Description

Hay TS2445

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Hay.

Serial number is: TS2445.

Last Inspected on: August 21, 1979.

Elevation is: 944 metres.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Found this one a little while ago with Sophoutloud on a wet, wild and windy day out exploring Mt Hay, a nice little walk up the hill (although very overgrown after fires and lots of rain) to grab this traditional old rock pile trig. I have been out here many times since, it is a great place for bush walks canyons and general exploring.

MrT did a walk to Mt.Hay with a group of friends. He took a photo of the trig cairn but also spotted a survey marker nearby. The day was overcast but no rain which made their walk pleasant. TFTT

Just came back from an overnight trip out beyond Mt Hay so 'found' this trig on the way out and the way back. First time walking in this area and I'm sure it won't be the last - amazing views on the way out to Mt Hay and again on the section to Venus Tor and Boorong Crags.

It seems a long time ago that I came along to do the Butterbox canyon, but we didn't get up to this trig point at that time.
We were dressed for the chilly wind, so it was a nice walk out before sunrise to find this cairn that is looking a bit worse 'for wear'.

13-Jul-14
The plan was to walk out to Hay trig Saturday night (as I have previously found this one back in the 80's), BUT, on arriving at the car park the wind was blowing so much (and COLD), that we decided to sleep over in the car. Not a chance of pitching the tent as planned - don't think we could have gotten one peg in.
I think the last time I was in the area it was to do the Butterbox Canyon, Probably back in 2005.
So found and photographed the trig at 0720, then went on to find "Hay, Hay its…"
It seems that the rock cairn has been affected by branches falling on it, (and possibly by people) and I would love to see it get back to something like its original condition sometime.

I completed this 1 as well as the GC Hay, Hay Its ............. cache. This was a very windy day today, it looks like a tree has landed on the rocks, which must have happened yesterday or this morning. A very interesting walk & a very cold day well the chill factor at least.

One for the true believers. I think I qualify by now. A pile of rocks left behind 130+ years ago. Although looking at my photos it seems to have been depliled a bit since it was visited by previous geocachers.

I liked how the vegetation changed on the walk depending on the elevation and the exposure.

I also heard and partly witnessed a lyrebird doing the full-on imitation of other birds including a brilliant kookaburra imitation, a magpie and a lorikeet.

The visibility was poor - very misty. I will come back another day for the views.

Found at 1:04 pm.

I took the offer made by whitemushroom to drive the Mt Hay Road. I had the cache nearby in my to do list for ages. Was a great day with a great walk and the views, what can I say. The trig was a bonus. TFTT.

After a plethora of Trigs found and logged, a hand-built rock cairn trig was despairingly missing from whitemushroom's finds. On an early spring blue-sky day an offer was made to bisygisy to drive the Mt Hay Road. Little did we realise that at the carpark a short trek was simply not to be, but what was to be was ... simply stunning. It is an amazing structure when the location is taken aboard, and the (rock size) effort that had to go in the construction. Much appreciated the on-the-ground navigation by bisygisy that gave the joy of 'discovering' this Trig.

Enjoyed visiting this old trig a second time, with rogerw3.

It has been a long time coming, but today was the day, pjmpjm kindly offered to drive to the car park and come along as well.
A very nice easy walk along the old trail, getting quite hot but the cool wind made things a bit easier.
We got to the trig without troubles and found the cairn as expected, in very good condition considering, we even found a couple rusted bits of the original vanes.
Great views along the track on the way, well worth the walk.

found on the way to The Rats nearby cache

While bikerbuddy had his GPS navigating to the Hay Hay cache, I had mine navigating to this nearby trig Very Happy . Turns out we needed to pass right by the trig to get to the cache, so it was easy to stop & take photos.

This one was a good walk to get to, but has spectacular views nearby & is worth the effort to get to.

My first trig logged, although I've done quite a few and never logged them. Might catch up. We were doing the GC cache, "Hay, Hay it's..." and had to pass by this trig on the way, so I took a photo. Thanks

Working out in the National Park today, I turned on the GPSr for a check on possible caches and this one was about 450 from where I was, so I just had to make the 10 minute hike up the hill for a quick and easy photo, before eventually moving on to a lunchbreak.
Great views both here and out at Mount hay further along the road.

Passed by this point while chasing down 'Hay Hay It's' about 150 metres distant. Mrs. pjmpjm snapped this photo. It's the highest point on Mt. Hay.

Really enjoyed this trig point, or what's left of it!

Even on a pea soup kind of day it was amazing to feel like your out here on your own and the bush goes on for ever!

On the way back the boys got to play Coo-ee with some Canyoners!
