Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Mt Maroon climb today today – the weather was perfect. Quite a few others had the same idea, the car park was full. I started the climb upward then upward, then rocky upward. It was hard going. One of the most difficult climbs I’ve done. So dry and dusty too, making the track upwards easy to find. Finally made the summit and looked around for the remains of the trig. Found the bolt locations and etchings in the rock. Found these at three locations. I’m wondering if this used to be one of those framed trigs, like down at ACT. Shame its not still here. A trig would be the perfect accessory for this hill – it would really set her off.

Bloody awesome walk – grabbed two GC caches up here too. Sore knees now though.

I updated this cache with new DT rating, reflecting the difficult terrain, and the difficult search for the bolt locations on where the trig used to be. Nice to see a big cairn up here to mark the top.

So I’m logging this one 1224 days after my visit haha better late than never. Way back in early 2019 I was here after a great hike with great people. We ventured up the long way via the caves then around the back. It was a long day but an adventure to remember. Someone I met introduced me to Geocaching Australia and particularly Trig Points a few months after this visit. I have the required image and it’s finally time to log.

Unfortunately the structure is gone. All that remains are parts of the leg bases in the rock. An impressive cairn now takes its place.
Cheers

It was a nice day and a large group of us heading up this "hill" in search of caches.

There definitely wasn't much left of this trig point but there were still some signs of it's existence.

Great spot. Cheers!!

Once the group had reached the south peak, there was discussion that a trig point might be listed on GCA. Luckily someone followed this up once we reached the bottom again and so here we are Very Happy . A wonderful climb, stunning views and even a great spot to fly a kite if you're so inclined. Thanks

I was part of a group that reached both summits of Mt Maroon today and so far it is my highest ascent Very Happy We looked for the trig station, but could not find a trace of it except for an arrow scratched into the rock and the remains of a bolt. So glad to have discovered a love for mountain climbing LaughingClappingVery Happy TFTC.

Out with a big group.. and organised by Ruzzelz.. to climb good old Mt Maroon. We came upon this Trig in our travels. What a taxing climb.. certainly one of the toughest I have done.

Very happy to have gone up and down, and survived Razz

Visited the location along with herbz. Fourth time up here for ruzzelz. Although there is a cairn at GZ and spots where there has obviously been something fixed to the rock at sometime in the past we could not locate any clear signs of the trig station.

Not to worry this is a great location - that is why I just keep coming back each year. Dancing
