Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Logs

04-Jun-18
I parked at the entrance to Honeyeater Track; then walked up hill. It's a work-site up there, with heaps of mulch. I was crossing to the trig when a truck appeared, but I was ignored. I found the trig, took the photograph and then crossed back to the forest before more workers appeared; then back downhill to my car. TFTC.

04-Jun-17
I parked in the conservation park below and made the climb straight up the hill to GZ
Certainly wasn't expecting to come across the enormous composting piles just before I got to the trig!
Photos of the survey plate and what has replaced the trig point were taken then it was off down the hill again before the sun set [^]
Cheers & TFT exercise!

18-Feb-17
I trekked upo from a gate at the bottom of the hill and walked up and around the 280 metres to the cache. However when i got to the top of the hill i found a massive council landfill site and the cache is only about 75 metres from this site. The cache is safe. I did a quick resection and scratched around with a stick right on top of the survey plate and uncovered for others to see.

30-Oct-16
There was no sign of the actual physical trig as seen in earlier photos, but the foundations are clearly marked with blue poles.

I should have taken in easy on the walk up from Evans Drive, as I was knackered by the time I got to the top.

06-Apr-16
This morning we visited the Heathfield Area Trig Point which was about 80m from the road. When we got there we were surprised to see a bulldozer and truck working nearby, probably creating an access road for a communications tower. Two photos have been added to the Gallery showing the blue Trig Point markers and a third concrete pad. Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.

Found the trig and survey mark (pictured) after a short stroll up from Evans Road and Mark Mitchell Conservation Park.

31-Jul-10
A nice walk straight up the hill from Evans drive to find this forlorn trig. Interesting that not only is it on its side, its been dragged a few metres from its base plate as well, I wonder why?

08-Mar-10
Found after surveying Mark Oliphant Conservation Park for an upcoming multi cache. I also spotted a couple of roos near the TP.

23-Sep-09
Entered via Sir Mark Oliphant Conservation Park and no fences or gates to hinder the march. The Trigpoint appears to actually be on Heathfield Dump land. The old Trig is now laying on it's side and no longer a landmark. The kangaroos are rather tame for the area.
Cheers from the Posspet Boys
