Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

14-Jun-20
Took our visiting Brazilian for a wander up the mountain in search of cold... definitely found some!

21-Nov-19
Visited here while on a lap of Tasmania with the missus and friends. Not ideal conditions to take in the view ... it so blowy up here and the conditions were hazy ... but amazing all the same.

15-Sep-19
Came up Mt Wellington today, great view . Thanks to Geocaching Australia

15-Sep-19

17-Aug-19
Thought we would come for a drive up here today. Lots of people.

24-May-19
An amazing place to visit, but the clouds were rolling in and the wind blasts from the South was freezing.
Got to the top and he said ‘how come I always gotta try and get down :-/‘
Thanks for sharing this interesting place.

10-May-19
Found with Mtrax whilst up here! No views today due to low cloud and it was freezing cold!

10-May-19
Brrr, wind chill factor in thinking it's below zero, not much of a view today, but worth the trip

24-Mar-19
Could not pass this one up now, could we - with the stunning views available today. Great place!

24-Feb-19
Stunning views from up here this afternoon. Love coming up here! TFTTP!

14-Feb-19
Wow! Windy (Mt) Wellington! 6C and a roaring wind meant it was difficult just to get the phone out to take the pic. Survived somehow! Then there's the guy in T-shirt and shorts...

18-Jan-19
In Tassie with the family. Visited the Mt today. Very cloudy but fun to be up here.

14-Jan-19

Visited on a grim day. Was lucky to get up this mountain today haha. I’m very keen to return to this state. Thanks for the cache Smile

31-Aug-18
Was in Hobart visiting my Aunty and decided I wanted to head up to Mt Wellington for a look. Enjoyed the drive, however once I reached the pinnacle, the winds and clouds rolled in. It was SUPER windy, frosty and all in all, super cold. Took a happy snap as close to the trig as I could get because of the wet, snow covered rocks. thanks for the listing Laughing

05-Apr-18
This view blew me away.
Thanks for bring me here and trigpoint.

10-Mar-18
Beautiful spot, and beautiful weather today. What a drive up, that ascent doesn't let up.....

28-Jan-18
Found on our holiday to Hobart. After a very slow and scary drive up the hill (our hire car was too bulky for our liking and the views from the cliffs terrified us), we finally arrived at the top, where we were pleased to get out of the car to a much cooler temperature and breeze. The views of Hobart - surrounded by views of the column rocks - were absolutely stunning and was definately one of the greatest spectacles that we've ever seen! Once a photo of the trig was grabbed, standing on the rocks and looking out onto Hobart was a beautiful experience to remember. TFTC GCA! Clan CerberusClan CerberusClan Cerberus

As a 'local', I've lost count of the number of times I've been to the pinnacle here, and had my photo taken at the trig point. Today another visit was added as I pretended to be a tourist with my son and his girlfriend who is visiting from the mainland. We drove to the summit and I then went off to do geocaching stuff whilst they did touristy stuff. My phone decided not to work on the summit (it's on its last legs) so I had to borrow my sons phone, and I had no idea what buttons I was pressing, hence the screwed up face.

A cold windy day, but we still made the time to take in the surrounding views of Mount Wellington. There were lots of people and just had to take them in the photo a well. The longer we waited for muggles to go away more would appear. MrGT54 is in the forfront of the photo. Spectacular views. TFTC Clan Minotaur

15-Jan-18
First GCA trig in Tassie! Had to make it a good one and Mt Wellington was always going to be a winner. It was a lovely 17 degrees when we landed and the temps dropped as we accented to 11 but with the wind it felt much colder. Plenty of people on the roads and traipsing all over the trig and rocks at the top, but it was all good. Trig touched, photos taken, and points to score in the States of the Nation game!

11-Jan-18
To access this spot was quite an athletic achievement for this septuagenarian. It took two people to assist me up here so I could take the photo, with my iPad, which is also my GPS. Then it took another three people to help me back down again, with Muggle Hubby assisting from above. It was quite tricky to take the photo and include the little navigation disk in it. Hopefully it meets with your approval.
It was an incredible view from up here and well worth the exercise involved to achieve it.

17-Sep-17
Forgot to log this one. 3 of the 5 T’s Went up the Mountain as eldest geodaughter needed photos for College assignment. Cold, windy and snowy.

16-Jul-17
A quick detour up the mountain and another trig located, so cold and windy that I decided that if any other caches were up here to be found they would be found another day.

14-Jul-17
extremely windy and cold up on top of the mountain today! My son will be going back down by mountain bike while I take the easy way in the hire car! I don't use GPSr any more, just smartphone and I am not a fan of the selfie so have added my pic of the trig. TFTC.

27-May-17
It was apparently +2° degrees but with the wind chill it was freezing. I don't think I ever been this cold. I did my good deed for the day by helping 3 lasses visiting Australia from the UK by taking their photographs at the top of this trig station.

