A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Another visit today. The station is still here. I cleaned away some lantana and long grass (again!).

I was camping in the area last night and noticed a couple of nearby high points. I wondered if there could be Trigs on them.. turns out that answer was yes.

After completing the True Grit 10km event I had to make way to my next camp site. Having many hours to spare I decided to visit the summit of Mount Kooralbyn. The trailhead was only a few minutes away from the event. I read that this Trig was originally installed in 1922 and consisted of a cairn, pole and discs. Let’s check it out. From the starting coordinates the track is clear. I made my way up a gentle slope until I reached the loop at the end. This took about 30 minutes. I was greeted with a centre mass of lantana, lots of it. I eventually found the best way into this Trig but this involved two encounters with 1+m brown snakes. The warmer weather has arrived and so have the snakes. 20m to the Trig from the track. I found the remains of the original cairn and the newer three legged steel Trig station with a centre ground surface pole. The trouble was it was engulfed in lantana and I didn’t bring my machete. Oh well, I had a pair of gloves so spent the next hour clearing the Trig area. An annoying hour but worth the effort in my opinion. Photos taken and time to check out the nice views from up here. I could clearly see one of my next hikes, Wilsons Peak.

A gentle 30 minute walk back to the geo-van completed this adventure. Now to continue with my original plan which was heading up Mount Gipps. I had just lost two hours though with this Trig so time will be an issue and I’ll probably arrive at camp late. Should I leave Mount Gipps for another day? Nope haha! Thanks for the cache.
