Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

The Trig is best accessed off Coalmine Road on the southern side where an overgrown 4wd track passes within 50m of Trig site.

...and I thought the last one was fun to find/get to. Deep in the logging areas I went and eventually arrived close to GZ. 112 metres from the track and there it was...in all it's glory....a huge full on trig. Wasn't expecting that.....

Photo was grabbed and all was good. Then back to the car and back to bigger smoke...before any more smoke filled the air around here.

Fun find and drive. Clan CerberusClan Cerberus

A trig with no view that is easily accessible. The country side in this part of Tassie is lovely we enjoyed the journey and exploring the area.

So interesting that someone decided to put a trig here. It must have been very windswept with very low vegetation when it was placed here...

Intersting place for a trig. I suppose the trees weren't here before though

Came through Myalla on a loop drive passing Meunna, Preolenna, etc and picking up the new cache at the soldier's settlement along the way. Parts of this area are quite beautiful with an ever-changing landscape. It is tucked in quite an out-of-the-way corner though, and adds a few k's onto the tank, so glad of the other cache to make it worthwhile.

I enjoyed the drive up to the trig, it was a gravelly road but pleasant countryside. Parked near the break in the ancient fence and waded into the depths of the plantation. It was very dry, the ground crackling with each step. Found the trig easily despite it being completely hidden in the trees!

Fancy having a trig point in the middle of a plantation. Shows they don't use them now.

Came here from Chinaman's Flats - definitely a long way round for a short cut, on my way to Mum's. Had to stop two or three times to move fallen trees off the road. Luckily they were able to be moved with my bare hands! Enjoyed finding the trig amongst all the trees. Thanks Geocaching Australia - it's a good one!

Our GPS took us to GZ and the trig point but we were surprised that the marker was almost obscured by fast growing plantation trees. We assumed that the trig point as a surveying point is now redundant. Photo posted. TFTC

Had to find this useless trigpoint, so took a little detour on the way to GA1014 (Lets go fishing #6). Nice drive through the village of Preolinna, where I filed away for future use location of the old School and Church. Being by myself, only my hand shows. TFTC

This is quite an unusual Trig as it's totally enclosed within a Eucalypt plantation rendering it totally useless. In the company of an old friend found quite easily as it's only 140m or so off the road. TFTC GCA...Cheers
