Description
Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.
A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.
Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.
These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.
Logs
Well, this was an adventure. I pulled up at the property gate to get a look at the hill, and my car went down into the culvert. As I was trying to get out, a car pulled up behind me. It was the land owner, and he was calling out to me not to go forward. I got out to have a look and decided to reverse using the diff lock. This worked. Ater looking at thedamage to the culvert, I apologise to the land owner and let him know why i was at his gate. He was surprised to find that there are people out there that are interested in looking at trigs, but told me that there are only remnants up there. We got to talking about the farms in the Yass area and the troubles he has had with companies wanting to come through his land with freeways and cabling. After a good 20 minute chat, he offered to take me up to the trig for a look. He said that a surveyor had checked on it about ten years ago...I left my metal detector in the car, so did not locate the pin. Definitely one of my fave experiences finding a trig...and my car was not damaged, but the timber that Bernie had put in place did not fair too well. I am never happy to see cachers publish a trig, claim the find, then archive it because it is on private property (it used to happen a lot) but I don't think Bernie would be too keen to have more visitors, even though he likes a good chat...