07-Feb-17
On a glorious afternoon like today, the trig point was packed but I was eventually able to get the required shots at 17:30. Being on my own though, I had to grab a selfie while on the way back down. What wonderful views. Very Happy

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

25-Dec-16
Up on Mt Wellington with the family on a weeks holiday in Tasmania. This was the first caches we spotted, mainly because it's so obvious as to what it is. A nice trigpoint to find on a gorgeous day up on the mountain.

25-Dec-16
Up on Mount Wellington for some touristy things and we found this trigpoint. Nice.

29-Nov-16
Decided to take a drive up here tonight to grab a couple of caches. I really should have turned back, as the it was the thickest fog/cloud I've been in, or driven in for a long while. So, unfortunately, there's no view to see, nor photograph. I have though, attached a pic of the GPSr at the base of the NE leg. NO muggles though. Being a local, I can come back anytime for the view/s!

31-Jan-16
Travelling around Australia and spending a few months in Tasmania.

Today was about attending the morning event.

After the event Mr Felix and Mr Dunmowin joined the walking group across the cool mountain conditions discovering caches and snakes, whilst Mrs Felix and Mrs Dunmowin joined with Goodlook for a warm girlie day of caching, giggles, coffee shops, sailing, river views and sliding.

All had a great fun day with new friends, just what we love about Geocaching.

The boys stopped here after the walk. Took time to take plenty of photos

A 10 day trip to Tasmania with a lot more caching then initially expected, but I enjoyed every minute of it! This was one of the many caches I found and enjoyed. Can't wait to get back here and do it all over again, there are so many great places in Tasmania.

This was a "3 for one" meal deal for us today as the GC allowed us to claim a challenge cache we had "pre-found" in Qld. Can't beat that - or the view, which as always was magical. The weather today even more so - a very rare sunny and _wind-free!!_ day on top.

14-Oct-15
found with Chriswhite62 during a day of caching in Hobart.

11-Oct-15
It was not windy up here today which was very unusual. I carefully scrambled up the rocks to get this picture taken by Carlin&sondra but no worries about being blown off today

02-Jul-15
My first find for GCA Dancing We visited this trig point while on holiday in Tasmania. It was freezing here and it started to snow while on the Mountain which qas great and exciting for the kiddies. We loved it up here. The climb was a little tricky and my hands were freezing while ai ook tjis snap of meyat the trig point.

Thanks for this Trig cache

15-Mar-15
This is so worth the trip up here for the views. Fabulous!

17-Dec-14
Zal and I spent 10 days touring Tasmania and it was the most amazing trip ever! We got engaged at Cradle Mountain and saw so many wonderful things. Even the weather played nice most of the time Razz Thanks for the hunt, it is always tricky logging lots of holiday finds so apologies for the cut'n'paste log, Zal included more details Wink

17-Dec-14
This time... I got my view. Last visit was in July 2007, in a whiteout, on a pushbike. Needless to say we had the place to ourselves then Wink This time with the fiancee in tow instead of a crazy mate we got great views of the city and surrounds. Still chilly for summer mind you and rather windy but cant complain! Cheers from Sydney.

13-Dec-14
Boy, I can't believe I didn't log this one!!! We were just talking about how our youngest son is now the age that our eldest son was when we holidayed in Tasmania....and I realised that I'd not logged this fantastic trig point! My apologies for the belated log, but a happy snap is attached. TFTC Geocaching Australia

24-Oct-14
You cant beat Mt Wellington for a great view of Hobart....if it is clear enough to see it. Like most locals, we have been up here is sun, rain, hail wind and snow! TFTC

14-Oct-14
Visited during our Silver Anniversary Jaunt to Tasmania.
We didn't manage to get up here on our Honeymoon Tour in 1989 but it was most definately on our "must do" list this time around!

28-Sep-14
Shocked wow strong windy on top... Clapping AWESOME VIEW from gz.. thanks for have me here... Enjoyed today...

23-Sep-14
Stopped by on family holiday. I'd not loaded trig co-ords for TAS, but didn't really need them here anyway. Very Happy

19-Sep-14
Very windy and cold... 6 deg!! beautiful view from GZ.. enjoyed wander around for short... Thanks. ClappingClapping

13-Aug-14
me and the baby bomber were up there on the 13 8 2014 to do other GC caches and this trigpoint was noticed, so a photo was taken to have proof of the visit

Since I'm going to start looking at GCA caches now I'd better start with logging the ones I've done in the past first. I did this one while I was up the mountain grabbing a few others.

Great view everytime I come up here.

08-Nov-13
Two for one with this trigpoing! GC and GCA Very Happy

No views for us today, but very typical Mt Wellington cloud and snow!

