A piece of cache was waiting for us on this summit. Beautiful area, we have made a great 2-days walk here and we (me for sure) loved this place. TFTC!
After doing Tussock and Tarns we wanted to head to the summit and used the waypoints for this cache as a guide to the top. As we passed the listed coordinates we thought we'd have look on the off chance there was something left of the cache.
The container is still in place (though not in great condition) along with all of the essential items (log book, pencil etc) so we'll log this as a find. Great views from the GZ and a really nice walk up. From here we went to the summit and back down the 'proper track'. The Team Chelmo track up the south face was much more enjoyable than the steep drop down the ridge.
A shame this one has been archived we really enjoyed it, hopefully one day another one will be placed up here.

After finding "Tussock and Tarns" I thought half the work was done, Boy was I wrong! the Summit was hard work, wading through tussock, bog and boulders. Rediguana and I slowly had our way up to the top while Grandalf and Smooth-hound lead the way. Spotted a couple a deer on the way up and a flock of sheep remains on the way down. When we reached the GZ the forward party were trying to assemble the cache contents so the cache was easy to find. With such great weather we got magnificent views from the summit of the Canterbury Plains and as far afield as Mount Cook which made the climb worthwhile. We stayed at the summit for a while to enjoy the views, take heaps of photos and have lunch. We then followed the directions of Grandalf our unofficial guide back the the 'Bus stop" where we had left most of our unneeded gear to collect. The trip back was easier aside from being all downhill we stay above the tall tussock and tarns thanks to Grandalf. TFTC

Well, this was a real mission to get to! In the end 4 of our group of 6 made it to the top. Started this morning at Woolshed Creek hut, and made our way up to Tussocks and Tarns. Then the real mission started as we waded the tussocks and hopped the rocks to the top. Man that was hard going. Also saw a couple of deer just 80-100m away as we were near the top of the gully. Continued the grunt up, and finally caught up with the two mountain goats from our party at GZ. Absolutely stunning day, and a fantastic view from here. We had a brief snack at the trig, and then headed all the way back down the Rhyolite track to the carpark. Wow my legs are going to be tender tomorrow Cheers Gav [7433] (photo to come when I get it off my phone, although it is on my Facebook page already!)
It was a perfect day in the mountains - but boy did it get hot up there. Our group of 6 keen cachers left Woolshed Creek Hut, and dumped packs at the BusStop, then visited Tussock and Tarns, then four of us went on up to the summit. It's a good walk, but two of us moved a bit quicker, and almost broke into a run over the last 20m. Guess who was one of them. We found the cache contents scattered around - obviously by keas, after some muggles had found the cache last December, signed the log, but didn't cover it again with enough rocks to deter the vandal birds. They would have had great fun cracking open the snaplock container - probably took them all of 10min!! Dried out the logbook, and rebagged it in snaplock, burying it under the old lid, and a load of stones. Photo below shows four very sweaty cachers at the cache site. Thanks and cheers from Grandalf(1911)
After Tussock and Tarns became a bit of a slog through the tussock and bogs heading cross country forever upwards. Then it became an interesting "stair climb" over the myriad stones placed strategically to make life interesting. As we neared the cache there were no words spoken but gradually, subtlety, the walking speed increased as a couple of "old bulls" competed to get there. It became a bit of an all out race and only Grandalf and SmoothHound know who actually got there first. We soon found the cache as it was strewn all over the place and not in cover. We figured that it had been found and not put back under the stones and Keas later discovering it. I had a spare ziplock bag and we dried the bits out while we went to the summit, replacing the cache on the way back. A brilliant place for a cache and great company. The weather was perfect and a place I will certainly visit again. Outstanding
Approached top of Mt Somers from south (Staveley) on a most glorious day and had no trouble finding cache .

Magic place for a Geocache and a most beautiful day to find it (4/03/09)
Thanks for setting it up

Climbed to the top from the Sharplin Falls car park. Beautiful sunny day with great views but made going up hard work. Once at the top it was an easy find. TFTC. Photo is looking over to Mt Peel.
Well the plan was to come and visit the cache today after a group asault on Helms Deep yesterday. With a few people missing and those of us left still keen on going up had to admit defeat before we started with hot norwesters blowing through the camp site. Never mind it gives us a chance to get together again (and maybe even get a bit fitter first).
Spare afternoon, climb mountain .
GC under a metre of snow, but the walk was well worth it. Maybe when I'm back in January

fantastic spot, great place for a cache. Weather a bit cloudy, so not so good for the photos. + purple sparkly toy, - bike tool (great!)
I came up here today for several reasons, There was a coin sitting at "Tussock & Tarns" that I retrieved to move along, I had some ATC cadets that wanted a challenging walk and I have just recieved a coin from the States that I wanted to show the Canterbury Plains. It was a really warm day for the climb today which lead to a bit of perspiration being produced It was a shame about all the burn offs on the plains, it meant the view wasn't as good as it normally is Still a nice walk and meet up with Ridders76 on our decent/ his accent.

Given the haet of day and lack of water when I seen people appear I thought of a mirage but no it was team chelmo. The burn off on the plains meant black skies. Brillant views the other way of the inland mountains. After a gruelling clmib up the decent was almost too much, never had to take rest breaks on the down ward leg before! Took Photos, left sweat.
Great I was the FTF on this one. I got there before Grandalf and that’s got to be a record. I must admit I took the long way around. starting from the woolshed creek car park and made my way to the rock waypoint turning right to take the mt Somers walk track that take you around to the sharplin fall car park side. From there a nice steep hike and ridge line walk to the summit. After finding the cache and being the FTF ( sorry Grandalf I had to say it again) I made my way down following the waypoints. I wanted to spend a bit more time up there but I knew the weather was going the change and it did. I made it down from the summit and just started the second descent when it came across. Covering the summit and my way down but this is a well marked track and it wasn’t long before I was back at the car park. Great hike and great spot for a cache.
