Description

Lyalls Inlet - Koo-Wee-Rup PM 73

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Using the web-based "Survey Marks Enquiry Service (SMES)", the details for this trigonometric station have been acquired.

We were heading to Melbourne and on the wrong side of the highway for this one. Didn't take long to find a place where we could legally do a uey though.
Photo taken from the highway as we weren't overly confident in the parking for the campervan.
Loved the beached boat nearby.
Thanks.

I had probably been past here in November 2014, for the "Project 81 Master Challenge" geocache. But that was at night time also. This time I was on my back to Silvan to stay over night there. I wondered across the very quiet South Gippsland Highway, and climbed the sandy bank. Took a few photos @ 2130, and then headed off.
A typical 'Victorian trig', with 'water pipes' except that this is a 'Tripod', and not a Quadrapod, like most I have seen south of the border. The four black vanes are not semi-circular, but rather a 'rhomboidal' shape, and braced against each other.
Also took a photo of the survey marker underneath the trig. Very Victorian! Very Happy

In the area for a couple days with my wife while she was attending an event associated with her hobby/passion, but I had a couple of hours where I could get a bit of caching in.

Second stop was another unloved trig....and a drive by at that. No problems and the required photo was soon in snapped.

28-Dec-13
Stopped by to 'grab' this one while on the way down to Cape P for a spot of R&R. I parked on the wrong side of the bridge Surprised and walked back in the heat for the shot at 11:10 despite the persistent protestations of the others in the car. Embarassed

Our 1st find with the new toy. Very Happy

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

There was very thick fog as we came up the highway from San Remo this morning. This provided a challenge to locate this trig point, especially as it was partially obscured by small trees. The photo added to the Gallery shows one of us next to the trig point. TFTC

Came past this one while in the area today on my motorbike.
A very cold winters morning so a quick stop to snap the photo and get going again.
Its amazing that this area is so flat that the top of a creek bank is the most prominent place to put a Trig.

i was going down to Phillip island for the holidays and saw this trigpoint but only realized what it was after a few kms so there is no pic Sad

On the way to Phillip Island we came across this. Dad parked on the other side of the river, and the only way across was back against a 3-laned highway. Shocked. First GCA cache as well

Found today on our drive to Inverloch, couldn't get too close as the grass was very wet and I started sinking in it. Glad I approached from the side I did, there was someone fishing at the river on the otherside of the hill who would have looked at me rather weird Laughing

Irontoad and I found this cache but didn't realise that it was a virtual cache so searched in the fading sunlight for the "cache that wasn't". TFTC Brick Wall

Thanks to me Smile for hiding this cache here today. Mr of The Mini Mob was with me as we headed to Phillip Island and when this one came up, it was a quick stop by the side of the road to snap the picture then we were on our way.
Took nothing, left nothing.

I been past here on several occasion and noted the trig marker. I was on my way down to Phillip Island today, so I thought I might as well stop off and get a picture so I could log it.

Driving past, we thought we could stop and get the quick snap of this trig point. Very cool, near a stream with plenty of people fishing.
