Mount Allan Fire Tower
This fire tower trig point is on the summit of Mount Allan in the Conondale National Park.
In the early 20th century a small group of forestry workers were commissioned to survey timber-getting opportunities in the huge forests of Queensland. The workers were responsible for locating and reporting nearby fires to protect valuable timber land. Fire observation at this time was limited - workers relied upon natural vantage points to locate fires.
From the 1930s fire tower networks were constructed across Queensland. Often, two towers would take bearings on the same fire - through cross-referencing, the exact location of the fire could be established. Known as TRIANGULATION, this process is still used today.
The 9.6m Mount Allan fire tower was built in 1954 and is the second oldest is SE Queensland. It is an example of fire tower evolution, featuring design elements of the 1930s, 1950s and 1990s. The tower was restored in 2008 - large concrete footing and steel bracing was added to ensure the structure's longevity.
