Description

Blue Mountain TS998

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Blue Mountain.

Serial number is: TS998.

Last Inspected on: June, 1975.

Elevation is: 726 metres.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Logs

23-Mar-24
Popped by after a bushwalk on and off the Lawson Ridge fire trail.

02-Jan-23
Came in the morning before the heat kicked in – a nice short walk up to this point from the gate – a interesting out of the way spot & a trig in good shape - thanks

We had some spare time before lunch after a trip to Flat Top, so headed east on the highway in search of some more finds. We had just found a pair of GC caches closer to the highway when we noted this wasn't far up the road. We parked a few hundred metres back at the NPWS gate. The trig is in great condition....

13-Jun-20
Was on a walk in the area and we came to this trig so thought I would log it.

01-Aug-19
MrT was doing a recce with D for SES training, so I went along to do some birdwatching. It's not that far from home, but I hadnt been to the end of this road before.
With the trig name "Blue Mountains" it was a trig we had to do!
Parked at the NP gate, and only a 400m reasonably east walk to the trig.
A beautiful sunny and warm morning, and some birds around too. TFTT

16-Jul-17
The last time I had been out to Blue Mountain trig, was just before 5pm, Friday, 25 November, 1983.
This time I was down from Taree to get a few more Waymarked Trigs, so that I could get over x 100 Visits - on top of the 120+ that I had already Published there. Nice to see a fully intact trig, and nicely painted too! Photographed @ 1351, Sunday, 16 July, 2017.
I missed out by a month, on getting yet another 'Unloved' trig, but that is fine!

17-Aug-16
Have ridden the fire trail quite a few times out to the end. Its a good MTB ride and even better now that the fire trail has been recently graded. We were on foot today however and though we'd been here before it was nice to be back at such a pleasant view point - this time to log the Trig.

Top cache...because this was a nice walk. Great one for the family. I liked the spiral approach to the top. Just another great spot in the Blue Mountains.

07-Sep-13
Parked at the end of Queens Road, at sign, though probably could have saved a few hundred metres walk as the (second) gate was some way along. Still, a perfect early Spring blue-sky day and an enjoyable walk, with the track closing in with new growth. A side path to the this Trig but continuing will loop around nonetheless.

26-Nov-12
This was my "mid-commute constitutional" this evening. I parked at the end of Queens Rd and followed the footpad from there around till it intersected with the North Lawson Fire Trail, then followed that back to Binnowee Drive before taking the slightly overgrown fire trail up to the trig.

31-Oct-10
At the end of Lawson's Queens Road, I drove onwards via Binnowee Drive. Then when this road seemed to end, I pushed the GeoBuru ever forward via a modest fire trail. And finally, I came to the expected locked gate, about 250 metres from GZ.

A clear trail led further and then I saw high ground rising off to the right, and a little side trail that ran towards where my GPSr wanted to go. Finally -- there was the 1973 trigpoint, poised on a wonderful vantage point, and surrounded by bush flowers! I was very pleased to be able to inspect it closely.

Will soon upload some photos.

This one so close to home and unfound by us became our 500th geocache found.

The view we certainly worth the walk that I convinced the whole family to do.
