Description

Blackheath TS10937

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Blackheath.

Serial number is: TS10937.

Last Inspected on: No Data.

Elevation is: 1086 metres.

Reservoir Trig, steel pillar with mast and vanes.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Whilst the car was being serviced in Penrith I used the opportunity to take a train ride up the mountains to Blackheath where I had 4 and a half hours to walk around before making the train trip back down the mountains. One of three trig points visited, also came across a survey marker (SSM) and a survey marker footsteps in time.

SIX designates TS10937 as "Sentinal" but links historic surveys of "Blackheath GS", across the road, to it. The survey cites a broad arrow on the reservoir, which we found and photographed. Trig is a "rooftop pillar" with beacon mounted directly to the instrument plate.

#GA2388 - 18:00; Day three of the summer sojourn in the Blue Mountains with the geohoney and today we decided to do Scenic World and see a bit more of the local environs. The day started with breakfast in Leura then off to Scenic World and a trip down the Scenic Railway and the walk through the rainforest. The highlight of the day was seeing not one, but two lyrebirds in their native habitat. Managed some great (and some not so great) snaps of these beautiful birds in the wild Dancing Travelled back up in the cable car and after a bite to eat headed across on the Scenic Skyway and back again after a short walk on what had become quite a hot day. After enjoying the sights, we were took the long way home and after dropping the geohoney at the resort, I headed off for a spot of late afternoon caching. I collected a few trads, but the main focus of this mission was trigs, including this one. Another bonus two for one at this location Dancing TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

I confused myself by noting prior to my leaving that this was in Medlow Bath. Got there in the end.

26-Apr-10
This was the end part of a run while in Oberon with HomeDG and SherpaNT for the Oberon event and a caching blitz in the region.
There are a lot of "drive by" trigs in the Katoomba area so we challenged ourselves with how many we could spot.

Q: why are there different coloured trig heads (white, black and even red?)

17-Mar-10
Nice quick find on the way home from work.

15-Mar-10
Found this one today while walking around Blackheath. Interestingly while the Geoscience Australia name is "Shipley Area" The current (2001) topo 1:25000 map shows the name as "Sentinal" and a previous edition (1980) of the same map as "Blackheath".
Take your pick!
The trig point is on top of a reservoir but is visible from the street.
