickly at WP1 were the information was gathered and GZ plotted. Now the tough part... We took the shorter but steeper route, but it wasn't toooooo bad. Crossing the road again at the top - which I presumed might be "The Wall" due to its steepness - we continued on and it wasn't long before lochb had located the cache. We decided against taking the road down again - lochb had "slick" rubber on, and the wet-weather had made grip a bit treacherous - instead taking the off-road route again where the grip seemed better (as long as you avoid the clay!...) TFTC, an interesting historical location, and I can't help shaking off the feeling I've crossed paths with that MG-Holden visiting a car club motokhana some years ago - there can't be too many around! Smile

24-May-13
With a couple of hours free this afternoon it was time for a cache or two.
Magnificent location, I can just hear those old machines powering up this track.
Quick decode and find.
Thanks for bringing me here Quasar

A great piece of hidden motoring history

12-Jan-13
I'd been wanting to go Geocaching all day today but, I just couldn't seem to make up my mind on where to go or what to look for. After a morning of doing nothing, I eventually got out this afternoon for a couple of locals

This was the best of the day. Another great example of why I like Geocaching. I've been living in and around this area for over 40 years but I never knew about this little piece of history. I'll have to ask my Dad if we ever came here when I was a kid but I can't ever remember it. Thankfully, I took the path in from the bottom of the hill and found the sign straight away.

Cache is in excellent condition. TNLNSL Thanks Quasar for showing me this little piece of local history

GLGC - Gotta Love GeoCaching

05-Jan-13
Templestowe Hill Climb - my Dad used to bring me here in the mid 1960's and the memories that doing this cache has brought back.

We were there the day in 1967 that Alan Hamilton finally managed to crack 50 seconds in his Porsche in a cloud of cement dust (an earlier car had left an oil trail the whole length of the run) - that is an AVERAGE speed of over 70 km/h from a standing start and with multiple sharp corners and climbing "The Wall" with a gradient of 1 in 2.5. It was a phenomenal effort.

We were also there the day of the debut of the Ford GT Falcon, 1966 I think it was. "Werribee Tan" was the euphemistic and rather disparaging term the commentator used to describe their colour (in those days, Melbourne only had one sewerage treatment plant and it was out at Werribbe...do I need to say more?). How did these big powerful cars go? Not very well, they were soundly beaten by the little old (modified) Austin 7's. Of course, we were still in the era of skinny tyres and drum brakes and when Mini Coppers could beat Holden Monaros around somewhere like Calder race track so the result wasn't that great a surprise.

Oh, the cache. Yes, I found it without any trouble in amongst a lot of reminiscing. I walked in from where you park for the nearby Swagman's Repose cache and found the information sign with the answers to all the questions. For "old time's sake", I walked the track from The Esses (where the information sign is) along Banana Straight, around Monk's Corner and onto The Shelf before struggling up The Wall and around the 135° corner and down into the remains of The Hole. This had taken me quite a way past the cache but that didn't matter, I was enjoying the old memories.

Quasar, my huge thanks for putting this cache here. Otherwise, I would probably never have know that part of the Templestowe Hill Climb still exists.

24-Nov-12
Nice bit of history that............easy find after an enjoyable little hill walk. TFTC

10-Nov-12
Climbed the hill using a goat track from the info board. After finding the cache, we walked down the hill using the old race track, it gave us a good impression of the crazy angle that the cars had to drive up.

28-Oct-12
Nice stroll out with geoson, he was a bit disappointed there we no cars racing today, happy with the find though.tftc

29-Sep-12
This was an "interesting" cache for us. We went to as close as where we could drive to the coords (up the hill) and started down the hill, thinking this doesn't seem right. After the recent rain it was bit slippery, a bit too slippery! So after a mishap we decided to chuck it in - no cache is worth getting hurt for, especially for Ali at the moment! So we went back down the hills to get Swagman' Repose. And promptly found the sign with the required information to solve this one. Interesting history!! So back up the hill we go to get the cache. Not sure where original co-ords were sending us, but glad to have the cache, despite the frustration.

29-Sep-12
To climb a hill hey? Not me, no thanks, that is one cool story but one shocker of a hill. We had some issues with the published co-ords but after almost giving up we found the information needed to find GZ and found the cache.

25-Sep-12
What a fabulous hill, so steep. I would hate to drive up or down it. A great multi, worth a favorite point. Thanks Quasar. Took TB

Great Fathers day wall with the family, including teams Namel and Kash Price. Took periscope and Pokemon card, left fox, balloon and green deer.

The Bananas trekked off to search for this cache using the clues provided by the signs. Both Bananas read the information, but B1 had the wrong number of come back tours. We headed off with wrong co-ords. It's a shame we had to climb the hill twice! Where was that mountain climbing gear? Anyway, this warmed us up for other hill climbs in the day. B1 owes B2 an ice cream over this discrepancy. The loveliest moments of geo caching is seeing nature and animals. We frightened a mob of kangaroos on our first climb. They were specular. The history of this course is amazing too. Who would have ever thought that a race course, so hilly, was made through paddocks in the outer suburbs. Amazing. Thanks Quasar for imparting this little know history to us non-petrol heads. Both bananas found this.

Cleaned out the cache, took out all the old mouldy crap, dried out log book and info sheet, and put it all with a few new things and a new log book in a brand new sistema container which should hopefullyl keep the contents drier now. Also dropped off Megan's Bug TB.

Parked at the top of the hill and walked down to WP1 which was fine, but i knew i would have to walk back up to the car. Its such a steep hill! Good luck if you try and ride a bike, maybe the Tour 'de France is more your thing! Cache is fine, albeit the log is damp. Easy multi, TFTC.

Been meaning to deviate from the Mullum Mullum Trail to do this one for some time now. Today was the day. Found at 15:30.
I was trying to picture where the course would have gone before the houses were built and obviously it wasn't all up hill but it would have made for an interesting challenge when trying to do it as fast as possible. The phrase "to hit the wall" would have had special meaning for the drivers of these cars especially for those with underpowered vehicles.
TNLNSL. Incidentally the log is still wet - I drained what water I could out of the box. TFTC.

Three months since the last visit, which makes me think that geocachers don't go for interesting history. Sure motorsports are un-PC but "The Wall" is really amazing. I'd love to try to drive my car up that thing.
The cache innards are still damp but that adds to the atmospheric nature of this cache.
