Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

A big two days out in Ballarat aiming to complete the geotour actually began up this mountain to grab a 2001 cache.
Navigating through all of the potholes to the top, I noticed this structure and immediately knew I'd be taking a picture with it.
Sure enough, another trig point is added to the tally!
Thanks for listing it, Geocaching Australia! Very Happy

Ballarat Geo-Tour Trip

Day #2 of 4 (16/9)
Today’s main focus is finding the Geo-tour caches and any pre-2010 cache I came across along my travels. I also found a few AL’s and a couple of others nearby to make up the numbers. I ended up with finding 20 out of 25 of the Geo-tour caches. I ended up with 50 finds for the whole day. My D/T average took a hit today but that’s okay because I’m here for the tour and to fill my Project GC grids. It was a great day out and I really enjoyed finding all the caches I found. TB visit on all found caches. I would like to thank all CO’s of the caches I found today and for allowing them to bring the Geocaching community enjoyment. Big Grin TFTC’s Big Grin

It's always great to find a Trig-point especially when you weren't expecting it. I was up here for the GC caches and so I'll happily take this find too. Big Grin

Nice drive up. There were workers all over the place, but they were not concerned with me.

14-Apr-23
Headed out of Ballarat for Melbourne, a couple of trigs to go! This was a fun bumpy drive up the mountain, then a 2001 oldie cache to boot!

Ballarat and Rutherglen Christmas 2022 Trip. Day 2. After a long day driving yesterday today we were all keen to get on and do as many of the Ballarat Geo Tour caches as possible. The group that joined up for the days journey was Sol de Lune, Fitzy_1965, Smitten Granny, Kitty Katch, Joolay and albida33. We signed each log as BCI22 for Ballarat Christmas Invasion and we enjoyed the challenge of the days caching. There were some very interesting location to visit, some were over run with holiday makers, most areas we were alone to enjoy the location. We managed to locate a foe other caches as we went. The day ended with an event where we were able to meet up with locals and fellow travelers alike.

As we visited a nearby cache we had to walk past this old trig hiding in the trees.

Thanks
Albida

Seriously, I have lost count of how many times we have visited this Trig. Also lost track of previous photos.
Ah well. All sorted today.
Lots of long grass at TP1923.
Great views and we also logged the nearby GC cache.
Visited with +Wife and our GeoMutts, EveTheStaffy and MaxTheCollie.

29-Feb-20
Chasing one of the very old GC caches brought us to the top of Mount Warrenheip where we not only found this cache, but this trig point, a magnificent view, and an overhead view of Kryal Castle.
It’s wonderful what the added bonuses of geocaching bring you to.

GCA Find #231

A cracking location. always enjoy a Trig. DancingClan Phoenix

Thanks Geocaching Australia

Trawling the map and realised that I'd visited this Trig Point when I was chasing old caches on the way back from the aftermath of the untimely demise of the Geo Tradie's Van. Ah, there's the photo: September 2013? My, how time flies.

Going back through my old photos and I realised I forgot to log this one !! We had an enjoyable drive up here and the views were great from the top. Being a bit chilly, we had the place to ourselves. Thanks for showing this hidden gem. Clapping

Drove up the spiral road; was cool up top, exhaled condensation.
Could not photograph brass plate as square box was full of water.
Did not expect to see a castle out here, LOL.

24-Jul-16
Visited this trig point on a very icy cold and misty winters evening, on the way home from a weekend at Colac and Lara. Also found the GC trad here too.

03-Jul-16
Up here for a GC jasmer filler, I saw the familiar trig beacon, and just knew there had to be a cache on GCA, after a DNF on the GC cache, it is a relief to get a smilie here, not a wasted journey Smile

07-May-16
Found on the last day of our mainland holiday, making our way back to Melbourne to catch the boat home. An easy drive by trig, gotta love 'em! TFTC

15-Feb-16
What a way to start a massive day of caching in Ballarat. We were up the hill to collect the old GC cache that is nearby and as we drive around the last bend, we both exclaimed: A Trig Point!! So we took the required photos too

13-Feb-16
Captured the image (and found the trig point) while grabbing a nearby cache.

