Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

This trig point is well worth visiting if you have the time for the spectacular views !!

But it is a longish up hill drive no matter which end of the Mount Porepunkah Road you start at.
One starting point is from the intersection of Great Alpine Road and One Mile Creek Road, at S36 41.123 E146 53.831 ( 2km west of Porepunkah).
Another starting point is on the backstreets of Bright at S36 43.482 E146 57.726.
There are other ways to get here as well !!
The road is a reasonably well maintained forestry road.
However the road is narrow and twisty and while suitable for 2WD, I wouldn't be towing a caravan up here !!

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Smittengranny persuaded me to come up here so glad she did. Great views.

Today I managed to persuade TG47 to come up here to photograph this trig. We did it the easy way - we drove, but quite a few people were cycling up. Not my idea of fun. Unfortunately it was very hazy so we weren't afforded clear views but it was obvious that they often are fantastic. TFTT Geocaching Australia. Very HappyVery HappyClan CerberusClan Cerberus

Well this was a surprise, but I guess I should have known there would be a trig point here. WE had been chasing a couple of other caches locally, and ended up here for lunch. What a view.

Drove up here in the heat of the day and it so much cooler than down in the valley with a cool breeze up here. Very Happy
Wow! Fabulous views.!
There was a fellow on 'fire watch' duty in the tower today.
Took a photo of this trig an enjoyed the views before heading back down.
Thanks Geocaching Australia.

I headed for Mt Porepunkah bright and early this morning to catch the views Very Happy
Glorious Shocked
The whole northern face of the Mount Buffalo Massif is visible from here Cool
Of course the early morning light is the best time to view it.

One of the best trig point views anywhere IMHO Razz

Nice easy find, once I found the Mt Porepunkah Rd...The fire spotter was on duty, had a bit of a chat, seemed pleased for some company.

Found this on a day out and about trying to navigate the GeoTriton which was having a day of fuel issues & kept konking out on us. Luckily we had no issues whilst here.

28-Dec-10
Found while on holiday in Bright. Rough track, but still alright for the 2wd.

11-Oct-10
Hmmm... do retrospective finds count? Discovered today that one of our prior 2008 holiday happy snaps had this trigpoint (along with our oversized GPSr - the yellow defender which matches the yellow Garmin inside Very Happy )

It's an amazing spot here. Journey up was uneventful (apart from the odd fallen tree requiring a bit of nudging). Cold up here though!
