Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Access is via the sign posted walking tracks  off Ironcliffe Road Penguin.

Out walking on Mount Mongomery and stopped to grab the required photo. TFTT

I have been keen to do this walk for a while now and waiting for a free weekend to do it was the problem, today i had the opportunity to make the climb, pulled up at the Montgomery car park and set off down the PCT track as after talking to some locals they informed me that the climb from the Montgomery circuit was really steep. After walking along the PCT track i came to the intersection for the trail up the mountain. the climb was steady until the last 500m which was hard, but was rewarded with a bench seat at the top of the mountain, Unfortunately the view was obscured by the fog but was well worth the climb to tick this one off my to do list, Only have 2 more mountains left to climb in the area now. After a hour and a half trudge up hill we were at the top !
There is a new track to the peak, which avoids the "straight up" approach.

An unexpected call from relatives had Mum and I take a trip to the North West Coast on the 11th of May to visit with her brother in the Latrobe Hospital
As a result, I was able to take advantage of the situation and do some caching today
After finding caches around East Devonport this morning before our visit to the hospital today, I came over here and started the trail walk

Weather: 13 degrees Celsius Fine, sunny and blue skies with some cloud

Travel: For the day, I totalled 14.91 kilometres burning 2293 calories which required 19907 steps Needless to say, my legs are not in LOVE with me at the moment but they will learn to forgive me.

TP2246 “Mount Montgomery ST367”
Having already walked from PCT#1 to PCT#7 and back to the track leading to this cache, my legs are tired and slightly sore
Now for the climb - slow and steady; passing three muggle groups along the track
Found the last 100 or so metres very steep and tiring but stubbornness would not let me stop - getting "OLD" has got to stop!!
Once at the top, the effort was well worth it
Another bucket list cache done and dusted
Enjoyed the great views immensely
Sainted at 1450 hours
All good with the trig
TFTC and cheers

Found several times after work and TAFE, this trig was the first one that the CEyres climbed to when we first moved to Tas, well before we knew about geocaching. This photo was taken on a wet day, acually the afternoon was fine when I started and closed in and raining with half an hour, in other words typical spring weather. The last little part of the track is a little bit challenging. Very Happy

Checking through old photos. Was here 14/10/09.

07-Nov-10
Found on the way to do 'Grand Theft Auto' cache on the same mountain...
Not very nice weather - just a sprinkly when I left the car but light persistant rain at the 400m to go mark on the journey up and continued for the rest of the day.
Locals who have been here before will recognise the tower in the background....

MMM! A three terrain rating is a little understated especially the last section but well worth the effort. The track has been changed in a few places due to fallen trees in last years storms but is easy to navigate as it looks like it gets quite a bit of traffic.

16-May-10
The weather was wonderful - clear blue skies and not a hint of wind. Magnificent views eastwards from Mt Montgomery. This made the 3hr return walk along an often quite steep track worthwhile. TFTC

A hot walk up but good good views to be had.

I would appreciate co-ords for a starting point for the walk in I tend to get the wrong place every time.

Can you get FTF's on these Trigpoint caches? First to log anyway. Quick jaunt up here on my way back to Hobart. I'd forgotten how pretty the first part of the walk is along beside the creek. The steep bit up near the top is still oh so steep and slippery. But the views at the top are lovely. About 4 major trees across the track to climb through, and a couple to walk under that are currently resting against other trees (hoping they'd stay put while I walked underneath). Good to have another excuse to visit the area. Checked on nearby cache which is in top condition. Thanks for the excuse to re-visit, Geocaching Austalia!

TrigPoints and standard geocaches are different types of caches and can happily co-exist along side each other.
For those who seek TrigPoints and standard geocaches, they can consider themselves lucky and can claim a "two for one" deal provided they meet the requirements of both cache listings.