It doesn't get easier than this one.

13-Nov-15
Pprime, Fangsoki and I had flown down from Brisbane for a weekend of caching and we had picked out a list of "special" caches which interested us.

An interesting criss cross of roads on the way up the hill and we found a park beside a deserted vehicle.

After meeting KTCvic at the nearby GC cache we returned to the cars and Fangsoki took the attached photo of me at the trig point.

26-Jul-15
Visited today in the rain, sleet and hail.

Came up here to see what the fires had done to this mount As we were hoome when chopper and fire trucks went past in January. Nice to see regrowth coming back and a wallaby or two . We have taken a picture as well

21-May-13
On our way from Melbourne to Adelaide we took a detour to Mount Warrenheip to look for a cache published in 2001 and for this trig point. The trig point was found quite easily - the required photo has been added to the Gallery. We were quite surprised by the views from Mount Warrenheip - certainly a great vantage point for getting an appreciation of the surrounding area. TFTC

10-Feb-13
As Tyred and Cranky were riding their Pushbikes in another event I decided to do some caching around the Ballarat areas and stumbled across this one. I did not have it in my GPS to be found but I know to always take a happy snap when I see a TP.

21-Jan-13
Found on another Demolition Crew caching run to the Ballarat area, with Quasar3671, TrailRunning and Rebel Acts. Pic to be uploaded. TFTC.

03-Nov-12
We dropped by here at 13:30 while on the way up to the Grampians for a weekend of bushwalking. Last time I was here for its GC neighbour, I had to walk most of the way thanks to a fallen tree across the road down the hill a bit. At least it was a drive-by today Very Happy.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

06-May-12
Walked strait passed this one to get to the nearby GC cache, so we figured it a find Shocked

Found by Team Ladava around 6.30 pm while heading home to Sunbury via Ballarat after baby sitting the grandkids for the night in Geelong.
A great location with panoramic views when you manage a vantage point beyond the trees and of course the access passes a pioneering and iconic tourist development.
Unfortunately I have less than enjoyable memories of our visit about thirty years ago as it was too soon after the death of my father and some of the grim displays played with my mind.
Our thanks to Geocaching Australia and especially caughtatwork for pulling the series together for the cache and bringing us to this location.
Love this trig point series
Cheers

Lovely drive to this cache, a few wallabies on the road.
As noted previously, no view for this location.

10-Oct-10
Was up here to do a GC.com cache and knew the trigpoint would have to be on GC.com.au, of course it was and it was a great day to be up there Smile

28-Aug-10
There are not too many TP's that can be accessed all the way by 2WD car. Many great views up here.

24-Jul-10
An easy find today, while hit in the area with a mate and kids. Saw a hunchback on the way up, chasing the public in the carpark at the castle on the drive up, quite entertaining.

Cheers gordo

Found 9.00am
Nice drive up to the top and with a number of nearby caches it made for a worthwhile stop.

26-Jan-10
Nice and easy find for a lazy Australia Day afternoon of caching. Great spot but not too many views... shame about that. Anyways worth the trip up here to look around.

17-Jan-10
We have been here a few years ago for the GC cache up here but were passing by on the highway and thought we would visit the trig today.
A nice spot.

12-Dec-09
I went to this location today as I wanted to rescue an MCR that hadn't moved since it was placed nearby 10 days ago.
Great for me as I get to log 3 finds in this area! Yipee!
This is the first trig point I've seen!
Hopefully I can work out how to attach a picture to this log.

Found by caughtatwork at 12:23
W00t! *FTF* on this TrigPoint.
A very nice drive up the mountain and at the top we parked and spotted the TP only a few meters away from the carpark.
An easy drive by if there ever was one.
Alas, no view as the trees are quick thick and tall up here, but it's a nice location to visit, especially in spring when the low ground flowers are out and about.
*Overall Experience: 4*
