Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Elevation: 189.5

Record Number: 409600075

Moved slightly from the original position as there are 2 trigs points within about 10 metres of each other on the summit with one of them being Centenary Tower.

I originaly tried to find the main trig back in July 2009, and discovered that it is located in or on Centenary Tower. After a recent visit to the Tower I discovered that there is no tourist access to roof of the tower where I suspect the trig 's brass disc is located. So this cache has has been relocated slightly from S37° 50.419' E140° 45.370'  to the secondary trig's location which is what everyone else has already logged.

The trig is shown as 'Browne' on the maps of the area so the name has been updated.

Some locals do this climb daily, once in a blue moon is enough for me. I have been up here a couple of times before but today is the first time I took notice of the views south to the sea.

Thoroughly enjoyed the short but steep hike to this trig. 360 degree fantastic views.

Nice and cool today after some of the hot weather we have had recently...and more forecast from tomorrow.

#GA1949 - 16:20; Day three of a caching mission to Victoria with Sol de lune. After collecting more than 100 finds yesterday, today's mission is to travel west through Ararat, Stawell, Horsham, Dimboola and Nhill to Bordsertown, then on to Naracoorte and Mount Gambier before returning to Creswick via Lake Bolac, caching along the way. We had finally reached Mt Gambier after around 10 hours on the road. After snapping the CORS, we headed up the hill for this trig. Once we parked the geomobile the start wasn't too bad, but the last 500 metres was a bugger Shocked It seemed to take forever, but it wasn't actually too long before we reached the summit and had the pictures snapped. That's a walk and a half up from the car park. I think walker would find the last 200 metres rather tough. However we did get there and grab our photos.

Thanks for the trig. The views are worth the walk.

Today in very windy and sometimes rainy conditions, we walked up the steep track yo the Centenary Tower. Even on a poor weather day, the views from this location are impressive. Two photos have been added to the Gallery: the first of of Centenary Tower where the srvey point is a vertical line through the centre of the tower; and a survey marker adjacent to the tower with our GPS.

Over three years unfound? We were in Mt Gambier a few weeks ago on our SA odyssey and climbed the hill to the tower and did the little tour. The tower is the trig? But there's the marker and survey mark to one side? Photographed both.

Im sure I'm not the first to be here but I'm the first to log a find with GEOCACHING AUSTRALIA. It was a heart starting walk for me but the view is wonderful. There is a traditional cache nearby. This cache is the top of Mount Gambier.
