Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A nice drive-by Trig just off the Hume Hwy with great views to the NE.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

A quick find with Black Bunny while we were in the area.

Love a double trig. Better when they come with a GC and a GA cache. Came up in the all wheel drive, but a standard 2wd will get here with little trouble.

Found on the way up the Hume for a week away before the virus lockdowns happen. Shocked
Nice quick stop for another trig and back on the road again. Wink

With a day off and the eagerness to get out for a cache or two, Wink I headed out for a run along the back-roads and Hume-HWY between Yass and Gunning. I chose this route to collect caches that has popped up, to avenge DNF’s and to collect caches I missed last time, I did this run (back in 2016). I found a good mixture of caches both in sizes and types of hides. Most were quick finds and all caches were signed and replaced except for three DNF’s and one NA. Out of 45 attempted caches, which is a mixture of both GC and GCA, I ended up finding 41 of them. I would like to thank all CO’s of the caches I found and for allowing them to bring enjoyment to me and the rest of the caching community. Big Grin TFTC’s and TFTTP’s Big Grin

Whilst in the area late last year we went off the Hume Highway and parked our car in a safe place. Then we took our time to walk up a rather steep track (aka "rough road") to look for a CGA Traditional cache and to visit the two Trig Points, TP2489 Mundoonen and TP6837 Mundoonen Old. It is interesting to see the two trig points so close to each other. We have just found the photos we took at the time. Three photos of TP2489 Mundoonen have been added to the Gallery: the trig point pillar; the identification plate on the trig point pillar; and a view of the immediate area of the trig point. Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.

Took a snap shot here while collecting a GC cache. Thought I had taken a photo of the old trig too but dont seem to have it on the phone... hmm thats a little weird. Agh well. Next time maybe.

20-Aug-17
Headed out for a quick afternoon of caching with fitzy_1965.

Our main aim was to clear out some GCA in the Yass area. Last two for the day for me were these two trigs. Quick snap before heading home.

It is a veritable treasure trove of caches up here - two trigs, one GA traditional and two GC traditionals. WELL worth the visit.

16-Aug-16
Part of the reason to come up here was to log this trig site. I also wanted to log the caches up here. Came up on the road bike - hairy ride coming up, very very slow trip down! Thankfully it was fine sunny winter afternoon, so the track was manageable. Found Mundoonen, unfortunately getting too late to make the trek down steep rough terrain in motorbike boots to nab its close mate, Yarrh Plains. It can wait for another day. Fantastic views of the region was another reason for coming. Was not disappointed.

Thought I'd logged this before (certainly been here many many times). Im sure it used to have vanes many years ago.

A cloudy cold day, but still worth the trip.

#GA556 - 16:20; I decided to head out on a caching run this afternoon into nearby NSW. I picked up a couple of GC trads along the way and after initially taking the wrong turn off, soon found my way on track to this cache and its nearby cousin. The track to the top was interesting in places after recent rains, but I managed to get to the top unscathed. Took a snap of the old trig, then over to this one for more of the same. Great views from up here. Grabbed a selfie while in the area.

There had been a nasty accident on the highway here this morning and trucks were being worked on in the road at the bottom. I went past and up a rough dirt track which turned to asphalt after a while, not often that happens, up to the top where the trig was an easy find. Vanes are gone but there is an interesting black plastic cover in their place. Nearby there's the old cairn remnants with the plug still to be found in the centre.

29-Sep-12
A quick divert off the freeway to find this TP. No MVO sign to be seen so we drove right to GZ.

Stopped at the bottom of the track up as put off by the management vehicles only sign. Pleasant enough walk, a slow steady climb on the road. Found the trig easily enough among the masts. Some good views through the trees. Also found the nearby GC cache.

15-May-12
Was here while doing Yarrh Plains.

12-Apr-12
I came up the hill to find the Yarrh plains cache, and was pleased to discover there was a trig up here as well as we parked the cars. Snapped the pic and then headed back the short walk to the cache. Both are worth the visit, and the views up here are great, although we did not loiter today as the wind was strong and had quite a chill to it.

07-Apr-12
Great views, worth the drive!

Now I've got my new geomobile driving up these tracks is pretty easy and I would have been worried in my last car with the low clearance, but most of the track is paved so may have got up here anyway.
Nice to have visited
thanks

A quick find and a great view on a lovely Saturday morning. I am surprised that this is not logged more often.

28-Aug-10
120. Amazed that this has remained unfound for so long - it's only a short walk in from the road if you're not game to take the car up to it. Quite brisk up here this morning - with top views.

TFTC and the fog veil.

Found with McPhan. My first FTF! Will post photos when back in civilisation.
