Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

One of many on my list this week. Fairly easy access to this poor, burnt trig.

As we came north this morning we called into and visited the Wallagoot Area Trig Point. This area was obviously impacted by the fires, as the melted plastic top mounted on the trip point testified. Three photos have been added to the Gallery: Mrs y'stassie at the column; the name plate on the column; and the survey marker. Thanks for the cache.

A nice easy one with Relish64. The plaque clearly says "Tathra". Go figure????

Geocaching Australia (GCA) Cache Find Number 1189 - 11983 overall cache finds.

Found while on a caching run with mtrax and LuckyL10n doing the Saphire Surprise Tour (SST) and Brickfield Hill (BFH) series down the coast. While I mainly looked for GC caches, when an easy GCA cache comes along we go for that as well. Trigs are particularly nice to track down and find. I was very happy when they became part of the GCA cache family. Its especially satisfying if you have made a big climb up for one ! I have also now joined dragonZone in Clan Cerberus, so there are more reasons to find those GCA caches. Its interesting to find the many different types of trigs. From the traditional metal legs and vanes, to the concrete base with vanes, to the ones on top of water tanks (especially the red ones !), as well the new CORS type. When you look on a GCA map and see all those hundreds and hundreds of blue 'Z's it shows just how many there are out there. Shame so many are on private property and cannot be accessed at all. So as far as I'm concerned every trig that can be found and photographed is a real bonus !

The trig was quickly 'found'. Piccie taken and posted.

Thanks Geocaching Australia !

#GA944 - 13:05; Dropped by this trig while on a caching tour de force with fitzy_65 and mtrax doing the Sapphire Surprise Tour trail. Didn't realise what an easy drive by it would turn out to be, although the fallen branches on the road close to GZ stopped us getting as close as some of the earlier finders. Not sure how this trig got its name as the nameplate says Tathra. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

Only a short detour to find this one. Took the photo from the edge of the turning circle, looked a bit snakey in there. Can't believe it's been over three years since this one has had a find! TFTC

This was just a short detour to grab the trig.

A dive by for this one. Albida

Second of three trigpoints found on my wanderings today Smile
This one was a quick drive by although after parking the geomobile only 20 metres away from where the coordinates were, I still couldn't see it anywhere Very Happy
It was hidden away in the scrub, unloved and unused for it's intended purpose Sad
Still in remarkably good shape though considering it's location.
Most trigpoints in these easy to access areas have had the tops broken off them by vandals (like the nearby Merimbula Trig).

03-Nov-09
Found by Team Ladava on our Cup Week Capers in Merimbula tour.
Unfortunately very limited views from this Trig Point as they are of course superseded and unused and the regrowth has screened any views.
The location has the obligatory infrastructure and has attracted an amount of rubbish dumped by lowlifes. What can I say?

Located off a dirt track near Tathra. There is a communication tower nearby & took photo during a storm - silly boy as lightning struck closeby. I'm outta here!
