Description

Bald TS692

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Bald.

Serial number is: TS692.

Last inspected on: September 27, 1985.

Elevation is: 1180 meters.

This trig has a impressive base just begging to be climbed. There are great views over the entire area including of the nearby mine.

As of 11/01/2010 there is also a short multicace GC150Y9 The Bald One  based at this trig.

If you have a 4WD you can drive all the way up here.  Depending on track conditions 2wd cars might be able to drive a bit and just walk up the hill.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Out and about with the lads today. I've had this on my radar for ages, but was surprised when we arrived here. One of the best.

MrT was out with rogerw3 doing cache checks. So since they were near this trig MrT had his photo taken there. A spectacular trig! TFTT

Yesterday was very hot down in the basin so after an afternoon thunderstorm I figured this was the day to go caching before it heated up again – the track up was interesting – on the way up I came to the water hole thinking it wouldn’t be much, was ShockedShocked shocked as I was driving through it how deep it was, on the way down I could see the track around it DohDoh – I played it safe & took that option - once up the top the view was very misty. Completed the multi cache also & 2 off waymarks so 4 for the $ of 1 visit. As I was leaving it was lifting & could see the mine – many thanks again Clan Griffin

Found after a bushwalk out near Bungleboori Creek. My car (Subaru XV) made it to within 100m of the trig. This is one impressive structure - I have never seen a trig like it.

29-Dec-17
I didn't get that close with the Duallis, but it was a nice walk with ambient light coming from the mines.
Found at 2348, Friday, 29 December, 2017 - LATE Logging: 1/2/2019
A truly impressive Trigonometric Station.

09-Apr-17
Camped the night out here, with some friends on a boys weekend doing a bit of 4x4ing and stuff, took a wander uphill for a trig find and a bit of a fly around with a drone. Nice solid trig!

17-Jul-15
The 'Wedding Cake' with an icing of snow on 17 July 2015. Got the tape measure out and each "layer" was 500mm high, there were 6 layers, plus the square steel bit at the top of about 1m bringing the total height to around 4m. It was about 2.7 – 2.8m in diameter. Great views of the Wollangambe, shame about the ugly coal waste heaps at Clarence Colliery and the scars of the Sand Mine.

08-Dec-12
Easy park and grab en route to barcoo swamp.

12-Aug-12
After the successful FYAOAL Event, Purplepeopleater and I stopped for a Multi and a bonus Trig, or maybe the other way around. Either way, this is one MIGHT Trig with great views. LOVE IT. Well worth stopping. TFTT Clapping

12-Aug-12
Found on the way home from FYAOAL with AlfyBoy.
What a fabulous trig point and view!!

11-Aug-12
On our way to the FYAOAL event with Tronador we popped up here. Cool and windy day but great views from up here (just don't look at the coal mine).

11-Aug-12
Spectacular views from up here. Climbed to the top with lady Altaire in blustery conditions. A great day out before the FYAOAL event.

25-Feb-12
Found this during a long day of caching on the Newnes Plateau

16-Nov-11
Found on a day out with the 4WDs, Canary, Roger Toriaz and pjmpjm. I too climbed to the top of this thing with Toriaz and nearly achieved a state suggested by the Trig name - or more accurately 'scalped'. I forgot about the vanes and whacked my head of one of them. That hurt! Anyway, an interesting trig to find. Thanks

06-Nov-11
Came down for this trip & the GC multi with Canary & bikerbuddy, while pjmpjm & Rogerw3 made a quick pit stop. Great trig, I think it should be compulsory for anyone logging this one to climb up the pedestal Very Happy

23-Apr-11
Found together with rogerw3 on our Saturday trig-and-cache extravaganza through the Lithgow area!

rogerw3 promised me a special trig, not to be found elsewhere, and this one didn't disappoint -- on the very top of a 'wedding cake' pedestal that has to be seen to be believed!

Of course, I had to climb right up to the vanes so that I could see the name plaque -- affixed up high and on top of the pedestal instead of in the usual side position. Great view of the surrounding area, despite the oncoming rain . . .

rogerw3 explained that the 'holes' underneath the support base allow a view of the 'locating pin' which is the real centre of the trig. However, you need a torch to see this and we'd left ours in the vehicle, which couldn't quite navigate the final 200 metres to the highest point of the hill.

Very satisfying!

'Three Thumbs Up' for the 'wedding cake' base and views . . .

26-Oct-10
Finally made it, I have had this one on the radar for a long time and I got around to doing the lovely walk from Lithgow. The view from the top is quite breathtaking, and this Trig is just begging to be climbed!

Nice view from up here. And it also important for information to find a nearby multi!?!

11-Jan-10
On a 4WD trip in the area, Cheeeeese2001 showed us the way up here. Great views and the braver ones had to climb it.
