Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

Lake George South Base TS778 - The eastern side of Lake George (north east of Canberra) is home to an important trigonometrical baseline that acts as a reference point from which all surveys in NSW originate. Yes, the whole state. The baseline, completed in 1874 and the last of four to be positioned at or near the lake, is marked by a tall stone pillar at the northern end and a smaller cairn in the south, the two landmarks are almost 9 kilometres apart in a direct line. Unfortunately Lake George North Base is on Private Property and has been Archived

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Sophoutloud and I are on an adventure to Canberra via Goulburn. This was an important stop for us as after doing a little research about Trig stations in Australia and looking for the first ones we found that this is the southern end of the original base line for NSW built in 1874 so from this point all trigs and surveying for the whole state was achieved, pretty cool I think. Unfortunately the North Base is very much in private property and even though we tried weren't able to get any closer than about 4km, maybe you would be able to see it from the lake side but alas we had to be happy with just getting the south end. Its a shame that something so significant in Australia's mapping system is just sitting out in a paddock getting walked on by cows. Clan Minotaur

After our introduction into trigs, and doing a bit of research into them it was inevatable that we would end up here. We just had to, being one of the first base lines I t the state!! Crazy to think that so much history is just sitting in a random paddock!! Love the find so cool!!

Felt a bit weird going past a (faded) private property sign...but there was no one around for the shot to be taken.

What an interesting TP. I was out with Joolay and Kittykatch today on a mainly GC run but Kittykatch knew about this different TP and so Joolay navigated us to the GZ. Love it.

Found with Smittengranny and Kittykatch put and about. Never seen one like this before

Found 5:20pm with girlfriend. When I hit the track I drove along and took it nice and slow on the dirt Road to not annoy the local property owners. Respecting them maintains the peace with visiting the trig. Finally got to the trig and it’s great to see an older style one rather than the usual metal pole setup. We took the obligatory pictures and then I turned the geovehicle around, a bit tricky right at that location so I had to move forward a bit first. Then we headed back out again as respectfully as on the way in. Reading the earlier log I thought I'd mention we also passed by the large bull under the tree and it took no interest in us as we passed.
*Overall Experience: 3*

GCA 1879. Found with minniek for our daily GCA.

This looked like a cute and different Trig so off we went for a short-ish drive and quick find at GZ.

Travelled a bit further afield for a trig today. Almost 2 hours round trip with fitzy_1965. We figured that it must be a public road with the 4 letterboxes at the beginning.

Past a huge bull resting under a tree on the way in. Glad he wasn’t standing because he probably would have been close to as big as the car....ok, maybe not, but he was huge!!

Quick snap of trig, which is certainly strange, then back home again.

#GA1033 - 14:00; I was out on a caching run with Sol de lune cleaning up our unlogged caches around Bungendore. This one was on the list, so a quick trip up the dirt track soon had us at GZ where the happy snap was taken of an unusual type of trig. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

I drove down this road and hesitated at the private road sign Confused, but then figured others must have visited the trig, so continued. An unusual looking one Shocked. I haven't seen another like it. Worth coming to see. Very flat land for a trig. Very Happy

A small detour on the way to the coast. Yep, a very interesting trig in a very interesting place.

18-Feb-15
Yep, certainly a strange looking trig. Private road wasn't a problem even when a resident went past...they just waved.

23-Jan-15
Found today with GrimRaider on the way down the coast for Australia Day 2015. The 'No Trespassing' sign put us off at first, but we figured everyone else must have used this road. Easy grab - TFTT Smile

strangest trig point ever!

Found on a caching day in the country. A very nice little spot to visit. Never would've visited otherwise. Thanks GCA!

Having read the logs knew what to expect, but still a weird looking Trig Shocked

Wow, have never seen a trig like this before - really cool. Took photo of Andy at Trig and we were swapping places when Andy spotted a huge brown wriggle stick - calmly called out SNAKE and backed away towards the road. Needless to say I bolted out of there real quick so never got my photo taken. Andy reckons body was as thick as his wrist and at least 2m long. Luckily for us it was cold morning and the thing was still sluggish. TFTT and the bonus heart start, lol Smile

05-Dec-10
Detoured out to this trig on our way home from Bungendore today and this is not what I was expecting, I have never seen a trig like this one before. Very interesting find.

04-Oct-10
Not much walking to get to this one. It looks like this trip is well cared for by the neighbors. Albida

04-Oct-10
First today and this one had us going off the main road into which looked like a public access road to some farms. Got to gz and wow

23-May-10
Well, these trigs are sure getting stranger! However, a nice easy find, unlike the other two in this area, which I could not access!

21-Mar-10
A nice quick find on the way home from the coast.

The cache easily located and was quite interesting - not at all what I expected.
