Looks like it is gone the clue was very explicit and the comments suggest it was an easy find, no cache at the clue site and GPS seems spot on pointing to the clue.

Murphy's Law being what it is, despite the quiet location and it being early on a Saturday morning, I just had to be kneeling down at the cache just as a 4x4 went past (didn't hear it approaching because of the wind.) Surprised they didn't drive off the road given the amount of rubbernecking that was going on. Have decided that next time this sort of thing happens I'm going to pretend that I'm doing CPR/mouth-to-mouth on some small animal roadkill and really give them something to stare at! Gorgeous building. Pity it isn't still a bad boys home as I can think of a few I've met in a professional capacity that could be incarcerated there. Thank God I only teach girls now!

1547. What a fabulous place - a magnificent building. I just had to look up the history while logging the find.

In 1857 Mr. William Dansey purchased from the original owner, Mr John Taylor, “Otekaiteâ€, the massive station that later evolved into Campbell Park Estate.

Mr Dansey was born in Wiltshire, England in 1811 and came to New Zealand on the “Pudsey Dawson†in 1854. During his occupation of the station he had the first house built in 1861 (this house still remains on the estate, standing below the cliff). Dansey’s name is perpetuated in Dansey’s Pass which gave access to Ryeburn Station to the south. In 1861 Mr Dansey sold the property consisting of 29,925 acres to the Hon. Robert Campbell.

The “Castle†was built by the Hon. Robert Campbell in 1876 using craftsmen he imported from Scotland. The Campbell homestead was the first building in New Zealand to be recognised as a Castle.

Campbell made use of the areas plentiful natural resources such as the stone used to construct the castle. Campbell utilised the natural terraces and introduced an extensive tree planting program to help turn the wilderness into a majestic homestead.

The Campbell Castle was renowned throughout the country for its social calendar hosting grand balls and elaborate hunting parties.

Robert Campbell died in Dunedin on 10th December 1889 at the age of forty-six, and his wife followed him 4 months later. They had no children. His uncle Robin Campbell succeeded Robert and took up residence in 1902. Then in 1908 “Otekaike†was sold to the New Zealand Board of Education.

From 1908 until 1987 the facility grew and evolved as a school for gifted boys.

In 1988 Campbell Park was purchased by its present owners and began its transformation into the multi-faceted estate that stands today.

An easy find on the way to Queentown, second for the day

Just Sir Rick and Pippi out caching today - the Lady was working; to help pay our petrol money. LOL

Another easy find, our Etrex pointed at the exact location, as I pulled up the car beside it to obscure our activity.

TNLN -

My, what a piece of architecture that place is.

Would make an awesome Private Homestead.

Cheers
