One Tree Hill
Installed 1977
Mark number 50674
Standard Permanent Survey Mark set in concrete with concrete collar and stone annulus. A galvanised iron pole witness post sits close by.
The installation is 1.5m away from NSW trig station, Legume (TS 6609). This installation is referenced in the Legume survey notes but it has a separate mark number and dedicated trig card. There are many trig stations along the QLD / NSW border that are shared by both states but for an unknown reason there are two separate ones here, installed three years apart.
If you look at enough Australian maps you will notice many One Tree Hills. In the early days of surveying, mountain tops were cleared of their timber. This was so that angles could be read between trig stations that sat on these tops. Sometimes in the very early days, solitary trees were used to sight on from other trig stations. Many of these summits were called One Tree Hill. Because of this fact I believe this hill top was used in a trigonometrical survey many years before the modern installations that currently sit there.
The location of this old sketch was never called One Tree Hill but it illustrates the use of 'one tree'. James Burnett's drawing of the trig station on Mount Mitchell, summit cleared of all but one tree. This is from the surveyor's field notes of 4 March 1848. (Department of Natural Resources and Water). Later in the 1920s, a station was constructed to provide greater surveying accuracy.
-----
Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.
These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.
You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Access: There are multiple options to get to this one. One example is to park at S28° 24.558' E152° 16.387' where you will find a gate and track leaving Mount Lindesay Road. This track is a gazetted road called Carters Road. There is no use driving down it as the bridge over the creek several hundred metres in has collapsed. Also, the owner of the neighboring land has had trouble lately and is a little paranoid so best to park your vcehicle outside the gate. I suggest daylight visits only and ensure the gate is closed. Follow the track (road) to the border fence then turn right and follow the fence to the listed coordinates which is the highest point in the area. From the creek onwards it is a gentle increase in elevation. Stay on the NSW side of the fence. There are two trig points at this location. One belongs to NSW and the other belongs to QLD. They are both on the NSW side of the fence. See TP13634 Legume. About 6km return, allow 2 hours.
