Description

Gulgong TS5296

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Gulgong.

Serial number is: TS5296.

Last Inspected on: No Data.

Elevation is: 526 metres.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills and this one is no exception. Located on a hill overlooking the town of Gulgong, it provides a fabulous panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. There is a road right to the top and you could park right next to the pillar if you wanted. The black disc on the top has gone which seems to be pretty common on TPs that are easily accessible.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Camping in Gulgong and found this when I came up to do some flirting with my love. Very Happy

25-Oct-20
Passing through Gulgong after a few days in the Wallumbungles and thought I'd grab a trig or two. Dreary, rainy day so views aren't great today.

11-Oct-20
Nice views on this beautiful morning up on the hill. Trig has seen better days unfortunately although it has not been vandalised and still retains the instrument blanking plate and nameplate. TFTC.

Mate of mine was keen to be shown around the area so we drove up the lookout. Trig was quickly spotted and required photos taken (will be uploaded when I pull them off my phone).

Thanks!

#GA3301 - 11:35; It was an early start to day two of the LuckyL10n, Sol de lune journey or destination tour as we take the long way to Bathurst via Dunedoo, Gulgong, Mudgee and a few smaller towns as well. Collected a few caches close to Dubbo to start the day before hitting a few more along the highway as we headed to Dunedoo for a couple more and then on to Gulgong. Picked up another in the town before heading along to Flirtatious Drive for this trig. I wonder how it got its name? Think A nice easy drive by too! found this trig while looking for a multi!

19-Sep-16
Found on the last day of our 3 day roadtrip into the Mudgee area. Day 2 marred with rain and sickness, but we rose to the challenge for the drive home. We found this trig accidentally, whilst chasing a multi in the area. Lucky find! Great views from up here.

07-Jan-16
Easy access to this one. Nice panoramic views from Flirtation Hill.

Found it with hubby/ MrGT today whilst on a couple's trip to the Mudgee wineries.

12-Apr-15
My only trig find on our drive to Hill End/Mudgee/Gulgong/Windeyer. And a very easy one, as you can drive right up to the trig.

13-Sep-14
If not for the GCA trig listing I would not have found myself on a sunny spring afternoon at this spectacular view - and one is left wondering how many Gulgong visitors miss out on this gem.

An all pristine painted trig with nameplate attached, no vanes, but a bird dropping (it seemed) coating on the top plate.

06-Nov-13
For the first time ever as I drove up I found a trig point in use! There was a man parked there with a laser reflector set up on the old base and on the phone. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to get a photo before he put it back in the car, and went and screwed the black plate back onto the top. Not sure where his mate was using the reflector. He packed up and drove off while I was getting the camera, so I just had to photo the iPhone sitting on the top.

30-Aug-13
Found just before dark while on the hunt for another nearby.
Nice little bonus trig in the car park.

Great views from here over Gulgong and surrounding areas.

This is called Flirtation Hill so it seemed a great spot to stop at on the way home!

This was a real gem to discover! What a fabulous view from up here and you can drive right to it. I've changed the rating to a 1/1 to indicate it's ease and also the description.

Top Spot!
