Description

Scott TS6285

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Scott.

Serial number is: TS6285.

Last inspected on: December 11, 1978.

Elevation is: 600 meters.

This trig has been vandalised and now consists only of a concrete pedestal and the top plate. Side name plaque and vanes are gone.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

On the 6th January I completed the Scott Tower Kurrajong Heights trig across the road from here & as it was hot & humid I wanted to come back & complete this 1 at a later date, well today was the day. I did the straight-line approach like others & walked across the road from tower, just 110 metres. Well they don’t want any won to complete this trig at all. Hanging in a tree gust before old trig is a Private Property no trespass sign so they have their legal side of covered, so basically, I took the shots & got out of there. The concrete dome is the old trig it has a description on it now, I should have taken a better photo, I think it says 1880. So yep that is scott old & the 1 we are logging is scott new. As the sign is before the trigs, I would say for now on it is the front door approach – nock on the door & ask for permission.
Safe to say there is 2 trigs here, many thanks & sorry to the owners.

Like Sol De Lune, I was also put off by the private property signs and decided against attempting this one.

Found this trig with Team Merlin when out for a caching run to claim a few caches in the area.
With GZ in hand a nice quick find.

Doing a GA cache run with JJCC and being in the area we drove up to the two trigs. After finding Scott Tower we walked across the road and wondered up the track towards this trig. The largish dome at ground level with the plug hole in the top is rather intriguing on approach painted white with four star pickets around...definitely looks to be connected somehow to the trig, but how? and what is its use? On the way out we spotted a old private property sign lying in the track.

Found two entry points...both with big...Private Property, do not enter...signs. One entry point was a driveway, the other a sort of pedestrian walkway. However the signs were enough for me so I retreated to go and find something else.

After Scott Tower I crossed the road and walked up the hill. There's a new looking sign which says "Cherry Tree Farm" - see photo. Found the painted trig and someone has put their own plaque on there with "Scott trig station" engraved on a piece of gold plate. Another odd object nearby - four posts around a point of concrete - see photo. Great views. On the way out I saw the "Private Property" so I guess this is off limits - whoops!

I came across this trig on my way to the nearby GC cache. I knew it was nearby & was intending to look for it, but didn't expect to just walk up to it on my way to the cache.

1100, GAFF1, Fournd by Geoson and I whilst looking for Cherry Tree Park.

Geoson is facinated with Trigs so we stopped by and had a good look, there were now vanes, just the concrete stand, plaque missing.

I found this trig while looking for a nearby cache. I didn't know it was here, but my father, who is a local, pointed it out.

Another close by discovery on an early morning Richmond cache hunt with Alfyboy. A quick walk up the hill through/over the barbed wired gate and we sighted this old pedastal. Great views from up here!!

Found with Purplepeopleater on our morning mystery cache hunt expedition. Walked up from the road and found the damaged remains of the Trig. Pitty Mad Nice view down. What I could see of it.

Found together with pjmpjm and GazMag on a day-long Geocaching and trig hunting expedition in the Kurrajong/North Richmond/Windsor areas.
Not much of a challenge finding this old and very tired Trig, it looks like it has had a hard life, the name plaque has gone but the mounting top plate is still there.

Bellbird Hill Area Trig
Burralow Road
Kurrajong Heights, NSW

For some reason my Tom Tom initially had troubles in finding Burralow Road, but I persevered and am glad I did. I discovered an old dilapidated trig pedestal in an 'abandoned park that time forgot.'

Like so many 1970s era trig placements, this one is now nearly completely surrounded by trees and bushes, so that it would be useless for its original purpose. And there are some really, really big radiata pines that have grown up nearby, towering over the park. But you can still catch glimpses of the amazing views from Kurrajong Heights down to Sydney. They're really spectacular.

I wonder when a decision will be taken to re-establish and refurbish this park. There's a partly eroded driveway that's more or less passable for 2WD vehicles (no problem for AWDs like the GeoBuru) and another driveway that's closed by a gate. However, if the area is ever closed off, it's only about a 150 metre walk from the road.

Well worth the attempt and a pleasure to see this one, the big pines and the view down to the 'flatlands.'

An extra 'Thumbs Up' for the trees and views . . .

Photo coming within the next hour or two . . .

I know this area very well. This poor Trig looks unloved and like many others has been vandalized. However, a great location!!
