Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station and photograph the GZ.

Official Code: TS6600
Official Name: Meerschaum

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property, and permission to access the trig is not forthcoming, or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably.

We went for a relaxing drive this morning, chasing a few trigs and a couple of GA trads as we went.
We stopped and rang the number - we got the OK to go in, he said 'is something going on with this trig, I had the same call last week...', I let him know to probably not expect *too* many calls, as we are part of a small club!
We found our way through to find this great trig, in perfect condition with views all around.... awesome...

So it’s a public holiday for Gold Coast City today and I work 100m past the Logan border haha.. time for a mini road trip. I certainly wasn’t going to waste the day knowing that nearly everywhere around me it was a normal weekday therefore less muggle activity. My first stop was this fine NSW Trig. I arrived at the gate and saw the biosecurity management sign. It made it very clear to not enter unless permission was given and a phone number to call. I tried the number and a nice gentleman answered. I politely asked if I could enter the property to photograph the Trig Station that sits just before the towers. He said yes! I thanked him then made my way through the property to Trig goodness. Intact and with nameplate and with a datum nerd smiling Smile Images taken and I left the property. Just outside the gate I messaged a thank you and said that I appreciated his kindness and sent an image that I’m also posting with this log. While I was driving down the road leaving the property another vehicle was coming up. I pulled over to the side to let them through. As they drove past the lady who was driving stopped and with a big smile said “Great picture”.. I’m guessing the elderly man in the passenger seat was who I spoke to. I smiled back and said thank you. A wonderful start to a great day. Next stop is a Trig I have quietly wanted to visit for a few years. Thanks for the cache Smile

I had made a plan before leaving home to find other caches. I knew that some roads in the area had been closed for awhile. When I checked again I found the roads were completely closed for a week to finalise the roadworks. My alternate plan was to find the Meerschaum TS. I drove up a steep, narrow and well-maintained gravel road. I parked at a gate with the telecommunications towers in sight. The gate had no trespassing and biosecurity signs with the farm managers phone number. Unfortunately the number went to voicemail and I had to abandon my search for the trig. I will try again another day but will ring beforehand to ensure I can access the trig with land owner permission.

I’ve been looking for unlisted trigs lately, and this one popped up – so I went to investigate. The trig is on private property. There is an easement for access to the nearby comms towers, but it does involve driving though the land owners farm, opening a couple of gates.

I asked the landowner if it was OK to grab a quick pic of the Trig – he was OK. Wanted to talk more about the terrible condition of his driveway that he has just paid to get sealed. Any future trig hunters should check with the land owner before setting off to the trig. I think that’s the courteous thing to do, even if you can stand beside it from the easement.

The views from GZ are amazing – 360 degrees from the ocean to the hinterland.