31-Aug-13
ST90 added to trig point name

19-May-13
My first geocache find was 'Trigpoint Scenes 1' on 21 March 2004, so it seems a little funny to be logging this again - but fun too. I had a bit of a different perspective of Mt Wellington as it was ICY, but we were drawn up the Mountain to try to help another cacher out. I must say climbing up the leeward side of the trig was the smart way to go. Oddly enough, that was even the way I went.

04-May-13
A little colder than what we are used to - a muggle friend brought us up to this wonderful vantage point but we couldn't see very far today

27-Jan-13
Came to Hobart on Saturday, after visiting Snuva we thought we might go up the mountain, but couldn't see the top, so decided against it. Same thing on the Sunday morning, but then by Sunday afternoon, the mountain top was clearly visible, so up we went. Definitely needed a jacket though. Very cold wind! First thing I did was make for this Trig point. Love this mountain and its views.

13-Jan-13
Flew into Hobart from Sydney early in the morning with a group of others. After being screwed on a rental car for 6hrs we decided to put said car through it's paces and we figured what better way then Mt Wellington. Well we got out on the top and first thing we noticed was the icy wind. While the rest went and got jumpers (I was too lazy to pull me bag apart to find one) I started to climb up to the trig wearing thongs shorts and a shirt. Big mistake, by the time I reached the trig it was snowing.

30-Dec-12
On the mountain looking for bingo caches and just had to go to the top to do the trig point. TFTC

21-Nov-12
We stumbled across this trig when we went to Mt Wellington to do the earthcache there. We initially climed up to the trig to log it for GCA, and then had to do it again, later, to take a different kind of shot for the Virtual, as we had forgotten to do it. By that stage the weather had turned foul, it had started to rain, and the wind brought flecks of ice that burrowed into our cheeks.

04-Aug-12
I think this was definitely the windiest point at the pinnacle - GeoMum and I stood up there just long enough to do a 360C rotation and get GeoDad to take a happy snap for the log.

Found with Sylken during my excellent Tassie Vacation. Smile

TFTC.

04-Aug-12
A great day up the mountain. Bright and sunny and magnificent views all round. A nice, easy cache to log. Visiting with geodaughter Karopi. TFTC [^]

23-Jun-12
It was cold up here today!

02-Jun-12
A mighty chilly day up here, as the photo shows. TFTC

11-Apr-12
It was freezing, but we found a few caches on the way up and down. The views were also spectacular.

03-Jan-12
Lost count of the number of times I have been up here. The first time was back in 11/19/2008 with princess Essica on a 36 hr trip. Still love the views and am sure there will be more trips up here.
JABs.

23-Dec-11
Warm day up here today

12-Dec-11
Even though I love not too far away, this is the first time I have been to the top of the mountain in a very long time. It was a nice mild day but the wind chill on top of the mountain made me go blue in no time! Lovely views no matter what the weather.

This is one of the easiest trig points I have done. A nice rocky path to the top makes it achievable by most.

Have attached some photos.
TFTC.

25-Sep-11
Logging this a mere 8 1/2 months late Smile

A foggy day, so not much of a view, but the geokids loved playing with the snow remnants. TFTVC!

13-Sep-11
Lovely day for a trip up the mountain. Such a beautiful view - we are so lucky to have this landscape.

28-Aug-11
Came across the trig while finishing a series of caches. The day was extremely windy and cold, which made it difficult to take a photo with the phone. (Used phone GPS).

24-Jul-11
A cold, sunny day - with perfect visibility, after the last two days had been quite cloudy across the top of the mountain. Climbed the slippery icy rocks to the summit, while my photographer stayed down near the car to snap the photo. A great location, we are so please that we did the drive up here today while we were in Hobart. Cheers!

16-Jun-11
Blowing a gale and with wind chill down to -6.9 while visiting. All the recent snow almost gone now. Off to Mona now for another interesting experience!

28-Apr-11
A beautiful day on the mountain out and about with whitewebbs

28-Apr-11
Great view on a lovely day. Thanks for getting us up here. Out and about with Tassie Trekkers.

17-Apr-11
Spotted this one while watching The Biggest Loser. No camera or GPS available at the time. Very Happy Well - it was only 4 metres away - on my TV Dancing

03-Apr-11
Was one of the coldest places I have ever been.

20-Mar-11
Found in the company of Mtbikeroz while on our amazing and memorable Tazzie trip.
Very cold, wind chill made it worse and the fog was amazing.

20-Mar-11
A COLD & WINDY & FOGGY Day at the top. Brrrrrrr. Found with MtnLioness on our Tazzie trip.

20-Mar-11
We are here in Tasmania for a couple of weeks holiday from Perth, WA. Logging this very popular trig point. Photo to follow when we get home.
