Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I had a few days off so I decided to head down to the Snowy Mountains for a bit of a ski tour, unfortunately I couldnt convince any one else to come along so being solo I decided it was the best / safer option to stay close to the fields and roads just in case i came to any grief. fortunately I didnt. Had a great day out and covered quite a few kilo meters on the skiis and managed to avoid all the crazies in the field. It is amazing how many of these trigs i find in the snowies have been beaten so hard by the weather, almost always they are upside down and lying in amongst the rocks. It can make them pretty tricky to find at times.

Found while at perisher skiing.

Over on a ski trip to Perisher from Western Australia. This was the first sunny day so decided to head up to the top of the mountain. I left my friends to complete another run while walking to the peak. The walk up was done with much huffing and puffing, made a little easier by following other tracks. Once at the top I was met with magnificent views all around. However was unable to see Mt Kosciusko as it was in cloud. I took a number of photos for prosperity. All I can say is the trip down was a lot easier than the one up, I sat down on the snow and slid down.

We had stopped past Perisher between Rainbow Lake and Porcupine Rocks for lunch, only to find the place deserted. So it would seem that Perisher is not the same vibrant summer playground that Thredbo is. But we got some intelligence on place that would be open and managed to get a very nice burger. While the wife and child were completing their lunch I dashed up here to grab the trig point. Thinking it would only take 15 minutes I ended up making it up to the top in 19. A 250 metre climb over 850 metres is quite steep after all. I jogged back some of the way, making it an even 33 minutes for the round trip.

Walked up under the Eyre Tbar to the top, steep... The trig is in a bad state, main struts fallen over. Fantastic views though.

27/08/13. 11:15 AM. GCA Cache #4. After taking my video for the nearby GCA at the top of the Mount P double chair ("Ski Bunny"), I grabbed my snowboard and headed up to the trig. Took a selfie and a couple of additional photos (which I will upload to this log when I am back in Sydney). No GPSr in the shots as I only had the iPhone with me, and it was taking the photos. Glad I took the board up here because the best bit was carving up the untracked snow on the way back down to the chair. TFTC }:)

I dashed up to the top of Mt Perisher with my snow board while the kids where taking a ski lesson, and snapped a photo of the trig.

I have taken the liberty of amending this to a 1/5 - it's easy enough to find but does require specialist skills and equipment (i.e. skis or snowboard). Well I guess technically you could get TO this point without knowing how to ski or board, but good luck getting back down Smile

Great views from the trig point, and a lot of fun of course coming back down.

Found with my son whilst skiing at Perisher Blue. The old trig is just above the drop off point for Australia's highest chair lift.

20-Aug-11
Bit of trek up to this one as my brother and I came skiing across from Blue cow. An obvious hide (these trig point cache hiders don't put much effort to hide it do they) so spotted a short distance away. At first we thought the nearby weather station was the trig until we got closer.
Note for future finders it is very difficult to climb down a rock when wearing ski boots.

I scrambled up here while skiing in Perisher for the weekend. Thanks for introducing me to an awesome view.

16-Jul-10
I've often scrambled to the top here after getting off the double chair. Superb views down to the village and out into the back country.
