Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

I drove to GZ via Merritts Creek Road. A trail leaving the road then two lefts got me to the prize. Towers with Trig points seem to be a thing in QLD. Thanks for the cache.

Driving in this recently and there signs on the forestry roads restricting entry. I came in from the back through Merritts creek and entry is available to the side road of the tower. You have to come back out the same way at the moment. Thid trip was tyo find a way in to assist any other GCAS cachers to access this one. Clan Minotaur

Out for a days caching. I've driven past this site quite a few times. The tower stands out when the trees have been harvested but blends in and becomes invisible as the years go by. Followed the main track for easy access. I wouldn't do this after a bit of rain. Thanks for the reason to stop.

We've been watching this one for ages, and finally got the chance to go up and have a look. To our delight, the fun police had left the gate unlocked and..... well..... maybe I shouldn't say what we did next, but suffice to say, we were on top of the world as we recorded the co-ords from our gps, to show that we had indeed found this cache. The views are stunning, and well worth the risk of incurring the wrath of the aforementioned fun police. And guess what?... we didn't fall, break anything or die from exposure, but jeez we had a good time. Not saying everyone has to follow in our footsteps, but sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Does anyone remember the Newcastle Song...... never let a chance go by. Cheers, Bindair Dundat and "The Princess". Pic attached.

24km from home.
We took the all terrain Mazda 3 in from the West but took the more travelled track back tot he highway.'As with the other finders of this Trig Point, we got as close as we legally could. The GPS was pointing to the steps of the tower but being inside a locked enclosure with plenty of signs saying Keep Out, we did the right thing.
Took nothing but memories, left nothing but footprints and our tag.

Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia

I know this area well and knew I could get my 2WD very close to the tower without driving past any no entry signs. Parked very close to the tower but you can not access it due to the fence. Likewise it would not be wise to be caught inside this area as it would be tresspassing. TFTC

Travelled past this one on the way up but it was wet so left it to my return. Had to use 4WD at one stage for a steep section but otherwise OK. The trig is under that amazing fire tower which appears to be supported by individual tree trunks. Have claimed it based on the fact that trigs in QLD are often just a steel pole & as I got within 2 metres of it (behind a security fence) feel comfortable with this decision. A sign at the foot of the tower says I shouldn't have been in the forest but no such sign at either entrance. Vandals have cut the fence open but declined to go in & have a look.
