Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Chauffeuring a friend to a memorial service on a beach meant I was in range of some caches with time on my hands...

This was my main target for the afternoon... it seems that every time I've been in this vicinity, something has prevented me from visiting this Trig Point. On such a fine afternoon, I parked in a side street nearby, eschewing the local council's daylight robbery, and walked the tracks to the carpark this is situated near the end of.

Now, what fun is there to be had nearby?... aha! a pier to play beneath.

Having caught up with LuckyL10n it was time to head out of time for a couple of caches before nightfall and grab a couple of new dZ's. No problems here and the required photo was soon snapped.

Thanks for another trig....

#GA1786 - 14:45; In Melbourne for a few days to visit the geoteen, the geohoney and I headed out for some retail therapy while she was at work. After checking out some outdoor furniture, we stopped off for some caches on our way back to the city. This one was easily spotted on the approach and there was plenty of parking available today near GZ. Once the snap was in the can, we headed off for another one. Heading to Sandringham to see a patient today and I'd planned my travel in from Traralgon too well - I was able to spare an extra half an hour to detour this way, snap a picture of myself at this unusual trigpoint, and still be dead on time at my patient. Perfect! TFTC Geocaching Australia

Picking up some solved puzzles in the area with OzHockeyChick and lemmykc when it was pointed out to me that this was actually a Trig Point.
Too good of an opportunity to pass up.
Not able to get right up against the point without trampling the coastal vegetation but only one metre away.
Enjoyed the walk out to the end of the breakwater and learned a few things about the local area today.
Very relaxing. Thank you.

Nice simple drive by trig. Slightly different shape than we have seen before though.
Grabbed this one to the sound of classical music! An elderly lady and gent were sitting in their car enjoying the view and the beautiful day with the window down and their music turned up.
Glad it didn't take long as classical isn't really our thing.
Thanks.

Out this afternoon collecting moveables to take to the event on Sunday and decided to stop for a look. Easily found.

Second of the two trig points down this way this morning. An easy enough find at 11:45 but the paranoia was running rampant with the parking restrictions near GZ Surprised.

With nasty black clouds and accompanying wall of rain coming across the bay I parked in closest spot to grab a quick photo on my GPS's inbuilt camera (coords in EXIF data for verification if you wish) before driving off again to avoid having to buy a ticket. Wink

Well I was passing by here today and realised that I had not logged this trig point so I turned into the car park to find a whole lot of people eating there lunch in their cars. I jump out, take the photo, and run back to the car. They are ALL staring at me in berwilderment, but I don't care. Muggles or no muggles, it's just a trig point. They probably just thought I was strange, like a train spotter (hehehehe).

Great day for a walk along the coast, started at sandringham and just walked for two hours, collecting caches along the way. The name picnic point reminded me of a place anong the Murray river I once visited. I think this is only my third Trig Point Cache. Nice spot on the coast

Thanks Geocaching Australia

Love it Very Happy the fake rock was so neat that i picked it up to move it out the way but not realizing it was the cache then my brother had to pick out the embarrassing truth. The SHQ kiosk is a great place to eat lunch and hire a kayak. GREAT HIDE 5/5

A lovely evening to be on the bike.

Came here after leaving nearby client this arvo.

Was here a while back with friends with their dogs on the beach near the yacht club.

I always enjoy the drive home around the bay.

I found this easily, and didn't even have to pay for parking, but the 'Trig Marker' worried me. Looking this up when I got home, the Survey marker is actually 3.841m to the south of the 'beacon'. I must have been standing on it!

The most surprising thing for me at this location, is that I hadn't been there before, despite having worked about 300m away for a few years. It was quite some time back however, and certainly the fancy yacht club didn't exist then.

The view from the tp is excellent - a great place to visit. The kids went down to the beach and dipped their toes in the water while I walked to another nearby cache and back.

Terrific location.

Got here for lunch, was still a bit cold despite a good forcast for 24 deg c. Enjoyed the views over the bay before leaving to find some more caches.

Well, what can you say about this TP other than it's a beautiful area to look out from and that it's a complete driveby. I parked within only a few meters of the cache and then stood back so I could get the whole TP in the picture with the GPS.
Great blue skies and blue water today along with the heat in the air and the cool breeze off the water made this a very nice cache experience indeed.

Found by Bob at 1220

I just happened to be heading down to the SE suburbs to visit family today so, when I did a routine check for closest caches and noticed all the new trigpoint ones were now online, I checked out which ones were close and spotted this one near Sandringham Yacht Club which was less than 1km form where I would be traveling today. It turned out to be extremely easy to get to (if the car park is not full, you can park less than 20m from it) and would be rated as 1/1 using the usual rating scheme. It wasn't the sort of marker that I've been used to seeing, but the co-ords were precise and there was no mistaking it. I would have liked to see if there was a "plate" at ground level next to it, but there's a lot of vegetation growing around the base and I didn't want to disturb it.
