Description
This trig greets you as you head north between the hills leading to the Fowlers Gap Arid Area research station run by UNSW. It is clearly a trig in construction and on closer inspection, has a star picket encased in concrete directly below. There is a similar star picket next to the Gap trig on the opposite ridge. Of course, if you are travelling south, you will clearly see this one, and probably miss Gap if you don’t look left over your shoulder.
The station itself is a sheep station that UNSW has been using to research all manner of research into the plants and animals of a true arid region of Australia. See this site for more information https://www.fowlersgap.unsw.edu.au/
I learned that the sheep aspect of the station is being phased out and will become purely a research facility.
There is a trig on the ridge that runs southeast from across the road for the station and has and old trig marker and CORS. Please make sure you check in with the station manager if you want to head up to the Gap trig and CORS.
Advice I was given about this marker is that it is probably and old type of trig that was never updated and put on the Sixmaps. It does not appear on the site. For the purpose of this listing, it will be named “Fowlers Gap” as the on the ridge opposite is officially called “Gap.”
