Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

On a tour of the SE today,
I followed the backroads to this out of the way place Cool
From the carpark
(yes !! there is a carpark),
I strolled the clearly signposted stroll,
past the granite outcrops,
to the top of the hill Very Happy

Trigpoints do tend to be located in nice spots.
And in typical TP fashion,
there is not much of a view as the trees have regrown around it Clapping

An easy, fun TP to chase Smile

In our planning for this trip we were looking for a Dragon Zone GCA cache in the Kingston LGA and this is the only one that we found. We were really surprised that the trig point had been published in September 2009 but had remained unfound. We wondered what the problems might be but the more we read, the less we understood why the cache had remained unfound. So getting to the Jip Jip Rocks Area Trig Point was a high priority for this trip. Today we found a way to get to the entrance to the reserve. We left our car on the main road because the track looked too sandy in place for our front-wheel 2WD. We set off on foot and, even allowing time to look for a GC cache along the way, we walked to the Trig Point and back to the car in about an hour and twenty minutes. It was an easy and pleasant walk with the granite outcrops and different types of gum trees to other areas attracting our attention and interest. At GZ we found the survey marker set into a granite boulder. This was an enjoyable and straightforward walk and made us wonder all the more why it had not been logged in the nearly ten years since publication. Three photos have been added to the Gallery: Mrs y'stassie standing next to the survey marker; a photo of the survey marker with our GPS; and a closer view of the serial number. Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache. Oh, by the way we will claim FTF at 12:15pm.
