This is a TrigPoint Cache. There are no physical geocache containers with logbooks or swap items relating to this cache here. QTS 424 / TS 6011

Installed in 1974 by Queensland Department of Mapping and Surveying, this trig is a ground level permanent survey mark set in concrete. Originally it had the usual reference marks that included a blaze on a nearby beech tree. It's links included trigs on Mount Barney and Mount Hobwee.

QLD listing: QTS 424
NSW listing: TS 6011

The listed coordinates are on the border of Queensland and New South Wales in Lamington National Park and in the Mount Bithongabel Bush Campsite which sits high on the edge of the Tweed Caldera at 1171m. Trees obscure views here but there are nearby lookout points long the Border Track that run along the rim of this caldera. On a clear day the views from these lookout points are breathtaking. If you have the time, I suggest Echo Point Lookout (this will be a 20+km day though). This National Park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, famed for its ongoing geological processes, evolutionary history, and diversity (especially of rare, threatened and endemic species).

30-Jul-23
Out and about today with a work buddy who is just getting himself into hiking and outdoor adventuring. There's a possibility after today there could be another geocaching family joining the club! We arrived at the Green Mountains day-use area and grabbed a coffee from the cafe, sat down and I explained the route we were taking and what to expect. Soon after this we were on the Border Track. We were on our way to the QLD / NSW border and he noticed an old sign just off the track, "<- WATER 20m".. I've been on this track dozens of times and have never noticed it. He's got good eyes! He was to find more cool items on today's journey! It was glorious walking weather, Queensland winters are divine. Adding to this was the stunning rainforest. A couple of pleasant hours passed and we found ourselves on the border and then the Mount Bithongabel Bush Campsite. It didn't take long to uncover the survey mark. I couldn't find any trace of the reference marks but could see where the old blaze used to be. Nature always wins. Photos taken and we were off to visit the nearby lookouts. I wanted to show him views inside the caldera to Mount Warning. We visited Bithongable Lookout and Toolona Lookout. The views here were great on this clear day but not what I wanted him to see so we ventured south to Cominan and Echo Point Lookouts.. there we go, NICE! The caldera with Mount Warning and beyond! I've been to some of these lookout when it wasn't clear and all I saw was white haha, today was very different. We had a good break at Echo Point then proceeded a couple of hundred metres further to the bush camp. On the way I explained a bit more about geocaching and how multi-caching works. The relevant sign was found and then some numbers inputted for the Echo Point GC cache. We returned the same way we came in. It was getting too late in the day to complete the Albert River Circuit. That will be a future walk. It was getting noticeably cooler but not uncomfortable. On the way back my eagle-eyed friend found another gem.. a mile marker, nice find buddy!! It was a very old post beside the track with writing on two sides. OR 8 with an arrow and OR 5 with an arrow signifying O'Reillys is 8 miles one way and 5 miles the other. Continuing back it was pleasant terrain and dry. No leeches at all today. I told my buddy the story of when I had to scrape a leech out of someone's eye the last time I was in here while it was raining haha. It's a different world inside here when it's wet. We walked just over 20km in just over 5.5 hours with a 300m gentle elevation. A great day out.
