Description
A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.
Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.
These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.
To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself.
Logs
This one was a little different. I saw it on an episode of Pat Callinan’s 4x4 Adventures this afternoon. He talked about The Pinnacles (there are a few of them out there) and then a pub at Dargo. Not sure when the episode was filmed, but I located the spot.
I could not see it on the GA map or as archived. Google Earth helped with pics of the trig that matched what I saw on the TV, (and I’ve included both here), so this suggests that it is a known spot for a good view.
Maps tell me that this can be accessed via Dargo Rd, Trail Track and Pinnacles Road, a 5-hour return trip from Bairnsdale, or a 3+ hour return trip from Dargo River Inn.
A nearby GC cache (Sweet Pinnacles of Fire GCTWT8) gave me some info in terms of potential terrain rating, so I went with that. The coordinates are from Google Maps and will probably need to be updated by the first to visit with GPS.
