Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Access: Park at the NSW / QLD border, Lions Road / Running Creek Road, S 028° 19.916' E 152° 58.374'. Follow the border fence East on the NSW side until the lantana becomes too annoying then hop over the fence to QLD and keep going up until you reach a plateau at another Trig location (TP12968), S28° 20.191' E152° 59.339'. From this point get back over the fence into NSW and continue East about 50m or until you see an entrance into the rainforest you’re comfortable with. (Do NOT go past about 500m from the plateau along the border fence. This will take you too far and the terrain in will become unnecessarily difficult.) There is NO track to GZ. From the border fence to GZ and back to the border fence is about 2.5-3km with little elevation change. Off track navigation and topographic map skills essential. Head towards GZ on a path of least resistance while consciously not dropping in elevation too much to the West. No significant bush bashing required. There are some unpleasant plants to watch out for but nothing you can’t easily manoeuvre around. Return same route.

The border fence section is very steep but mostly a clear trek. The border fence to GZ and back to the border fence section has gentle elevation changes through rainforest.

Extra notes:
-Trust your GPS, Trig is NOT at the highest point of this location.
-See gallery for rainforest images to see what that section is like and note the triangle on the map image.

About 7km return, allow 5 hours.

I visited Mount Gipps a couple of months ago for the Trig near the border fence. I knew about this one back then but it was late in the day and I was already late for my planned camping location so I placed it on my ridiculously large to-do list. For non-geocaching reasons I was in this area soooooo, let’s do it. A great little 4 hour mini adventure in a stunning rainforest. It really is beautiful up there. Miraculously I didn’t get any leeches or ticks which was a pleasant surprise. The lantana is only on the edges of that section of forest. Once inside you soon forget about it. A part of the four hours was spent exploring the triangle inside the map image (in the galley) to find a possible ‘best’ route to GZ. Everything inside the triangle is much the same. The easiest route to this Trig is to keep inside the triangle. The eastern side of the triangle is the flattest route.

Full log to follow.. might take a while. I have GCA, GC and Waymarking logs from as far back as July to catch up on..

Thanks for the cache Smile
