Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

Access: Depending what you’re doing on the Island, walk to or park your 4WD at S 027° 11.383' E 153° 22.089' then make your way up The Desert Track to around S 027° 11.381' E 153° 22.142'. From here leave the track and walk up the hill to GZ. Only light bush bashing, nothing difficult. It is steep though. Only a short trek but it is off-track so hiking gear recommended. Give yourself an hour.

This was a pleasant surprise!

After unsuccessful visits to several old Trig locations on this island, I had time for one more off-track hike. My off track adventuring here has been interesting. Even though most of the locations there was nothing found, I did I find some remains of an old Trig station nearby and a recovery point for another old Trig and previous to that a bullet sitting on top of a dune where another old Trig station used to sit but nothing now remains. The casing was just sitting there like it was placed at that location minutes before I showed up. I doubt anyone had stood there in many decades. After cleaning up the casing I could read what was on it.. 1942 MG VII. It’s a 303 cartridge, functional type: Ball. Made in 1942, Small Arms Ammunition Factory (SAAF), No 2 Footscray, Victoria. It was very windy and I can imaging this casing being on top of and under the sand thousands of times since WWII. A great find! But, not as good as this Trig Smile

I left the Geo-van at the parking coordinates and wandered up the track then off track up the hill. Not a big hike but steep. A grand site awaited me.. a very good condition Trig station with two sets of disks. So far this is the best unlisted station I’ve discovered in Queensland. Also, I’ve never seen a dual disk setup before. I have lots of unlisted trig locations yet to explore so I hope to find more. Thanks for the cache Very Happy
