Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

What an Epic Walk.

Had today free and decided I wanted to firstly get a trig and secondly try and get a bit fitter for the upcoming walking in the ACT.

Set off at 11.15 after having a chat to the resident across the road. He had told me it would be a 6 hour return walk, but you are ok to jump the gate and walk up through the property. That concerned me, so I touched base with Oldsaint and he confirmed it should be a two - three hour walk. Feeling better, I set off.

The walk started fairly level, but I knew it would turn nasty looking at the top of the mountain in the distance. It looked imposing. The track was very wide and would have been easy to drive up, if a key could be found.

Got to the second gate, and again had to jump this one and set off up the track, with the track steadily becoming steeper.

Arriving a large gate that was open, there was a choice in tracks, off course I managed to take the wrong track and after 100 metres I realised I needed to back track and go to the right. This track was very steep and I had to stop and rest my legs for a short period. Got towards the crest of the hill and the sky showing through the trees as I approached the crest gave me the push to go on without another rest.

Followed this track right around past the trig to the taped track back up to the trig. In effect, I had circled the trig. This last 200 metres was pretty tough, basically, it was straight up going from cairn to cairn. Then I reach the plateau and saw the last 50 metre climb to the trig. At this stage I could see the trig, but just the one more effort required.

Pushed up to the trig and immediately sat and rested while looking at the brilliant view, even though a poor weather day, all the way to Mt Wellington.

Had a rest and then started the walk back down after taking photos.

Back to the car at 1.45, so the trip took me 2 hours 30 minutes in total. According to my watch I had 2 hours an 6 minutes walking, covering 9.53 kms and burning 6864 kilojoules. My watch says I gain 461 metres

Thought I would go get a couple of trigs in this area. Took 2 hours return in the sleet/snow. Awesome views when the clouds cleared.

Mr W and Mr T from Tassie Trekkers headed to Buckland to do 3 caches in the Bluff River Gorge and decided to do the climb to this trig on the way back home. The last 200 metres was a tough climb but the views were amazing.

Had been to Triabunna to log "TDS Girls PP", stopped off at Orford and then thought I'd look at this cache if possible.
Found the access and started the trek to the top.
Passed some Forestry workers on the way who told me to be careful 'cos there was a fire up there.
Luckily there were only few flames and a bit of smoke!
Sainted the cache at 1605hrs.
For me it was a two hour and twenty minutes round trip with a stop at the top.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

After visiting 3 houses in the nearby area and finding no one home I hoped the sign referred to the quarry and not to the road. It was a pleasant 40 minute walk up the road then another 5 minute up to the trig point via a well marked track where you get lovely views of the Coal River Valley.
